I’ve been following GT football

Good responses on this thread and know the feedback comes from folks that love GT football. I’m one as well but have a few thoughts:

1. Say what you want about CBK, but he is in no way a whiner. You don’t start four years on the OL for O’leary and coach for he and Saban and be a whiner. There is no scenario where this happens.

2. I’m old enough to remember when GT football mattered across this state. If your under the age of 40, I doubt it even registers.

3. GT fans have always been obtuse and impossible to please…but loyal. We were proud that our athletes have to go to class and celebrate when they graduate. Some of us even hire them…if we can.

4.That said, I think the school has given up on athletics. We can write all the checks we want, buy season tickets, and fight the good fight but the admin doesn’t care nor do they even try to care. They care about academic standings, research dollars, and tuition payments. They don’t give two craps about our legacy… they are simply out of touch.

I think CBK could do a good job if given the proper support; however, not even Bobby Dodd himself could overcome the challenges of this administration.

I have to take issue with point #4. At least since Cabrera got here (but concede the point prior to that). Cabrera cares a lot about athletics but the landscape shifted dramatically and he already had his hands full with the two idiots I won't bother naming. So while I see where you are coming from, it takes time for an ocean liner to pull a U-Turn. Remains to be seen what our ceiling really is but its way higher than where we are today. Just look at what is happening with basketball. That's not a coincidence. Subtract Cabrera and all three of them are still working here.

Physically ill? You’ve been telling us all week we were going to lose. And you were right. How does that make you sick?

Anyone that gets “physically ill” from watching kids play a game needs to step back and take a hard look at themselves.
I'm a big fan of the hard look

I sincerely hope you’re right and I’m wrong, but firing the worst AD and head coach was easy.Time will tell.

For close to 50 years now. I can still remember my first game. My family was living in Chamblee and I listened to GT play in the Peach Bowl in the old Fulton County Stadium in 1971 against Ole Miss if I remember correctly. Ever since that night I was hooked on the Gold and White. Over the years I have seen the worst and the best of GT football. I’ve had a sibling play on The Flats. I suffered as we all did through the BL and GC years, but I’ve also experienced the highs as well.

I don’t believe in all this time I have seen as much inconsistency in GT football as I have seen over the past few years, exclude clown years. We win games we have no business winning and we lose games that just make me scratch my head until it bleeds. We knock off top 20 teams and we lose to FCS and lower D1 teams. We have looked like a top ranked team and we have looked just flat out piss poor.

I can recall the days when top teams DREADED coming to Historic Grant Field to play. (To Hell with Hyundai) They knew there was a chance they were going to get their a$$e$ handed to them. And a lot of times we beat their ass and sent them home with an L. I can remember when we played the toughest SEC schedule when in the same year we played Auburn, Alabama, Tennessee, and Ugay in the same damn year. Now we are playing in what might be, at best, the fourth best conference in the country.

I wish I had an answer. I will always cheer for GT no matter how bad it gets, but it has been darn tough the last few years.

With all that said, I would not be one bit surprised if we knock off North Carolina next week. I don’t think it will happen, but I won’t be shocked either.

Collins was consistent--consistently TERRIBLE.

You are Correct! Dark years on the Flats have never lasted this long before:

Bud Carson Era
1967 4-6
1968 4-6
1969 4-6
1970 9-3

Bill Curry Era
1979 4-6-1 (Pepper Rodgers final year)
1980 1-9-1
1981 1-10
1982 6-5

Bobby Ross Era
1987 2-9
1988 3-8
1989 7-4

Bill Lewis Era
1992 5-6
1993 5-6
1994 1-10
1995 6-5 (George O'Leary First full Season)

What makes the Clown Collins / B. Key Era worse is it appears that neither coach is a good game day coach, and both are to blame for recruited over-rated (4 star) players that have not lived up to their recruiting ratings and were both in over their heads as HC on the FLATS:

Clown Collins/B. Key
2019 3-9
2020 3-9
2021 3-9
2022 5-7
2023 3-4

When you look at the numbers Key is a little better Coach then Clown, but so much worse then the coaches we have had on the flats in teh last 50 years.

First 15 games of Clown & Key
Geoff Collins
4-11
avg. Point differential of loss
16.4

Brent Key
7-8
avg. Point differential of loss
8.8

Note: The loss to Boston College was Tech’s fourth straight loss at home to an ACC opponent. The Jackets are now 5-12 in their last 17 ACC home games and 9-20 at Bobby Dodd Stadium since the start of the 2019 season.

To me it is very interesting as Brent Key was Clown Collins Associate Head Coach. I see the problem is that Coach Key recruited these guys as AHC or HC This is what happens when you keep half the staff of a failed regime. Should have cleaned house with a complete overhaul. The fans are left looking at Tulane and Liberty and wondering what would have happened had Jamey Chadwell or Willie Fritz been hired on the FLATS!

Don't necessarily want to add to our misery but we hired the former guy because the program was trending downward before him. But I certainly understand why you'd like to time stamp this misery starting with the former guy.

2018 was a winning season, so it doesn’t belong in the list. We hired the dipshit because CPJ retired, we had no money to hire somebody decent, and because TS was a dumbass.

In 2016 we went 9-4 beat UGA and won the bowl game. In 2017 3 of our losses were by a total of 6 points. In 2018 we were one game away from the ACC CG.

I get it we weren’t beating UGA and Clemson and it made people cry. Times weren’t so bad though. And both those teams were top 5 teams at the time too.

Correct and what makes all this worse is that Paul Johnson wanted to retire after the 2016 season. AD TSTAN begged Paul not to to retire to give him more time to hire someone...(CPJ coached two more years out of respect to Georgia Tech) It is mind boggling that Clown Collins and his Associate Head Coach B.Key are the ones that ADTSTAN & John Dewberry have trusted the program with. The only question is how long until the new AD, J Batt can get a real HC in place?

Since that great 2014 season and the Orange Bowl we were 24-25 (?) Just kinda' meh with one decent season. Not exactly a trending upwardly program.

Lots of $. How many so called fans on this board don’t buy tickets? At least the ones far away should at least donate.

Also, the GTAA not being the worst run athletic dept in Div 1 would help.

The ticket thing is overblown. uga has millions of fans to sell approximately 80,000 tickets (removing the student and visitor allotment. Lets just take metro Atlanta. 6 million people. There are a lot of other SEC fans in the area but we could assume at least 40% are dwag fans, right? So they have a pool of 2.4 million prospective ticket buyers within a short drive. Then take GT. Lets assume 10% of metro Atlanta are GT fans, so 600k. GT needs almost 10% of our fans to buy tickets to sell out the stadium. Georgie needs less than 3%. And I'll be honest my assumptions are probably wrong about the size of both fan bases (and probably the opposite direction of my assumptions here unfortunately).

Lets add to that, lets assume georgie plays teams on a schedule similar to ours (the closest campus of any other P5 team we play is UNC, 6 hours away), and lets assume they haven't been to a bowl game since before covid, and lets assume in the last 5 years they had lost to G5 and FCS schools AT HOME no less.... and do we think they would have an attendance problem too? Of course they would.

Why spend your money to go watch GT football? Just go to disney world. Mickey Mouse is undefeated.

2. I’m old enough to remember when GT football mattered across this state. If your under the age of 40, I doubt it even registers.

I'm 41 and I can speak to this. I live in Tennessee and have for many years now. I have a guy here I recently started doing business with, probably in his early 60's and noticed he had uga cufflinks. I asked him if he went to school there and he said "No, but I grew up in Georgia and basically you were either a uga fan or a Tech fan." And I thought wow those must have been the times.

When I was in high school it was the 90's and uga wasn't that great. I would say there were a fair number of uga fans but it wasn't obnoxious like it is today. And there were a good bit of GT fans. But I noticed going through MS and HS that a lot of kids who weren't married to either team started picking other teams. FSU was really popular with my friends. Auburn and Florida too. And the occasional Kentucky and Duke fans from the basketball crowd. All these were kids who were born in Georgia with no allegiance to these other schools.

Maybe we should put Jim Donan and Ray Goof in the GT hall of fame. Better days for us indeed.

Amen, brother.

We used to have guys on defense who'd fly around and make plays. The last good defensive player I can remember is Gotsis, and he graduated in '15. We used to lose multiple great defensive players per year pre 2010ish. Now, it's just pure mediocrity, and I can't remember a player since Gotsis that I was honestly upset about graduating/leaving our program on the defensive side of the ball.
...and he didn't grow up playing American football.

That isn't at all what your numbers show. Carson had eight wins in his first two seasons. Curry had 2! Ross had 5. Each of them took over a team playing .500 football or better over the last couple seasons before them. Key has 7 wins in a season and a half after inheriting a team won 7 games over the prior two and a half years.

There are ~50-70K GT alumni versus ~200-250K UGA alumni living in GA. Multiply the number of alumni by 5-10 for a friends and family factor and there's your fan base for ticket sales.

You do your argument a disservice by lumping two Head Coaches together as it makes your bias show

Schools that are competitive at sports and have good engineering programs seem to usually have engineering programs siloed off as a "competitive major" inside a larger school with a less competitive broader curriculum. Having narrow curriculum has always been a challenge. The new problem is that college sports is now explicitly all about money and that is predominantly driven by the number of fans. If you are GT with ~150-170K living alumni, how do compete with UGA with 350-370K living alumni or a Big 10 school with 500-700K living alumni?

I do not see any scenario where GT is going to dumb down its core major offerings to become a larger school in order to be better at sports. If there were a way to merge with another school that would bring a broader, major offering and significant student / alumni base and it could be done in a way that would maintain the prestige of the "competitive majors" then who knows maybe?
