How good is FSU, really?

I'm not trying to rain on anyone's celebration or anything, but in looking at their season's accomplishments so far, I just don't get the feeling that they are very good.

And certainly the FSU faithful have whined that this was coming sooner or later, and that this is a rebuilding year.

But I mean hey, they do have Golson and Cook. And they played pretty well defensively and have all season.

So is this just a case of F$U fans being sore losers and all, or are they really not even Top 20 caliber?

I didn't feel they were very good last year either. They're a good team that has managed to win a lot of 50-50 games. I think they're top 20 caliber, but probably not top 10 caliber. I don't think anyone has looked at them as an unstoppable juggernaut.

People said the same thing about them last year, but they ended up going 13-0 and making the playoff. Sometimes it's just about winning, which they had done 28 times in a row in the ACC. Lots of good teams (including us, 2 years straight) have had a shot at them for almost 4 years now, and nobody has beaten them but us.

That is an accomplishment, I don't care what anybody says. Moreover, we beat a top 10 team with our DEFENSE. They didn't turn the ball over 1000 times. They didn't drop passes, they didn't miss open receivers, they didn't trip and fall in the open field. We stuffed them over and over and over again, including what is probably the 2nd best RB in the country. Let that sink in for a minute.

We knew FSU was flawed coming in to this game. Once again, Roof had a game plan dialed up to take away the run and make a team beat him with the pass. It was quite similar to UGA last year. Hats off to the defense for keeping FSU out of the end zone (with the exception of getting terrible field position from a turnover). Fisher is putting Golsen in a position to win by not over pressing. Golsen had to press this game; the short passes weren't going to get him touchdowns. He just couldn't connect on the long pass.

Now that the excitement has worn off, time to belittle our accomplishment. Well done. Idiot

They know how to win. This is college football, everyone has flaws. They are good, were on a 6-game win streak and a 28-game ACC win streak.

They will likely lose another game this year, maybe 2, but we beat them.

+1

Also good enough to be 35-1 over the last 3 years. You have to have more than luck to pull that off.

FSU will finish 9-3 or 10-2. Losing @Clemson isn't bad and I think they can beat UF if Jimbo has good gameplan. They're probably the 3rd best team we've played all year, but they have a solid defense and Dalvin Cook is one of the best players in America. We won by great defense and preventing Cook from having big impact. I still think they're a top 15-20 team. They've been pretty öööö good to not turn ball over all year except for 1 time.

Very good points to be sure. And we will find out just how good they are in the next 5 weeks. Maybe they will notch wins over Clempson and UF?

Even if they aren't overly skilled, they have plenty of talent, so that alone means a bit. Building on top of that, many teams can have talent. Georgia has talent, but Georgia certainly hasn't won as many games as FSU has over the past couple of years (or it's own division for that matter). So FSU has more going for it than just talent. Maybe they aren't the best team, but they are still probably the 2nd or 3rd best team we play this year (with a shot to beat the best team we play this year).

They are very similar to UGA this year. Top 10 talent without an elite QB - so if Golson has an average/below average day and the opponent has a competent offense they are beatable.

I see what you're saying - it didn't feel like a 2-5 team matched up with an undefeated Top 10 team should have felt going into the game. I don't think anybody thought we didn't stand a chance. But that's because we're better than our record suggests. It's hard to argue that a team that's lost one game in the last 2.5 seasons isn't a Top 10 team.

We knew Florida State was not as good as Clemson. That's why I figured we'd probably lose by two scores and not see a result similar to what Clemson did to Miami. Nevertheless, having seen enough of the rest of the top 25, I think 9th was probably about right for the Noles going into last week. For some reason the college football world tends to think that a top ten team should be absolutely dominant every week unless they're playing another similarly ranked team and that simply isn't how the sport works anymore, and it hasn't for a while. Of course, that doesn't apply to SEC teams in the minds of most.

Clemson is a better, more complete team than Florida State but Florida State has more in the way of star power. Clemson is legit and should be in the playoff even if they lose to FSU, assuming they win out. But I will not be surprised to see the Seminoles give them fits or even pull the upset.

Roof dialed up a gameplan to stop the run and force the QB to make plays...... Sounds like UGA last year and gets me hyped up for COFH 2015 edition at BDS. THWG

Really though, some comments on reddit nailed it that FSU has been getting away with wins they shouldn't have for a long time...

It's hard to win consistently. 6-0 against even mediocre teams is pretty good. I think they will finish the season with only 2-3 losses.

Mods plz ban

Hahaha, hey, I didn't say one way or the other. I actually agree with you turds that they are a good team. I've also just heard a lot of whining and excuse making from the FSU fan base that made me wonder if they really were on a down year bigger than what was expected after losing the crab man.
