Coach Brent Key has done a remarkable job with our football team! After GC and TS were finally fired, Coach Key took a team that was in turmoil and lead them to victories over a ranked PItt team (on the road), a very good Duke team, a VT team (on the road), and a ranked UNC team (on the road). He beat the Tarcheats with our 3rd and 4th string quarterbacks! UNC had only lost one time all year until Tech beat them. And then, Tech was down only 10-7 against the #1 team in the nation, on the road, at halftime. WHAT MORE PROOF DOES AD J. BATT NEED! Tech needs to hire Brent Key NOW!

Unfortunately, J. Batt and company have ignored what Brent Key accomplished. Maybe, they can wake up and hire Key before it's too late.

I respect Key for how he managed to flip the season outcome, it's been great to see the team playing with some fire again, particularly on defense. I would not be disappointed at all to hear him named the HC. But it's not a slam dunk easy decision hire. His resume is still pretty sparse and he's a gamble hire. He could be the next O'Leary, or he may not.

I'd love to see him be retained and have another seasoned HC come in to groom him a bit longer until they retire, if we picked up someone like Fritz. But as everyone here acknowledges, with the current shifting P5>P2 landscape, this is a pretty critical time in GT's history, we need someone that is a pretty safe bet to right the ship and get us competing, and maybe most importantly, gets the fans back into the stands.

Key is a gamble in a time when we need a sure thing.

I don't know that there are any sure things that don't cost $5-10M today, and even then, things can go south at a place like Tech. Football coaching is always a gamble. What Tech needs is to take a gamble and end up winning - like we did with CPJ. But that gamble was like drawing for a flush, not like an inside straight. Much higher probability of him working out given his track record. Still, going to option ball was a big risk and we ended up with a royal flush in that instance.

Key is 100% my coach as well and I'd be happy, if Chadwell and Fritz don't pan out first.

Asking earnestly: who are we going to be able to get that's a sure thing? Seems to me like all of our options are gambles.

I'm not sure anyone with P5 experience has even been mentioned other than BOB, who people seem to be very down on (but personally I wouldn't mind.)

I hope this is better than is OL Coaching thus far, and his UCF OC days Go Jackets!

Realistic options? That's the million dollar question where Batt has to earn his keep and then some. But of the options being floated around out there both Chadwell and Fritz have more bonafides as proven winners at the HC level than does Key. In that sense, they both seem like safer bets than Key, so I don't blame Batt taking stabs at them first.

But like I said, I wouldn't be disappointed with a Key hire and to see what happens. But he does need to be on a relatively short leash in years 1-2, get us back bowling, and reload the war chests just incase.

Yeah, I agree that Fritz at least would be a safer hire than Key. But there's no way I'd say any coach with 0 games of P5 coaching experience is a "sure thing".

We were gambling no matter what. Just a matter of degrees, and in what respect.

Well, if we're going to gamble, I guess let's gamble on the GT grad who atleast has shown he can get the team to play hard.

I think what upsets a lot of us is in the way this whole thing is just the powers that be screwing everything up. He's clearly our fourth option. Wisconsin is out there hitting home-run hires after a week of talks, and that's with a pretty solid and in-demand interim dude to fall back on. We look so dumb here. And if they look dumb to me, they'll definitely look dumb to job-seeking assistants and (especially) recruits.

Also, Key won't recruit quitters.
He better hit the transfer portal HARD. We need a lot of help that can come in and play asap or we will likely be 4-8 or worse again next year. Offensively we need a lot of players. Also, what offense will we run? This year we had to basically keep the Collins O. He has freedom now to bring in whatever type of offense he wants and to immediately go after players that fit.

We only look dumb to fans who live on Twitter and take every tweet as gospel. For everyone else, it just looks like we interviewed a bunch of candidates and then hired Key shortly after the season ended because he had the team playing well.

It also looks like we don't have a ton of money I suppose. Unfortunately that is true, and it was going to look like that no matter who we hired unless we wanted to dig ourselves even deeper into the hole we're standing in.

Got a Heisman qb walking around somewhere, he could probably come up with something.

Agreed! Now we can see if either can upgrade the talent offensively. The only position group I feel ok about was the RB's but we need help everywhere else. Even though I was surprised/delighted with the play of Gibson and maybe even the Clempsum transfer if he ever gained the coaches confidence to throw the ball.

Both of them played admirably but their success was more due to a couple of very good game plans that played to their strengths using a pretty limited set of plays.

I'd be disappointed if either of them is our main backup next season.
