Since late August, Arik Gilbert has been in and out of legal trouble, and now he faces his second burglary accusation.
The tight end for Nebraska was taken into custody on Friday for burglary and resisting arrest. Gilbert was arrested in Lumpkin County, Georgia, around 70 miles north of his hometown of Macon.
On the morning of August 29th, he was also taken into custody on burglary charges.
Before 2 a.m., police were called to a liquor and vape shop where he was suspected of robbing the store. After discovering a damaged glass door with heavy cement bits from the parking lot, police said they noticed Gilbert headed toward the exit while holding a suitcase.
The value of everything that was taken was around $1,700.
Head coach Matt Rhule said the 21-year-old sophomore was dealing with personal concerns during his first arrest.
Rhule said Gilbert had been pleased with his job in the spring and summer; he admitted that he had “some problems” during camp and was “trying to overcome them.”
The coach said they have an excellent crew trying to aid him, and last night was a setback. He said he’s sorry for his loss and is sure the business owner is also. But they’ll just have to figure out how to move forward.
Gilbert had spent the past two seasons at Georgia before transferring and becoming ineligible for NCAA play. He also spent a year playing football for LSU.
Gilbert was the 2019 Gatorade National Player of the Year and a five-star tight-end recruit.
During his first year of college football, he caught 35 passes for 368 yards and was chosen to the All-SEC Freshman Team at LSU. He moved to Georgia missed the 2020-21 season. Last year, he made three appearances for the Bulldogs in their title run.
