Observations from Saturday and some grades.
First, great crowd. And I mean great. Many more Canes fans than I thought there would be. But they are the biggest front runners of any fan base in sports. The ones sitting in front of us were pretty nice.
One of them asked me right before kickoff how many HGF/BDS holds. I said about 54K. He said really? How many will be here? I said 48-50. Mind you, it was right before kickoff and the students hadn't filed in yet. He looked at me with great suspicion on that estimate. Our attendance was, what, 48 and change, once everybody from tailgating got inside? It was great to see the house like that for a non-Georgia game. That's our biggest non Georgia home game crowd since ... anybody know right off?
Second, honestly, I thought it was more likely we'd get boat raced than stay within the cover. They got a lot of firepower on offense and a sturdy run defense. If we were going to have any chance, we'd have to play close to perfect.
We did.
So, grades. And not on a curve. Can't tell you how many times that helped me in Calculus but this time, no curve.
Coaching: A-. We were grousing in the stands about Key calling timeout on defense on third and 1, not running the clock down more when trying to milk it on offense and Trey Cooley running out of bounds (lots of Joe Burns flashbacks to be had). But losing Jamal early, making a thin RB group thinner, running King and Philo back and forth and keeping the team in the game was a pretty damn good job.
Offense: A. See above. Plus, the play call to Singleton on the jet sweep to end the game was great, and somebody must have said something about getting down inbounds. Philo made some good throws and a couple that had my heart in my throat (the last one behind Singleton and off his hands gave me flashbacks of Austin picking off the Mutts over in Athens to set up Qua's winner - same kind of play. He puts it in front of him and Singleton is off to the races.) Wasn't a great day for Malik but he did come up with a clutch catch. O line held up for the most part on the pass rush. No sacks allowed and no turnovers. Can't emphasize those two enough, though Miami did have six TFLs. Plus, 9 of 14 on third downs. That was critical too.
Defense: A-. Three huge fourth down stops. Never got (or really brought) pressure on Ward until late in the game, and they couldn't handle it. Don't know why they didn't run it more - Martinez was effective - and why Cam Ward never looked to run. But Harvey and Daniels were solid for the most part. Ward still finished with 348 and their two TD drives in the second half were scary in that it showed what they could do. Thankfully, Ward was just off or uninterested in the first half. But the heat on the two-point play and on the last play befuddled them. D bent but did not break when it mattered most.
Special teams: B. Singleton's three attempts to return kickoffs and not getting back to the 20 on them is why this is lower. Shanahan's punts weren't things of beauty but they didn't return 'em and we got very good net punting on them. Kicking game didn't kill us and that's a positive these days.
Overall grade: A+. Sometimes the sum is greater than its parts, even when the parts are that damn good.
