Spelling.
In second grade a visiting master’s degree student working under an Educational Doctor at the University of Rhode Island were working on a reading disability called dyslexia.
I was chosen as a K-Study to try learn more about the disability and try new techniques for decoding & encoding for reading and spelling.
In 3rd grade we moved from Rhode Island to Gainesville Florida, after my father left the Navy as an aviator, and was a K-Study for U of F where I continued with work on my dyslexia.
Sadly, while I improved my reading skills I was taught how to spell phonetically which only works about 50% of the time for the English Language. It is very hard for me to picture sight words in my head.
In high school very, few educators knew of dyslexia & I received a very poor education in my writing classes. My reading comprehension skills were excellent but had a stigma on putting pen to paper, for fear of my spelling skills, & how my English teachers would view my work.
When at GSU I gained the help, I needed to write without fear of criticism on spelling and was graded more on content and less on spelling.
Although I don’t use spell check much anymore, while I was working it was a god send.
I was very lucky. A lot of students with dyslexia never had the help I did.
And now you know.
