Without the benefit of an offseason, Brent Key took over a team that had only won 10 of its previous 38 games, had only only won 7 of 26 ACC games. The team lost its starting QB in Key's 3rd game, lost its 2nd string QB in Key's 6th game, and played the final 2 games with its #3 and #4 QB's. And these were the results:
- Won 2 games versus ranked opponents. Since 2009, the only other GT teams to beat multiple ranked opponents are the 2009 and 2014 teams that won 11 games and went to the Orange Bowl.
- Posted a winning record (4-3) versus conference opponents. GT had a winning record in conference 6 of the previous 14 seasons.
If we had brought in a new coach mid-season (Chadwell, Sanders, or whoever) and they had gotten the same results, we would be talking about how great a turnaround it was and "Just wait to see what they can do if they have a whole offseason to prepare."
Let's compare to Chadwell:
- Chadwell is 3-6 against Power 5 opponents for his entire career (0-5 at Charleston Southern, 3-1 at Coastal Carolina) with all 3 wins coming against Kansas (2019-2021). Key has coached against 8 Power 5 opponents and has a 4-4 record.
- Chadwell is 2-5 against ranked opponents for his entire career (0-3 at Charleston Southern, 2-2 at Coastal Carolina) with both wins coming in 2020 against BYU and LA-Lafayette and the losses at Coastal Carolina coming to App St. and Liberty. Chadwell has never beaten a ranked, Power 5 opponent and has not coached against one at Coastal Carolina. Key is 2-1 versus ranked opponents, all of which were Power 5 teams.
- Chadwell is 7-14 versus winning FBS teams at Coastal Carolina with 5 of those wins coming in 2020 and did not beat a winning FBS team at Charleston Southern. Take away 2020 and Chadwell is 2-13 versus winning FBS teams. Key is 3-2 versus winning FBS teams.
- Chadwell led Coastal Carolina to the Sun Belt Championship in 2020 and they will play for the 2022 Sun Belt Championship versus Troy. Key has not coached a team to a conference championship, but has been a significant assistant on teams that have won National Championship, Conference Champions, and major bowl games.
- Chadwell won all of the National Coach of the Year Awards in 2020 as well as the Sun Belt Coach of the Year. Key has not won any coaching awards.
A lot of Chadwell's reputation is based on the 2020 season which was extremely impressive. The comparison is Chadwell's experience as a HC at a lower tier of football versus Key's experience as a significant assistant coach at bigger programs. I do not see much difference between the two resume wise. The interview would be the thing that would really set one apart from the other. I would not pay one significantly more than the other. If one requires $2 million more to sign and wants a big buyout, it makes the choice easy. Take the $2 million and hire a top flight OC or upgrade the recruiting budget.
