Gruden to Tennessee

I will. But its completely irrelevant now since UT has a coach and his name isn't Gruden, or anyone spectacular for that matter.

Is this one of the longest threads on ST completely irrelevant to GT football (Other than that UT plays UGA)?

Do you realize that you make the Grudemonium video on YouTube even funnier?

i think Tennessee got a pretty good coach. time will tell

Again I'm not the only one who thought him coming was a possibility. Travis actually gives a very good analysis of the whole travesty of the search that wasn't.

"First, Hart refused to go all in with the Jon Gruden pursuit despite prominent boosters having wooed Gruden for months. Instead, Hart failed to go after Gruden, fiddled while Knoxville burned, and eventually offered the job to Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy, a coach who interviewed in his Stillwater house and actually picked him up at the airport.

Wouldn't this raise a red flag for you?"

you are getting trolled by internet rumors and wishful thinking. none of the reports that you have linked have even one credible source listed. not one. not gruden's agent, not gruden, not the Tenn AD, just "sources close to the process"

its one step up from an 'inside source' on a message board.

I'm surprised Coastal Carolina's head coach is not more in demand. Being able to tell a good screen door tale and pontificate on the difference between cats and dogs should endear him to some fanbase somewhere.

I'm never not going to believe the opportunity was there. If I was in your position however, I'd probably be saying the same thing.

Gruden’s agent, Bob LaMonte, said that the speculation of his client joining the Vols was a “just a fantasy world.”

“He just said there had been a lot of rumors and he just wanted to clear the air,” LaMonte said. “I said, ‘Thank you for the call. I appreciate it.’ He said thank you and that was it.”

In fact, LaMonte stated that he never spoke with Tennessee athletic director Dave Hart. “I don’t know Dave Hart. I’d never met him or talked to him."

LaMonte said Gruden has no plans to leave ESPN, where he is in his fourth season as a commentator for Monday Night Football.

“Jon has made it clear he’s committed to ESPN,” LaMonte said.

LaMonte disputed reports that Gruden had been offered a contract or been negotiating terms to take the Tennessee job.

Trust me I've read it. Listen to the clip and get back to me. You do realize there are certain implications for any publicity of this for Gruden and ESPN, not to mention his final paycheck from Tampa.

Gruden's turning down NFL jobs. I don't care how much you woo him, he has better options. What is all in? Do you really think that Tennessee would offer him more than the NFL teams where his skillset is more applicable?

you are being ridiculously silly. any agent would talk up any job opportunities and try to leverage into a salary increase

you think he would take the Tennessee job? why? he likes hanging out with overall-wearing hillbillies with crappy high school football so he can go and talk to parents and deal with teenagers?

at a school where the boosters think that they run the athletic department (like you say)

i think he'd rather just have his cushy announcing job, and the evidence proves that i am right and you are not

And I thought the Shoney's Big Boy was a fictional character.

Seriously, I lived in Memphis until the 10th grade and the UT fans were the second biggest hayseeds, next to the Ole Miss ones.

Worse than Razorbacks?

I forgot about them, but they only aspire to be hayseeds. Including some of my relatives born and raised in Arkansas. The NW part of the state (where Wal-Mart is headquartered and the University is) has grown much more sophisticated, but if you go to Pine Bluff or Fort Smith, it's like going back to the 1940's.

There is a portion of the UT fan base that is actually intelligent, for the record. But I will give you that about 3/4 of our fan base are completely retarded. However, they still show up to pack Neyland when there's a coach and he's winning games. No offense to Georgia Tech, I love the Jackets, but our fan base lacks that ability to do that even in a year where we are in the top ten in the BCS and go to the Orange Bowl (I know I know its a private institution, but being able to pack a stadium has some impact on attractiveness of the job).

Umm...Tech is not private. Some of us have just mastered the arrogance that goes along with being a private school.

Wow, I've always just thought of it as being similar to Vanderbilt (private, small fan base, FORMER little brother to UT,etc.). News to me.

After thinking about it I would have taken any of the following over Jones and consider them better than BJ, yet the genius combination of Hart and Cheek didn't even speak to them. Number one obviously Butch Davis (since he wanted to come, built the greatest college football roster of all time and was completely cleared of wrongdoing at both UNC and Miami); Aside from him I would have taken Dave Doeren, maybe Rich Rod, even Willie Taggart - I consider them all significantly better hires than Butch Jones, and I am strongly confident Hart could have chosen to interview/hire them had he not rushed to Kentucky to interview Jones and hire him on the spot.
Furthermore when we hired Dooley, trying trying to argue he was the best that would come is utter nonsense, considering Sumlin was more than ready to come... and look now.
Reason for

Lets start with Doeren - Dominates the MAC going 15-1, and is 23-4 overall as a coach, and while he took over a great team so did Butch Jones goes 12-9 in the Big East after inheriting Brian Kelly's players. Hm?
Taggart - coached under Jim and Jack Harbaugh, recruits Florida extremely well, and took freaking Western Kentucky from 0-12 to 7-5 with wins over their rivals.

öööö if Paul Johnson has been fired I would take any of those coaches and I think they would come to GT. Now NC State has one and i suspect will be running train soon, while South Florida has the other and we'll see how that works out.

So in a few years I guess we'll know, but I think all of those coaches are going to fare better than Butch Jones and all were on the table for Hart to meet with and he didn't.
