I almost dread the 3 way QB race this summer...

Okay, which one of our 4 star QB verbal commitments will de-commit after watching Taylor Bennett's outstanding performance yesterday?

I am excited about the race and I think it is more like 5 ways. I think Booker and Garner should be in the mix. The best thing we could do for our incoming freshman QB's is redshirt them. Then one year behind the starter and playing their redshirt sophomore year. My fear is that these two guys committed because they were told one of them would start next year ala Reggie and Pat Carter four years ago.

This does concern me as well as RB was promised something illogical or else ....

But if that is true and those guys were promised something then they need to be told the truth now so they can go somewhere else now before they sign and show up.

D Rad, must insist on a QB coach. Hell, offer Norm Chow the Assist. HC job and make him an offer he can't refuse.

I don't think he wants to become a College HC because of all the crap that goes along with it. He could however take a NFL HC job. If not then throw the check book at him.

One is already enrolled and not to take anything away from TB but WVU has one of the worst pass defenses in the country.

Woah, mover...

Going into this game, we didn't know if Ball failed to develop because 'Ball the freshman' displayed all of the potential that Ball possessed, because of a lack of QB coaching, or because of a lack of decent playcalling.

Based on one data point, it is now possible that we have a coach capable of developing a Low Div 1 prospect into a BCS League QB.

Granted, why they welded, padlocked and superglued our wagon to Reggie this year is beyond me. The fact that a 44% completion rate didn't merit a try with TB is a mystery of the universe. Logic would say that the only reason to not change was an obvious dropoff to the #2. An obvious dropoff from RB's performance would be a team in the cellar of the ACC IMHO.

Luckily, the pleasant reality is that it appears that we MIGHT have a better QB in 2007 than 2006. And we have a veteran team that will be OUTSTANDING if the OL continues to improve like they did in 2006.

To summarize, Ball is ancient history. But there is no excuse not to have a developed backup as that is a major part of the QB coach's job. Perhaps where Nix failed to improve Ball he actually succeeded in developing TB.

Ricky, All the throws weren't perfect, but many were. Granted the guys were more open than usual, but he was seeing them. And when he scrambled he still had a throw mentality which I like. He looked like he knew where people were supposed to be. Even after the play broke down. Everyone seemed to be on the same page. He even threw to the TE.

If I had $1 for every time I saw Reggie 'drawing' on his hand and jawing at a receiver that they ran the wrong way...

I can't disagree with you Crew my point was that I saw NOTHING in the game yesterday that would make me change my commitment to play QB at GT.
I should have made that clear and didn't.

IMO:

There is no QB race. Bennett just won it, and Tech will benefit greatly from redshirting both of these hotstuff new QB recruits for the future. We'll get 2 years out of Bennett, and have two excellent redshirt sophomores to chose from in 2009.

Disagree beej, the position is open as it should be TB's got a leg up but IMO the job's not his yet.

Wouldn't it be interesting if CJ went to Chan and said I will come back if you guarentee Tater is my QB.

Well that would be intresting but I personally think CJ got to much CLASS to do something like that.

Two things I note about Chan after five years:
1. He is a slow learner. (But, he is a learner)
2. He is stubborn.
Keeping that in mind I predict:
1. TB will start in '07 unless he has a very bad spring. If that happens, Threatt, Ingram, or Garner have a good shot to start.
2. If he decides he likes Nesbitt at QB, I believe Nesbitt will play a series or two every game with a package that features his athletic ability. In this scenario Threatt would redshirt.
So, my prediction is two years of Bennett as starter with Nesbitt or Threatt as backup, with the backup getting playing time.
Garner seems a likely transfer out, and look for Manley and Ingram to find a place to contribute if these three do not finish 1 or 2 on the depth chart.

Beej, the real question is do you trust Gailey to play the right QB? I don't. Bennett just proved without a doubt that Gailey has no idea what he's doing when evaluating a QB.

As witnessed by the firing of Dave Wilson and the stepping down as OC, Chan requires four years to make all decisions. So he should have this whole coaching thing figured out by, what, 2022?

GUYS this is very important....

Let's not make the same mistake we did with RB and anoint Taylor QB for life based on this one game. We need to get Threet and Nesbitt signed up before we start misleading them that we've got all the QB's we will need for 2-3 years. We need to get these guys in here and let them compete for the job from day 1 fair and square.

At least Taylor can only be a two year mistake, not four.

Gailey was screwed no matter what happened in the Gator Bowl, no matter what Bennett did on the field, in the eyes of people like you. If TB sucked it up, you'd be on here bitching about Gailey not developing a backup. If TB did great, you'd be on here bitching about not benching Reggie. And you'd have just enough evidence to support either case. So yeah, have fun with that.

That said, we never see TB again, but he looked like a real QB to me, something we haven't had since Godsey.

- No one is talking about Byron Ingram. The entire staff is high on him and he will get equal looks in the spring with Taylor and Threet. Byron will come out of spring ahead of Garner and Manley on the depth chart. Lets not even discuss Booker as he is not on scholarship and he has not shown up to any workouts as of yet.

- Yes...Taylor underthrew the ball multiple times including 2 big catches by CJ and 1 by JJ. Taylor is not an accurate passer...yet. The difference between RB and Taylor is at least Taylor can see what is going on out there and let it fly so our superstar WR can get a grab. NO OTHER receiver in college football gets some of those passes. One was into triple coverage...not normally considered a good QB decision. I do think it has been a bad decision to not play Taylor more the past couple years when it was obvious RB had hit the ceiling.

- Imagine if we could get a QB that sees the field, makes good reads....then throws an accurate ball !! Maybe it is Taylor...maybe Byron....or maybe Threet or Nesbitt. Most likely scenario is Taylor starting against ND with a backup getting some early time.
