How many games would we have won if we still had Butker?

edit: additional wins if we had Butker:

Tennessee 2017 (missed FGs)
Miami 2017 (KO returns)
Virginia 2017 (KO returns)
South Florida 2018 (KO returns)

Four of our last seven losses would have flipped with a good kicker, yielding 8 or 9 wins in 2017.

Imagine how many games we’d win if we still had JT5, Calvin Johnson, Demaryius Thomas, Anthony Allen, Jonathan Dwyer, Morgan Burnett, Derrick Morgan!!!!! We’d be so good!!

A good kicker will be the leading scorer on your team... not sure why so many in college football ignore it. Then again, GT has 3 or 4 on scholarship right now, so maybe it is just a role that is easy to whiff on.

How did we lose Trey Flowers? Just how?

Pretty sure we have one K (King) and one P (Harvin) on scholarship right now. And they all played OK on Saturday. Harvin had a great punt and then a bad punt, neither really mattered in the game. And those long return were not the fault of Davis. Maybe he could've gotten more air under them, but at least one of the KO's was fielded right in the corner at the goalline, excellent placement. Our coverage just really sucked.

Are you sure they are all walk ons? Roster online says we have the following PKs

Brenton King
Wesley Wells
Cliff Gandis
Shawn Davis

I thought at least King and Davis have scholarships.

Either way, doesn't change the point - a PK should be the leading scorer on most teams.

That's why yesterday's loss was so frustrating. Our defense was playing so well -- USF could barely move the ball at all, and scoring from the 25 after a touchback would have been an almost impossible proposition for them. But without a good kicker they were mostly relegated to the sideline...

We said we'd win with at least 3 maybe 4 games with a slightly better defense last year. We're not there this year. And now special teams is giving up two touchdowns a game. This is going to be another long year. I don't know when it's not going to be a long year. Maybe in a couple years our defense will be good enough to win us some games.

Yeah, pretty sure only King is on scholly. The others certainly weren't last year, and I don't remember hearing any of them had gotten one.

The PK is the leading scorer if he's hitting a lot of FGs. Right now, King has one FG and nine XPs, giving him 12 points. KB and TQM also have 12 points each, and TO has 18 pts.

Wouldn't matter. This team doesn't have the killer instinct on D to hold leads after we go up, and no special player on offense (like JT was) to put the team on his back and say "give me the damn ball".

Harvin has such a big leg. It makes ZERO sense to me that he is not handling kickoff duties.

I must have missed the two TD returns from Alcorn.

Let’s save this kind of statement until after a few more games. Saturday was a comedy of errors, hardly a statistic.

There may be some truth to this. It also bears mention that we had Bama's kicker inked last year and they stole him out from under us.

How much of being a good kicker is natural, and how much is coached? I don't know the answer to this question. Can you find someone with insane leg strength and teach them to be a good kicker?

Punting is a completely different motion than kicking. Sure, a great punter has an advantage over the average person when it comes to kicking just due to leg strength, but it's not the same at all. I played soccer and had the leg strength to consistently hit a 40-45 yard field goal in HS, but I couldn't punt for shit. Harvin probably punts more than twice as far as I could have ever done. It's just not the same, and if Harvin hasn't practiced it he won't be good at it.

There is a kid Cory Munson (3 Star) out of Northside ( Same school as Tobias Oliver) who has begged to play for Georgia Tech... He has since Committed to WKU after Coaches at GT said they would not offer a scholarship to a kicker...

He can make deep field goals and kick it into and sometimes out of the end zone, unlike out current batch of kickers...

Interesting - I thought we had more on scholarship!
