How many games would we have won if we still had Butker?

There may be some truth to this. It also bears mention that we had Bama's kicker inked last year and they stole him out from under us.

How much of being a good kicker is natural, and how much is coached? I don't know the answer to this question. Can you find someone with insane leg strength and teach them to be a good kicker?
The Bama flip (Bulovas) has not done great over there.

Can we look forward to a thread like this for each player, coach and concept?

Like: How many games would we have won if we didn't have Academic Progress Rate?

Are you sure they are all walk ons? Roster online says we have the following PKs

Brenton King
Wesley Wells
Cliff Gandis
Shawn Davis

I thought at least King and Davis have scholarships.

Either way, doesn't change the point - a PK should be the leading scorer on most teams.
Brenton King is On Scholly , he was slated to go to Old Dominion and then we lost J. Bullovis to Bama.... So we had to scramble Brenton king can not kickoff that is why we are having the other two do it..... This Scholarship is the reason why they do not want to give Cory Munson a scholly.... We need to figure it out soon

Can he kick it out of the end zone?
Not regularly, even though he was an Army All-American Bowl kicker in HS. He couldn't beat out Bama's mediocre kicker last year, so he RS. This year he's competing with a Temple transfer. Per rolltide.com, Bulovas kicked off nine times and got three touchbacks in the Louisville game.

For all the talk about how everyone else is better at recruiting than we are, it ain't an exact science for anyone. Even for what is probably the least athletic position on the team.

We need to give 1 scholarship to a placekicker per year, period.
Ummm, NO. I doubt any successful college program in the land has 4 scholarship kickers out of the 85 limit. Period.

the answer is a bunch better --but Butker? really, -gee you want the BEST in Tech history back--how about Joe H, Eddie Lee and and Calvin?

If dedicating two extra scholarships to rolling the dice on kickers can get us 3 or 4 extra wins per year, then it's what we must do.
But rolling the dice is not necessarily GOING to get you 3 or 4 wins. What happens when you have eventually have 2 or 3 or even 4 solid kickers on the roster who can all kickoff and all can hit field goals with regularity?

We don't need depth at O Line, Linebacker, DLine, Defensive Back, ABack, BBack or QB. But hey, we have FOUR kickers who can kick...that's gonna win us games. We'll just play soccer instead of football.

Holy hell, dude. Step away from the keyboard. That's almost silly it's so foolish.

Yeah, I love Butker as much as the next guy, and obviously he's better than King is now, but TBH he wasn't that consistent until his senior year. In 2014 and 2015 he hit 18/29 FGs (62%). Senior year he was at 91%.

We have to remember that these 18-19 year olds do get stronger and better as they go. You're not going to find a lot of kickers who are Butker-level good (ie, NFL-draft-worthy) coming out of HS. Gotta give 'em time.

And the idea of having a bunch of scholarship kickers is crazy. The kicker is on the field for a handful of plays each game, and is among the least likely players to get injured. And what position do we want to underrecruit to be super deep in kickers? OL? DL? QB? They're all important, but in the grand scheme, K's probably the one where you choose to be short.

There is a kid Cory Munson (3 Star) out of Northside ( Same school as Tobias Oliver) who has begged to play for Georgia Tech... He has since Committed to WKU after Coaches at GT said they would not offer a scholarship to a kicker...

He can make deep field goals and kick it into and sometimes out of the end zone, unlike out current batch of kickers...

So what?

Brenton King kicked a 56 yd FG in high school too. Kicking off an elevated tee leads to some inflated high school stats. The ‘hit’ rate on high school kickers is low. The kid you referenced has a scholarship to WKU. Did he turn down major program scholarships? Maybe he isn’t as good as you think.

Wouldn't matter. This team doesn't have the killer instinct on D to hold leads after we go up, and no special player on offense (like JT was) to put the team on his back and say "give me the damn ball".
Oliver sure looked like it, albeit one dimensional. The OL seemed to get together and say lets pave the way for Tobias.
As for the kicking woes, blame it on Satan. He stole our no.1 kicker signee.

It's unlikely we can. Taking last Saturday as an example, saying that we would have won with a better kicker implies that our defense would have stopped them on both extra possessions their offense got, because they won by 11 points.

However, our defense allowed touchdowns on five of their ten drives, so that seems like a very iffy assumption. Now throw in losing two more schollies to kickers and it's probably even dicier.

Well He out kicked everyone at GT this summer.... You can look at all the Kicking camps he is highly ranked..Hits the ball off the ground.... Both UGag and GT want Kickers on the cheap and offer PWO, which he laughed at.....Again.... GT is the team with Kicking Issues.... Brenton King can not kick the ball off that is why the PWO kids are kicking the ball off... Just bcuz Brenton King sucks doesn't mean Munson does....

I'd rather have 3 scholly kickers than let those scholarships get awarded to walk ons every year as they currently are.

If we have four, then at least we'll have one.

You’d never know we lost by 11 this past weekend reading this thread about place kickers. I wish a field goal was our biggest issue.

Uhh. Where'd their first 14 points come from again?

NO, you would not. We have 3 on board right now and 2 are scholarship and you aren't happy with any of the 3 of them. Giving 4 scholarships to kickers is no guarantee that any of them will be worth a damn either. All you'll do is ensure that you don't actually have quality depth elsewhere on the staff.

Oh and FYI, the issue with 'their first 14 points' wasn't the kicker. The first kick was literally text book on the perfect placement for a kickoff and we couldn't cover it. We likewise didn't cover the 2nd one either. Maybe your opinion is that we ought to give at least one scholarship every year to a kickoff coverage person as well? Or maybe 2 per year so we have one on each side? I mean, it's not like we have to have depth on offense or defense or anything!

Holy hell dude...don't double down on idiocy.
