Apparently some Key fans think that the 23-point loss to Georgia is more reason to keep Key. Supposedly, we had a good game plan but the players just didn't make the plays they needed to to win the game.

The reason the players didn't make the plays they needed to win the game is coaching. Key is responsible for that. Or it is recruiting, which Key has also been responsible for as the associate head coach for the past 4 years.

A lot of teams played UGA close this year--much closer than we did. They aren't that great offensively and rely on their defense. They barely came back to beat Missouri, for example. Their game with Kent State was about as close as ours--I think they were also losing or within one score at the half.

At the end of the day, we have a losing record, and aren't going to a bowl because of Key's failure against a weak UVA team. No to Brent Key and this staff.

Chadwell lost to JMU by 40. Key lost by 23 to UGA. By your logic that makes Key and his staff the better option.

Talk about a false dichotomy. I just don't want Key or this staff. Whether Chadwell is the right guy is irrelevant.

But you are using the results of one game as evidence as to why Key isn't the right person. Why don't you evaluate him from what he started with and what he accomplished with it? Most people rational enough to do that can see that he was successful in his role as interim.

And rational people know that if he doesn't work out there will always be another coach available.

Sir, logic and rationality have no place here.

I don't get any of the chatter that going with Key would be us "not learning our lesson".

The lesson has been a painful exercise in attracting coaches with guaranteed money, and thus incentivizing failure so they can coast on the buyout to owning a few franchise restaurants and some real estate in retirement.

Pretty much the entire football world is recognizing Key's achievements this morning, and we can get him with no budget-crushing promises such that we could spend on the support staff. This would patently be Tech "learning its lesson".

Do you think Key can regularly recruit in the top 35 in recruiting and transfer portal. Do you think he will have the team motivated and prepared week to week to play sound football. Do you think he will be given the funding to target good staff hires and building out proper anayltical staffing and OC if necessary.

I can say 2 out of 3 I believe he will be able to do and think we would be able to regularly stay in the top 5 of ACC

That is more likely when you only have 8 games. In terms of "evaluate from what he started with", that is also a subjective discussion. What would the team of been with just some random average coach to start the year? 3 wins, 6 wins, the same 5-7?

If we don’t hire Key as HC….nobody else is.
You type with such certainty but you don’t know squat. Based on your “certainty” you insult others constantly. It’s really tiresome.

This thing can go any of about 5 different ways. For all we know, Chadwell may have been first choice but declined or priced himself out of the equation. Key may have actually declined already. I don’t know and nor do you. It may be that BOB and Fritz are the only ones left. Nobody here has an inside line on things.

Of the guys mentioned, all could do a good job or all could flop badly. None of us know, but one of them will be chosen to lead the Jackets. We need to support whoever that is, not whine and insult one another.

We started in a deficit under Collins this season. We have seen for 3 seasons a team week to week who would make tons of self inflicted wounds play unprepared to step out and grind. I think if your started back in Spring and factoring in the same QB injuries in season then a "Average" coach maybe get us 4-6 wins... Now I think a full off-season without Collins meddling Key maybe is on high end of that with 6-7 wins.

We had 10 penalities against Clemson several of them killed our drives and we rolled out that Kelly as our kicker geez... A cleaner game no horrible easy punt blocks keeps us closer and a chance foe upset

UCF is 100% a win if we take in the account all the details above.

We probably still lose to Ole Miss but we still look like a much more comptent team and dont know if FSU or Miami end up being similar results.

Wait… we’re not going to a bowl because of Key? What?
Key is the only reason a bowl was ever a possibility for this team.

For what it's worth ( and I think it is worth a LOT): No other coach will understand Georgia Tech and Georgia Tech football better than Brent Key. From the Institute on down, he has skins in what it takes to get it done, traditions, trials, tribulations, winning with less against insurmountable odds, everything. You can't get that from anybody else.

Without the benefit of an offseason, Brent Key took over a team that had only won 10 of its previous 38 games, had only only won 7 of 26 ACC games. The team lost its starting QB in Key's 3rd game, lost its 2nd string QB in Key's 6th game, and played the final 2 games with its #3 and #4 QB's. And these were the results:

- Won 2 games versus ranked opponents. Since 2009, the only other GT teams to beat multiple ranked opponents are the 2009 and 2014 teams that won 11 games and went to the Orange Bowl.

- Posted a winning record (4-3) versus conference opponents. GT had a winning record in conference 6 of the previous 14 seasons.

If we had brought in a new coach mid-season (Chadwell, Sanders, or whoever) and they had gotten the same results, we would be talking about how great a turnaround it was and "Just wait to see what they can do if they have a whole offseason to prepare."

Let's compare to Chadwell:

- Chadwell is 3-6 against Power 5 opponents for his entire career (0-5 at Charleston Southern, 3-1 at Coastal Carolina) with all 3 wins coming against Kansas (2019-2021). Key has coached against 8 Power 5 opponents and has a 4-4 record.

- Chadwell is 2-5 against ranked opponents for his entire career (0-3 at Charleston Southern, 2-2 at Coastal Carolina) with both wins coming in 2020 against BYU and LA-Lafayette and the losses at Coastal Carolina coming to App St. and Liberty. Chadwell has never beaten a ranked, Power 5 opponent and has not coached against one at Coastal Carolina. Key is 2-1 versus ranked opponents, all of which were Power 5 teams.

- Chadwell is 7-14 versus winning FBS teams at Coastal Carolina with 5 of those wins coming in 2020 and did not beat a winning FBS team at Charleston Southern. Take away 2020 and Chadwell is 2-13 versus winning FBS teams. Key is 3-2 versus winning FBS teams.

- Chadwell led Coastal Carolina to the Sun Belt Championship in 2020 and they will play for the 2022 Sun Belt Championship versus Troy. Key has not coached a team to a conference championship, but has been a significant assistant on teams that have won National Championship, Conference Champions, and major bowl games.

- Chadwell won all of the National Coach of the Year Awards in 2020 as well as the Sun Belt Coach of the Year. Key has not won any coaching awards.

A lot of Chadwell's reputation is based on the 2020 season which was extremely impressive. The comparison is Chadwell's experience as a HC at a lower tier of football versus Key's experience as a significant assistant coach at bigger programs. I do not see much difference between the two resume wise. The interview would be the thing that would really set one apart from the other. I would not pay one significantly more than the other. If one requires $2 million more to sign and wants a big buyout, it makes the choice easy. Take the $2 million and hire a top flight OC or upgrade the recruiting budget.

You're a lot different than the other jts

When has any coach of Tech football ever recruited consistently in the top 35? It’s an imaginary criterion. No one has done that.

Nebraska has an NIL collective in excess of $10M. Recruiting has become a new animal.

Everybody in the country is making hires. Our phone is going click...click...burrrrrrr..
Going to be a bad look if 3 days from now, our high percentage fellow is announced as the new coach. Silence ain't necessarily golden.

Coach Brent Key has done a remarkable job with our football team! After GC and TS were finally fired, Coach Key took a team that was in turmoil and lead them to victories over a ranked PItt team (on the road), a very good Duke team, a VT team (on the road), and a ranked UNC team (on the road). He beat the Tarcheats with our 3rd and 4th string quarterbacks! UNC had only lost one time all year until Tech beat them. And then, Tech was down only 10-7 against the #1 team in the nation, on the road, at halftime. WHAT MORE PROOF DOES AD J. BATT NEED! Tech needs to hire Brent Key NOW!

Unfortunately, J. Batt and company have ignored what Brent Key accomplished. Maybe, they can wake up and hire Key before it's too late.
