Jaybo Shaw

I think Jaybo did good last year considering his debut was merely a few months after his high school graduation. With that said though, I have higher expectations from him this year. Last year, it seemed like one bad play and he would dig himself a hole and have trouble regaining his composure. I expect him to be beyond great this year; be more confident running the offense and run it consistently.

No its not.

Stupid reply if you've never played the game and really dumbass reply if you have.

Apparently you have never been in that type of situation. If you've played college ball and never been nervous or intimidated then you must have been a helluva athlete.

I almost crapped on myself the last time I had to play against Howie Long and that was in my 7th year in the league. Yes, we still get nervous, intimidated and so on so your remark isn't very smart.

Actually it is his fault....when you're left hanging he has to make the decision to pitch or keep. He should have kept the ball. The decision was ridiculous. I like the kids toughness but let's face it ... it was Duke and MSU....he looked scared and intimidated against FSU...which is totally understandable.

Go look at that FSU play again. That was not an option play, it was a called pitch play. There was not decision to be made unless he just fell down on the ball Jaybo was to pitch the ball to Roddy (I think), but Everett Brown was too fast and hit him as he was just about to pitch it. I know on some of those plays, we INTENTIONALLY let the DE come free and if you look at some of the other plays in the game, we let Brown come unblocked at times. Maybe Jaybo was not fast enough on the pitch or maybe Brown was supposed to be blocked on that particular play. I do not know.

Jaybo Shaw is a very good QB. He is not as athletic as many option QB's, but he has a firm grasp on the offense and how to execute it.

I seriously doubt any of the true freshmen coming in, while great talents, will challenge Shaw for the #2 role this year. The QB job in PJ's offense takes some time to learn and even longer to "learn to execute". Repetitions are key in the learning process and unfortunately, the rookies will not get many before 2009 begins.

Both Nesbitt and Shaw will be much improved in 2009! These guys will lead the offense.

BTW --- If you ever get tired of Mr. Shaw, I know a lot of fans in south GA (GSU) who would love to have the PJ Spread Triple-O offense and Jaybo on their team ..... We can have fantasies .... Can't we???

He is no Jayson Foster, but with that said, Jayson was alot smaller and faster but still could take some really big hits. Jayson won the Walter Payton award for the best offensive player in D-I FCS his senior year, but his sophmore year when he started and fumbled the ball a bunch of times against Wofford and we lost the game, many fans were calling for someone else. He stuck with it and became only the second player in GSU history to win that award (Adrian Peterson).

Ahh, thanks for setting me straight. I feel like a tv broadcaster now - say dumb things and get slapped down by somebody who has played the game.

True, for whatever faults he might of done on that play, the choice to pitch wasn't one of them. It was the called pitch play where the a-back motions from the non-play side before the snap and gets the ball pitched to him. It's the same one Cox scored on earlier in the game. Also, if the DE was unblocked then someone screwed up, because to my knowledge we only leave a player unblocked when he is the key to an option choice.

From my perspective in the North endzone seats it looked like he didn't have much of a chance to even realize the DE was coming beforehand because of the motion made for the pitch. Whether he could have done something or not depends on precisely where he was in the motion when he made the pitch.

Doesn't really matter though, because at this point we're one of 2 or 3 ACC schools with a backup that has actually played collegiate football. I'll take that any day.

Let's keep it real here.

Jaybo Shaw's contributions were greatly appreciated last year, but he was not a "very good QB". He was an average BACKUP, FRESHMAN QB at best (probably mediocre). Every QB can't be good. Some have to be bad, some have to be great, and some are just average.

I hope he progresses and make an impact at GT, but he will have to perform much better in coming years to see the field as much as he did last year (barring injury). It is OK to call a Spade a spade at times.

Jaybo did a great job for a freshman last year. He took us to victories in two games he started, held on against FSU and got us a much needed first down against UGA.

It wasn't always pretty but you just can't ask for any more for a freshman backup.

It seems like the D line just quits when Jaybo is in the game sometimes. I wonder if it's a snap cadence thing.

I'm sorry but "great" is too strong of a term for anything I saw Jaybo do last year. Maybe I am just a tough critic. Oh well.

Jaybo was a solid backup last year regardless of his age, but, when you take into account that he was a FR, I'd say he did very well as a backup. I think his success was due at least in part to his prior knowledge of an option-based O.

And, while I am no T.O. expert by any stretch and without looking at specific plays, to those complaining about calling his own number too much: Part of the beauty of the T.O. play is getting the isolation and taking what the defense gives you. I can just about guarantee you that the basic strategy for defenses against Tech with Shaw was and will be take away the dive and the pitch and hit the QB. Shaw was probably just running the O and taking what the defense gave him which is why he kept it so much. With Nesbitt, it gets a little more complex for the D.

He needs to bulk up no doubt.

Not sure how much physically he'll be able to improve. I'm guessing he'll always be a backup.

The guy played great against MSU and Duke; though, these were two easiest games on the schedule last year, so it's hard to comment on overall performance. There's no question that last year a) he was too small and b) he called his own number too often. He can overcome size with better decision making, which is reasonable to expect from an 18 year-old. I hear he's bigger, but this guy needs to put on another 20 lbs, and I don't know that he's been able to do that.

If your talking about from last year, I heard he did put on 20 lbs. I only remember cause he said he was having problems physically handling the season and lost 20 lbs by the end so he technically put on 40 lbs over the whole coarse of the spring.

He needs to bulk up no doubt.

This without a doubt the reason he kept the ball so much. I understand the frustration expressed by others about this but keep in mind he was making the right decisions. It just sucks that opposing defenses resort to that. I agree that he needs to bulk up and run less upright; that should go a long way. That or pass more.

I think Jaybo was uncomfortable with some of his pitches last year....THAT definitely caused some additional fumbles for him.

Ahh, thanks for setting me straight. I feel like a tv broadcaster now - say dumb things and get slapped down by somebody who has played the game.

Maybe I could have chosen my words more carefully but for the 16+ years of playing HS on up people have always assumed that we don't or shouldn't get nervous or intimidated in the game.

Hell, I fall into that trap with my 15 y/o as he gets ready to play in the Ga. Dome this year. Here I am telling him it's just another game when I know it's not and he does the same. Point is after the first snap of the game the majority of the jitters go away except if you're playing against the likes of Howie Long or a freshman like Jaybo playing against FSU.

My freshman year after the ass kicking I took from Reggie White in Tenn, I was still shaking in the locker room after the game.

I'm thankful to have a back up QB who can move the ball and give us a chance to win. Many teams don't have that luxury.

What is Jaybo's future? Who the hell knows? I think he's much more likely to get better than worse, and more likely to get bigger/stronger/and faster than the opposite.

My guess is that this likely improvement should be enough to earn him a spot in the three-deep during his GT career. In PJ's offense that means he's going to get meaningful minutes and make the other QBs work harder/compete for the job.

For these reasons, I feel Shaw is a valuable player for us. I'm glad we have him.
