Introducing Woody...

How about someone just summarize the bits I don't already know. I watched five minutes and got pretty bored with it. He say anything useful?

We're gonna throw ROCK. If that doesn't work, you'll get an occasional SCISSORS.

No PAPER, though. That's for pussies to wipe with.

Basically, he wants guys playing a million miles an hour and would prefer that attitude over obsessing over a certain athletic trait or measurable for guys. Sounded a lot like a CPJ clone but for defense.

Agreed. I think CPJ personally dislikes Ken, and I think it arose when he felt like Ken was "going behind his back" a few years ago.

I think the "going behind his back" stuff has a lot to do with it. If PJ needles you, that's generally an indication he likes you. And if you can take it, he really likes you. He has needled Ken on occasion but not a lot.

Yeah, I remember he and Gaudin seemed to have a great working relationship in that respect.

Love Woody's reading glasses, and the timbre of his voice. Sounds like a coach is supposed to sound.

Things Woody said:
  • Wants to get the "quality of athleticism right at every position." That's a sophisticated way of putting it.
  • Wants best athletes, of course, but would take smaller/faster DL's over bigger/slower.
  • Similarly, would prefer mentally faster/physically slower LB's over physically faster/mentally slower.
  • Made a joke that because he could remember Rod's name he must not have CTE. Hah!
  • Important to cross-train players so you've always got the best 11 on the field.
  • Was surprised CPJ wanted to hire him, since CPJ always beat him soundly when they played each other. (Joke?)
  • Kinda said that working against the 3O prepares defenses to be sound against any offense. Wasn't super articulate on this.
  • Prioritizes what he sees on film over physical attributes. DL has to do more than just fill space — they gotta attack and move.
  • Still evaluating the current roster of players. Not sure how they'll fit into his scheme yet.
  • Will recruit wherever he's told to recruit. Doesn't know where that is yet.
Personally I find it funny that CPJ is wearing last year's bowl fleece.

Things CPJ said:
  • Wants guys to play fast, unencumbered, have fun, run to the ball, create negative plays. (He's said this for years.)
  • Always thought Woody was able to over-perform relative to talent at Wofford.
  • Resonated with him that Woody cut to the chase on reading offenses. Can't miss the forest for the trees.
  • Every established coach in this business can recruit. Recruiting success is mainly about the school. Sounded fatalistic on this point.
  • Thinks depth on the OL next year should be the best its been in a while.
  • Not expecting any attrition from Roof's departure, but understands that may change in the spring.
  • Currently hoping to take 3-4 more recruits in the second signing period, if they're the right guys.
Finally, can we please get a bigger 'GT' backdrop. Every interview, every time, every sport, it fails to cover the background. Who's in charge of that?

Yeah, I remember he and Gaudin seemed to have a great working relationship in that respect.
I think Brandon may have played CPJ's game a bit. You gotta do it the way your boss does it, you know? Not sure he really enjoyed it. Might it have been a reason Gaudin was so quick to look for greener pastures?

Liked listening to the new coach. Sounds like a great personality and fun guy to play for. Reminds me a little of pastner in that regard.

I think cpj was a bit unfair on ken. I think he maybe assumed the question was going somewhere else. To be fair, he's had the recruiting rankings thrown in his face even after good seasons, so its not a surprise he's a little surly on the subject.

Listening... This guy is a great hire. He will find the right talent and put it on the field. I have no doubt our defense is going to improve.

I said Roof wasn't a good hire when he was hired, so my opinion has cred.

I am not so negative as most regarding Ted Roof. That said, I think this guy has a great track record, has maturity and expressed himself very well in this interview. I really like the idea that we need to have kids that like to attack, to chase the football. I think the first look at his chemistry with Paul Johnson was very positive. So, all in all, I think we have made a good hire and I look forward to his first offseason, Spring practice and pre-season workouts to get us ready for the fall of '18. I also understand CPJ's thoughts on recruiting. I just wish he had left alone Ken's question for today - this should be about the new defensive coordinator. But, I agree 100% that our coaches would love to have the five star guys on both sides of the ball. But, the first step is to gauge their interest and if there is little or no interest expressed why spend time recruiting the guy who is going to sign with Bama, Ohio State, Oklahoma, USC, LSU, UGA or a hand full of other options? Second, if there is interest, we then have to decide if this five star kid is a fit for us academically. Reality is that after we have removed from the list those who have little or no interest in us or who can't succeed academically, we are mainly working with the three star guys with only a few exceptions. Having a system that helps these kids compete against programs with more highly regarded recruits is necessary. That was the coach's point, and I agree. What our staff has to own is that for success at Georgia Tech they have to be great talent evaluators, have effective systems, and have everything in place for kids to succeed in becoming better football players and making the grade academically while at Tech.

Shouldn't someone tell the new DC that they practice against the scout team running the opponent's offense, not the TO?
My thoughts exactly. He made no sense saying that. I hope this guy knows what he is doing but, frankly, he doesn’t instill a lot of confidence.

OK, im going to jump in here and correct you clowns.

The scout team doesnt operate during camp. That means most all the practices before the season and during spring as well. So for the bulk of the year, the D practices against Paul's offense. IIWII.

Ok so how does that help the D prepare vs other teams?!

In a lot of ways it doesnt. He is explaining the upside angle of it. The upside being as he points out that run D is way more critical than pass D. So you should have no excuse not to have a good run D. If you get torched by a great passing attack? Well, that iwii.
