Is Wake a must win?

Like in that movie Cabin in the Woods
where if they don't complete the ritual sacrifices on time, the works will literally end
kind of must win? No.

But yes.

Key needs to show an upward trajectory for the team this season. If we lose to Wake and then won out in the ACC, that'd be shown. If we beat Wake then have a mediocre rest of the season, it'd be a bad season. Beat UGA and it's a good season. So I don't think Wake is "must win". Depends on the rest of the season.

It's a must-win for my engagement level on the season, at least.

If we lose, I'm done watching any practice reports, post-game pressers, or hoping for any relevancy from our football team at all this season. Will still watch the games but from a withdrawn mindset.

Basically back to the mode I'd get to midway through each season with TFG.

I really lost hope at the Louisville collapse.. I already care less than I did then but another loss would take it down yet another level

It's not a must win because you never know what the rest of the season will bring. Key will be evaluated on the entire season. Beat Wake and lose out is a failure. Lose to Wake but win out is not.

That said, a new coach has to have early successes to keep momentum going. This is the first game where early success can reasonably happen. Wake is no pushover, but they are no juggernaut either. They are a solid team that can, and should, be beaten by Ga Tech.

I'd say it's a very important game for the current regime to prepare the team to play well.

Not a must win. Still early enough to recover. Offense is explosive enough to win games where we’re overmatched on paper. I’m also looking for D to turn a corner this week. I just expect us to beat Wake. Same goes for Duke. Don’t care what their record is. It’s the natural order of things.

That's fair.

If we don't beat Wake, we probably aren't going to be seen as anything other than a underdog against everyone but BG and UVA (and possibly not even then as a road game). It's possibly a must win from a perception standpoint; we could get an upset against someone good but it's more likely to be viewed as a fluke rather than promise.

Need a win to show we are taking another step towards returning the program to a consistent winner. To say if we lose to Wake but win several other games is probably a contradiction. If we lose to Wake we ain’t beating most of the other teams on our schedule. On the flip side … unless we really lay an egg we should be Wake.

Yep.
