Is recruiting getting any better?

It seems like ALL of our foes are stepping up their game. UGA, Clemson, FSU will always outrecruit us, but so is VPISU, UM, Duke(!).

It's apparent on the field that we are out manned. Hell, we looked a little out gunned vs Vandy.

The offense is able to neutralize some amount of talent difference, but I think most of our opponents have crossed the threshold into being able to easily shut it down.

Johnson has been here 9 years. Shouldn't we be expecting him to at least stay on par with ööööing Duke? Does he need to hire some better recruiting coordinators? How do we help him out?

Can we play Duke this season before assuming we aren't on par with them.

I think recruiting is getting better, but I'm not sure what the ceiling is at Georgia Tech for results because I don't know what kind of restrictions we have in place. I only know hearsay.

We weren't outgunned at any level against Vandy. I'd say we played Miami pretty evenly from a jimmy and Joe standpoint.

It's hard to tell because for whatever reason our linemen recruiting (both sides) has been underwhelming despite relatively good press. Whether that's simply coaching or just something that's not clicking betweenwhat makes a good lineman recruit and what we need I don't know. But poor line play makes all of the recruits look bad.

I see what you mean.

My only issue with recruiting has been with the lines of scrimmage. We suffered some significant attrition on both lines, but we are not the only ones. Finding a good pash rusher has been a need, and Simmons has been decent so far this year, but do we have anyone requiring a double team?

Aside from that, I would have expected to see a younger wide receiver stepping up. Maybe he hasn't been given an opportunity yet, but we definitely need an outside deep threat.

There are much much bigger problems for recruiting at Tech. It's not just the majors and "The Hill". Paul is competing with Clemson, Georgia, Alabama, Duke, etc for kids. He has a staff of 5. Duke has 15. Clemson has 30+. Alabama has so many that we can't count them. He doesn't have the man power to fish all the ponds that we would need to in order to get minimally 4* level talent on the lines, skill positions, etc.

"Well, we should just throw some extra $$ at it..." We have two basketball coaches on payroll that aren't actually coaching for us and a bond for a stadium expansion that never should have happened. We can't build expansive "recreation wings" to draw talent like Clemson and Alabama simply because it would take 2-3 times as much because we are located in the city of Atlanta as opposed to BFE SC or AL. There isn't office space in the Edge center for adding staff if we could. Our big doners are largely tapped out from the prior AD(s).

That said, the current AD has big problems to deal with. Fix the budget, drum up more $$ support from the alum, expand and improve facilities where needed, give the football program the adequate support it needs to remain competitive with the regional programs (and that's BEFORE discussing adding majors with The Hill). None of these things are unsurmountable, but the fan base will need to remain patient and support as best they can. Kicking Paul to the curb for something "sexier" with all the current limitation he (Paul) is dealing with is just digging the hole deeper at this point. He's doing what he can with what he has. While it's not great, unless we have someone that can fund several recruiting staff positions, it's not going to get a whole lot better from a talent perspective.

It is operating in the same band as it has for the last 14 years or so.

If you throw out our Kicker commit (2*) we have a 3.25 average...which puts us equal to Miami and above Tennessee, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Ole Miss, etc for 2017. I'm sure this entire post is TIC...but I'm not sure what more you expect from GT.

Lost on all this butthurt with the offense is that our defense is playing better than any season under CPJ since '08. Take out the two freebies we gave Miami which had nothing to do with the defense and they're giving up 15.6 ppg. The talk was that the competition wasn't good, but holding Clemson/Miami to a combined 47 points is fine by me. This after replacing four starters in the secondary. Our defensive recruiting has been pretty damn good lately I'd say. Our DT recruiting is still our weakness and DE was bad up until the last few cycles. But right now we are looking the part. The next step is to get/develop that elite pass rusher that will get us off the field on 3rd and long. But we've gotten a lot of good DBs and LBs over the last few cycles too.

The offense hasn't looked that bad really IMHO - maybe we're still a little spoiled by that 2014 season. If our offense isn't scoring TDs every possession our fans start to get ancy. From what I saw on the field Saturday our offense outmatched their defense. We had two drives stalled out by penalties after they were getting steamrolled. Then the two turnovers. We only punted once or twice didn't we? Honestly that entire game (outside the two turnovers) both looked and felt like the '14 game where our offense was chewing up clock to limit their possessions.

We've lost two games against teams that are both in the Top 10 right now. And arguably looked better overall than the #10 team. Not what we wanted but not the end of the world.

Overall for recruiting I think we're recruiting as well or better on defense other than the DT position (although did we ever sign big name DTs out of HS? seems like we developed good ones). Our WR recruiting has been very good - especially lately. Our RB recruiting has been very good - especially lately. I could see Jeune/Stewart/Mills/Marshall starting for most of other teams in the conference. QB recruiting has been okay. We'll see what we're working with next year. OL has been actually pretty good as well - although the performance on the field isn't the best. The good classes we had the last couple cycles will start to pay dividends next year. I like the way our defense is looking and hopefully we can find another Shaq Mason among the OLs.

This thread is another troll making a case to replace CPJ without blatantly saying it which would result in a ban. See the poll about liking the offense.

Recruiting has been better lately. We need to develop it now that they're signed. We have a freshman pass rusher that has been decent (Simmons, I think), but he is a liability in run support. Once he fixes that, the defense will be pretty good. Certainly adequate for what Paul needs if the offense can be productive. Fix the blocking for those couple bonehead plays and things get better.

When do we stop paying Hewitt? We should throw that money at a recruiting staff as soon as it's off the books
I think he's still owed $2.7M (don't quote me on that...) Gregory is something like $1.2. I think they both come off the books in 2 years???

If we could get 50,000 or so subscriptions sold to some recruiting 'insider' magazine, we'd instantly be doing much better in recruiting.
Sadly more truth to this than the actual talent... Then again, if we did that, we'd be Georgia and pi$$ed that we aren't winning like Bama.
