How to fix our team

We need to find out why we can't recruit and fix that problem. If the current coaching staff is THE reason we can't recruit then fire all of them and start over; but I seriously think the problem is elsewhere. A revolving door of Defensive Coordinators is not a solution.

Good high school players don’t want to continue playing in their old high school offense in college. They’re ready to grow up and play big boy football.

Gailey's Rivals Recruiting Rankings, for 2003-07, were #50, #56, #62, #57, and the good class, which was #18.

The 2008 class was #49. It had 10 players, out of 20, which committed before Gailey was fired. They were all 2* and 3*. Some players like Renfree decommitted, but there was no sign the 2008 class was going to finish at 2007 levels.

FWIW, GT is also #43 in average attendance. Then you have the various academic issues on top of it. If Gailey stayed through 2008, 2009, etc. classes, I really don't think classes would magically stay at 2007 levels. There is no sign of that. And if a new coach really was that magically good at recruiting *and* he was a great coach on-field, GT couldn't afford him for very long anyway.

BTW, CPJ's classes, from 2009, have finished #49, #43, #41, #56, #84, #47, #67, #41. The 2013 class WAS bad. It was penalized for only having 14, but it should have been better. Other classes have generally been in the 40's, like Gailey's classes.
It's not all about "rankings". Go back and compare Gailey defensive lines vs defensive line today - no comparison. Gailey had a good eye for guys like Walker, Henderson, Roberson, Wheeler and Reis who were not highly ranked but talented. He should have won more games, but didn't.

Sorry to come off as an asshole, but why did the "good eye" only work for one side of the ball?

The defense took a big step back in 2007 as well, with the same coaches. Why did the good eye not work for later signees?

There are more substantial arguments to be made. For example, recruiting rankings have statistically significant correlation with team success the next year. They're really imperfect, generally going off of self-reported offers, but they still have predictive value.

For one thing, our recruiting rankings were generally in the 40's with CCG. Where did his teams usually finish up, if you had to make a 1-120 ranking? Usually in the 30's through 50's. 2006 was the exception.

Feeling completely defeated after this season. We are not a good football program right now and our problems are many. I want to see several major changes this offseason, on both the team and program levels, because incremental ones ain't gonna cut it. 38-7 is unacceptable. Go Jackets.

As I recall, Vance Walker wasn't highly recruited, but VT made a hard late push to try to get him.
