Key No Longer a HC Candidate

Dropping Key from the candidate list after this game is exactly as dumb as it was to move him to the top of the list after the Pitt game.

He was *never* at the top of the list for any but a tiny few, contingent on continued success, and it's definitely reasonable to drop him from the list now, or even after UVA. Audition over for this job.

NoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooCrap lol. He’s a loser that faked many out. Not as big a loser as Collins but….they hitched their wagons together from day one. Pack yo bags Key and call the moving trucks. Maybe Saban can resurrect your career.

He really needed to beat UVA at home and look competitive against the Noles on the road. Sadly, he accomplished neither. Judging by results, I don't see us winning another game, including VippieSue. I love his attitude and GT legacy and I wish him the best.

Of course, if he's ends up beating the mutts and they are undefeated and still ranked #1, we should build him a statue and name something after him.

You mean if he scores any points against the mutts.

People forget that GOL was no barnburner when he was interim. He brought the team together and definitely had things moving forward, but the record that year still wasn't great, and he had good talent to work with. He did enough though to earn the HC job, and he blossomed big time the following year. Key, and the entire team and fan base are all suffering from the cancer that was named Geoff Collins, and curing that cancer is not going to happen overnight. I am not saying that Key should be our next HC, but he is definitely changing the culture enough at least to be considered, barring a total obvious collapse between now and the end of the season.

The last 2 games resemble a total collapse.

Thanks, Coach Key. Good luck in your future endeavors.

The UVA game obviously did him no favors, but today, at least with Pyron FINALLY in there, we actually moved the ball and scored 2 TDs, one totally because of Pyron's determination. He could have been stubborn and stuck with Gibson, like Collins would have done, so at least give him credit for that.

A difference though is that O'leary was brought in the last year of the previous head coach and the same year he became interim, but was not here during the years of failures.. He also had been here previously for actual successes.

Not really trying to say anything about Key with this, just that it doesn't make sense to compare him to O'leary at all.

I am comparing the situation rather than the two men. Yes, we knew some of what GOL might do, and we haven't seen yet whether Key might do the same, but the fact that we have only seen Key under the influence of the Collins cancer, it's not really possible to compare them. But we do have some evidence of his abilities from his time at Bama, and that counts for something. One thing both GOL and Key have done is to bring the team together. That is an accomplishment in itself.

One hell of a recruiting effort. The problem is only partly coaching.
I guess Collins and current staff really suck at player evaluations. Since there are more 4 Stars than ever on the flats, and we even had a 5 Star transfer and this crappy product on the field is the result. Give a Program builder the same support and we might be able to right the ship that Collins and current staff have sunk.

Contrary to popular opinion, and especially Collins' opinion, the cupboard was not bare when he took over. A half-way decent coach could have taken the talent on hand and used them productively and built on that to improve results and recruiting. It was obvious that first game at Clemson that Collins didn't have a clue how to coach a game. He claimed to be a good recruiter, but he didn't have a clue how to coach that talent, totally squandering what he had, resulting in some leaving Tech, so that now the cupboard is probably as bare as it's ever been, aside from a few determined athletes who give everything they have to win.
