Jaybo Shaw Arrested

See, kids are going to get drunk. Period. Point blank. End of story. All these puritanical laws do is force them to do it in cars.

the solution has already been invented. in europe, the drinking age is typically lower that the driving age. (16 to drink, 18 to drive) so by the time the kids get cars, they are done 'getting hammered' because it is novel and dont use their new freedom to drive to drive to Liquor stores waiting for some longhair or redneck or cool dude to walk up and ask him if he will buy them beer and then go driving around or to "the cliffs" or "the alley" or "the benches" (thats what we had). Besides, too many cars on the road, insurance is too high b/c of too many accidents. i think they should raise the driving age and make the test MUCH HARDER, then people might actually know how to operate their motor vehicle if they get a license. there would be fewer bad drivers, and an increase in the size of the market for public transportation. all plusses in my book, oh and make the test pricey. they do all of this in Austria, for example where i have some family. guess what? not nearly as many adolescent deaths from cars (OR alcohol)!

Not trying to come across as "holier-than-though." Only replying because you asked. Count me in the minority. I somehow managed to enjoy my high-school and college years without the influence of alcohol.

I spent my college years looking after my brother that enjoyed a few too many on a few too many occasions. My mission was to make sure he made it home safely. And while I was at it, I managed to win a nice sum of money of the drunk guys at the pool hall we frequented.

I didn't either, because I knew my parents would kick my ass if they found out I did. College is a different story though....

Some of the worst alcohol-related incidents have happened in frat houses where nobody was driving anywhere. I've known two people who've gotten stomach pumps and have heard of much worse stories without even involving a car.

Part of the point is to keep things from turning into frat house level stuff.

I had a friend in high school, and we'd go over to his place and get drunk. When his parents were home, we'd drink respectfully and not be jackasses. When they were gone we'd funnel beers and vomit all over the back yard. Adult supervision is an active deterrent for jackassery. That's half the point.

Well sir, that's great. I'd love it if my kids turned out like you. But I'm certainly not counting on it, as you noted yourself, you're in the minority.

Agreed, with one problem. In Europe, they've got mass transit so you don't have to drive. I mean hell, while we're pissing up a rope I'd like to just have a legitimate nationwide mass transit system and do away with drunk driving entirely. I drink at home mostly, not because I don't like bars, but because I don't drive drunk.

From a legal perspective you'd be a serious idiot to let kids drink at your house under social host laws. Even if you beat the rap on the criminal side (or just faced a fine like some states) with a higher burden of proof, the civil law with a preponderance standard would surely get you and not only will you be guilty of poor judgment/parenting but be indemnified for millions for personal injury/wrongful death.

???

Do none of you have highschool aged kids? Or realize how hard police have to justify their employment, so run around arresting teenagers for drinking beer (God forbid, because if you drink beer before you are 21 you will die)? If you think he should have been arrested, you are an idiot. Had his parents woken up and forced to come pick his drunk ass up so they can get pissed off at him? Definitely. But to pretend like anything criminal was going on is just insane.

I just don't see how anyone could actually think this is a big deal.
I did, and she damn sure knew better than to do something like this. Nothing criminial but embarassing to his parents and family and to Georgia Tech. Absolutely no excuse for this other than stupidity and utter disregard for how those close to him might be hurt.

For going to a party?

Getting techincal here, but this isnt the only reason. In Germany at least, when I was there, it was rediculously expensive to get a licensce. Every kid had to take this super expensive driving course, insurance was through the roof, etc. While they had to ride mass transit, it wasnt always because it was accessable - it was because it was their only option. It was too expensive for most to afford to do otherwise. It's cheap in the US...

Is anyone in the Tech fan base actually embarrassed by this?

Yes. Getting arrested is never good, whether you think the law is right or not. This will also be the first time a lot of people hear about him probably, so that is not a good first impression.

i agree it is embarassing that we have always laughed at the mutts for having their kids get in trouble and recruiting thugs... and now we have a guy show up in the news for this... I mean I am not trying to say this was any better or worse than any other thing I am just saying it is bad to be in the news for something stupid that we have no control over... I do not think that the AJC should have ran this article because Jaybo is not even enrolled yet.

I guess that's what everyone gets for doing a bad job of making fun of other schools' players.

I'm with you!!!! SHEEEEESH!! Drives me nuts with us making fun of other schools' players. Some people must feel it's there purpose in life to point fingers. Always comes back.

Everyone can feel free to let it rip when players are caught for armed robbery. THAT's funny, and thuggish.

Drinking underage isn't any kind of violent/badass/crazy, and getting arrested for boozing underage is hardly thuggish.

what worries me about this is that i thought the guy was supposed to be elusive

dual-threat and all, it seems like he maybe should be fast enough to get away and elude the captors before getting brought down

I know kids are gonna be kids, when i was in HS we all drank... looking back on it I think that it is ok in certain situations. Some of the time parents would let the kids come over to the house and drink only if the kids turned their car keys in to them and not get them back till the next morning. If this incident was a situation like that then i'm all for it.

This whole thread is dumb IMO. He got popped with a bunch of other kids because things got too loud. In the old days, the cops would have told them to be quiet and/or told everyone to go home. No big deal and no harm done. If it was my kid I would be more pissed at the cops than at him.

The cops did their job. I'm not pissed at them. I'm not pissed a Shaw either. He was drinking a couple of beers. That is what most kids in high school do.

You speed, you get a ticket. You drink at a house, you get a ticket (which is essentially what this is).

I still reserve the right to rip on the UGAg player that passed out on the toilet while taking a drunken grumpy.

Not for thuggishness, but because that story is still funny today.
