GT and the ACC

What would make us relevant in any Power5?
We would fill up the stadium for all Big10 games, and not just with Big10 fans. Tech fans longing to see good football teams would return, and, depending on the coach, the team would improve, even if only gradually. And Big10 fans who don't make it to Atlanta would be watching on TV, if for no other reason than to watch their team. Those kinds of things build relevance. Of course, the same could be said of re-joining the SEC, but sadly, that will never happen

Ehhh we would HOPEFULLY end up in the East. If that were the case, yes we would have a full stadium most weeks. But there would still be the Marylands, Rutgers, and Indiana who wouldn’t necessarily draw a huge crowd. If we came as a package deal with someone like UVA they might stick us in the West. Or they could move Indiana over. In the West we’d have some slightly less attractive draws.

If we filled the stadium for the good teams, that would at some point result in more season tickets being sold, so hopefully we would have good crowds even for the lesser teams. Worth a shot.

It was just a question, answer the question, jerk! Johnny McEnroe

Sounds like the Paul Johnson Era that everyone complained about!
Last 3 years of Paul Johnson's career @ GT, he was 17-19 before he quit....leaving the talent bowl damn near completely empty. In that stretch were a 3-9 year and a 5-6 year.

Paul was a hell of a coach but the future wasn't exactly "trending upward" during the end of his GT tenure.

We were 7-5 his last regular season here and missed the ACCCG by one game. In 2016 we won 9 games a bowl and beat UGA. Yes 2017 was rough at 5-7 we also lost 4 games by 5 points I believe.

People were mad because we didn’t beat the National Championship contending Tigers and Duke for some reason.

None of what you said changes the fact that we had a losing combined record over his last 3 years. Couple that with the horrendous recruiting and once you look at the returning roster, I think you'll figure out why CPJ decided to retire. He knew the next couple of years were going to be tough because he was struggling to get talent.

Well we were actually 21-16 his last 3 years and had a two deep of upperclassmen option lineman returning for 2019 and 2020 along with Nate Woody at DC who appears to be pretty good based on results at Army. If he stayed we would’ve been pretty good.

Unless you’re saying his last 3 years ended prior to 2018 because he “quit” before that season.

The ACC is a basketball conference. Duke, Wake Forest, North Carolina and to a lesser extent, NC State are “basketball first ” programs. If their football team happens to be good then fine, but they don’t live or die by it. And please do not cite Wake Forest as a contender in the ACC championship game. That is just embarrassing. I’ll bet more people tuned in to watch PBS then watch that stupid Pittsburgh versus WF championship game.

GT needs to get the heck out of the ACC. Fortunately, that seems to be a possibility as that was a major question on the survey this year.

I liked the 9 team ACC. Don’t give a öööö about playing the old big east schools, all suck in every way possible. I’d love to go SEC but we should jump at a chance to join the BIG if offered. Btw the ACC network sucks ass.

PBS is quality television. Pitt versus Wake Forest not so much.

Which survey?

Georgia Tech should have gone to the Big Ten nine years ago and needs to go to the Big Ten now. Part of the recruiting problem and the reason that we stay irrelevant is because we play in the sorry ACC.
I’m not opposed to the B1G because of money, especially if the scenario above kept Rutgers out of the B1G.

However I’m not sure that playing games against Ohio State, Wisconsin, or Michigan will get many viewers in Georgia or be attractive to recruits. The negative recruiting would be “do you really want to play football in Minneapolis in the winter?”

Our 2015, 2017 & 2018 recruiting classes were ranked the same or higher than our 2021 class; but for some reason people think that roster was horrendous and our current roster is stacked. What will really be head scratching is if any of CPJ's players see the field in year 4.
