Johnson to retire

He wouldn't be my pick, but I think a lot of the Whisenhunt hate comes from irrationally associating him with Gailey, or dismissing his better years in Arizona as a result of Kurt Warner. Newsflash: You aren't going to be successful in the NFL without good QB play.

He has the Chargers offense playing pretty well right now.

Titans fan here. My skepticism of Whisenhunt has little to do with a Gailey connection.

There looks to be a plethora of Grad Transfer QB's available for next season. I say we shoot for someone that runs a pro style or spread who is relatively young and like to recruit. Kiffin or Kingsbury would be a good place to start. Doubt the Admin would touch Kiffin though.
Have you seen our OL? A grad transfer QB is not the missing piece we need to run a “pro style”

I remember his first season here as head coach in 2008, not knowing where in the hell the ball was most of the time. It was a shock from 2007's run left , run right, incomplete pass, punt offense of Gailey.

I honestly feel like I have lost a family member at this time.

Paul is a really good dude. I used to have a standing appointment with him, every week, and it usually just turned into me and him checking his stock portfolio and telling each other jokes.

I would not expect a good year next year no matter who is hired

We somehow land Lane and we 100% get Jalen

2008 - The Perfect Option

FWIW, I had been hoping to get CPJ after COL, but Navy snagged him first.

Briles oversaw a sexual assault ring and did nothing to stop it. Some say he even encouraged it by dismissing the accusations and covering them up. Huge difference between that and what Freeze was doing.
Briles also won while at Baylor. Huge difference between that and what Freeze was doing, too.

App State coach. Woody was the advanced guard.
IF (big if) it is true that the successor is already known, Satterfield would be a good bet. Would explain why UNC didn't pursue him harder, which was what everyone expected.

Whisenhunt makes sense given the AD connection.
I may not have my timeline correct but I think they played together. I know Whisenhunt is an incredible person. Even though he has not coached in college he would definitely be a great candidate. He worked his way from
Tight End to quarterback with limited physical gifts. I think he even played in the NFL. He would be a good recruiter and Godsey as OC would be fantastic.

My first takes:
- I'm as frustrated as the average fan with where we are, but I have an unabashed love for CPJ. Just disclosing my bias.
- CPJ's combo of (a) chip-on-his-shoulder personality + (b) differentiated offensive scheme to mask inferior raw talent is/was a perfect fit for our school. I mean, look at all of you unhappy know-it-alls.
- The 2014 Orange Bowl wasn't that long ago. Our most successful season since 1990. Only one better was 2010 Orange Bowl loss, also CPJ. That's a long time. I'd gladly take the losing seasons in exchange for those special years, as would about 85% of the programs out there. So yeah, I'm nervous.
- We have clear structural issues in the school (majors, curriculum, flexibility, priorities) and athletic department ($$, alumni/fan base, obligations) that are significant hurdles. My impression that CPJ has done damn well considering all those, and layer Bobinski's tenure on top of that... maybe I'm wrong?
- George Godsey sounds great - Young assistant, offensively-minded, beloved here and I'm sure our fan base would give him a longer leash to de-option the program than anyone else. But he's been in the NFL for 6 years. Just playing the odds, I'm not sure the NFL-to-college transition has been very successful for most. And I hate to say this, but does that hire sell season tickets?
- We have a major attendance problem. If we're going to improve as a program, that has to change, and a lot of it (not all) starts with the hire. I flew down for the Miami game this year and we had to have 20,000 empty seats. 10,000 seats x $50 avg net x 6 games = $3MM net a year. Woof.
- On the other hand, CPJ wasn't a spring chicken, he loves golf, and so it's not like he had another 15 years in him. Maybe he saw where we are, saw the resources and time needed to turn it around, and said might as well hand over the program to the right guy now.
- Right now, I feel a lot more like when O'Leary left than when Gailey was fired.

Fingers crossed.
Very good post! Thank you Coach Paul Johnson, I'ts been great to be a Yellow Jacket!
