Jerrard Tarrant charged with RAPE

Don't tell that to the Duke lacrosse team. 24/7 media coverage means that guilt by association is a lot more like actual guilt than it used to be.
You mean the Duke lacrosse team that won the NCAA championship last year, or the ones that lost in the semis this year?

Houston pled guilty to consipiracy to distribute 92 lbs of pot.

He pled guilty to giving one dude another dude's phone number, and that doesn't get you kicked out of Tech, unless you've got dreadlocks and The Hill is scrambling for a scapegoat.

I mean the ones who had their season cancelled, the coaches who were fired, and the the three who were actually accused of the rape who went through what I'm sure was absolute hell and only one of whom actually returned to Duke after the incident. Also, they didn't win the national championship last year. But what does that have to do with three people almost having their lives ruined and the rest having their lives majorly disrupted based solely on an accusation which turned out to be false? Yes, the NCAA did the best thing it could by going back and giving everyone an extra year of eligibility, but that doesn't change the fact that the NCAA(and much of the nation) completely jumped the gun on condemning Duke lacrosse.

I know it's been a year or two, but have you really forgotten the national spectacle that was the Duke lacrosse case?

Once upon a time Tech athletes seemed to be a cut above the rest when it came to character and behavior. I think it was more than perception, it was a reality related in no small measure to Dr. Homer Rice's effective and creative Total Person Concept. Tech athletes face the same pressures of any athletes, plus they are in the middle of a very enticing city and carry heavy academic pressure. Now, they also have a campus with more than enough attractive coeds for temptation. The Total Person Concept helped prepare Tech athletes for their future and gave them the tools needed to handle the pressures and temptations as a student athlete in Atlanta. It worked, and we received some very positive PR for it.

18-22 year old males will always make mistakes; some serious and some embarrasing. But, Mr. Tarrant's arrest combined with some of the other negative things that have happened rfecently to our SA's calls for a revival of the Total Person Concept. It is the right thing for Tech to do and DRad should get on top of this right now. If it keeps one athlete from drug addiction, alcohol abuse, or any kind of physical or sexual abuse it will be worth it.

My prayers are with Mr. Tarrant, the young woman involved, and for both families. I hope the truth will come out and justice served. Football is not very important in light of such serious charges for this young man.

Rape is a 10 yr mandatory minimum in GA. If he has to spend 10yrs in a GA prison his GT missed opportunity will be the least of his worries.

Allegedly, rape is the most UNREPORTED crime and also the most FALSELY reported crime.

Here is Charlotte one prosecutor handles ALL THE RAPES in Meck county. I tried a rape against her a few months ago and it was a very difficult trial.

I can tell you that if there is little evidence of force (vaginal tearing, ripped panties, bruises on arm, neck, or inner thighs) then the prosecutor will have their work cut out for them. AND EVEN IF they have some of that if these two kids were seen out earlier together drinking and etc. a good defense lawyer will have a decent chance of winning this case at trial. Reasonable doubt is lying all over the place in a "date" rape trial.

Of course I DON'T KNOW ANY of the facts of this case and I am just speculating.

I feel bad for everyone b/c this will probably be an ugly episode. Only the player and the alleged V know what really happened.
Interesting stuff law_bee. You should post more legal stuff.

"According to a nine-year study conducted by former Purdue sociologist Eugene J. Kanin, in over 40 percent of the cases reviewed, the complainants eventually admitted that no rape had occurred (Archives of Sexual Behavior, Vol. 23, No. 1, 1994). Kanin also studied rape allegations in two large Midwestern universities and found that 50 percent of the allegations were recanted by the accuser."

A Man in Full was the first thing I thought of after I heard of this. It is a very interesting book and deals with, among other things, a GT player accused of rape.

I have met Tarrant, it was after the Villa Rica v. Carrollton game his senior year (Fall 2006). I told him we were excited to have him at GT.

Although his name may be tarnished, and he may be guilty in some people's courts of public opinion, let's not forget that in our judicial system you are innocent until proven guilty.

while jt is facing the judicial system, the court of public opinion is what's facing GT athletics...

the sodomy charge is the one that i believe jt's going to have a problem with...rape could be difficult to prove especially if it's a case where she'd made a decision to get into the bed with him.

sodomy...bible belt...georgia law...guilty...sucks

Uh, you realize there's sodomy and then there's sodomy, right? I believe the GA law, and what rumors suggest is involved here is a bj. My guess is you'd have to search pretty hard to find many Tech SAs who haven't received one by this point in their lives.

Houston pled guilty to consipiracy to distribute 92 lbs of pot. Once you plead it is irrelevent what the evidence showed. Obviously he believed (through advice of counsel) there was a substantial risk of conviction at trial or he would not have pled.

or, as i remember being reported, he plead to get the whole thing over with prior to the draft, so that teams would know he wouldnt be in jail

justice is not always served, given our legal system

Wait a minute.

She gave him a blowjob and that's somehow rape? Or he ate her out against her will? Hard to believe oral sex isn't consensual, unless there's some serious bondage involved.

I'm not sure I've ever met a woman unwilling to have her twat licked.

Anybody got a link to the 'sodomy' bit in the news? This begs for clarification. If he did her in the pooper and when she didn't want to be done in the pooper he might be in bigger trouble than if it was oral.
