Key No Longer a HC Candidate

I guess Collins and current staff really suck at player evaluations. Since there are more 4 Stars than ever on the flats, and we even had a 5 Star transfer and this crappy product on the field is the result. Give a Program builder the same support and we might be able to right the ship that Collins and current staff have sunk.
Look no further than the kicker position. The previous guy had no clue at evaluating anything and used personal feelings and propaganda to justify his moves. But in sports the scoreboard doesn’t believe or disbelieve. It just is.

People forget that GOL was no barnburner when he was interim. He brought the team together and definitely had things moving forward, but the record that year still wasn't great, and he had good talent to work with. He did enough though to earn the HC job, and he blossomed big time the following year. Key, and the entire team and fan base are all suffering from the cancer that was named Geoff Collins, and curing that cancer is not going to happen overnight. I am not saying that Key should be our next HC, but he is definitely changing the culture enough at least to be considered, barring a total obvious collapse between now and the end of the season.

Anybody not named Geoff Collins could have been named interim and changed a couple of the retarded Collins era things. Better than Collins is not a bar to set for this team or this fanbase.

I love ya super but your gold tinted Tech man glasses are blinding you to the truth. Your argument would have merit if Key had not been a part of this horrible staff from day one. From day one. Look what he’s done. Created OL that could be placed in museums as realistic statues.

sa(t)an doesn’t want him. If he did, he could have easily outbid us for him.
I seldom if ever disagree with you, but I do on this. I doubt Saban would stand in the say of anyone with a new opportunity, especially when he can find replacements so easily. Plus, you might be able to argue that Bama seems to have been equally offensively potent both with and without Key. They were great with Key there and have remained good since Key left, although certainly not as potent last year and this.

The UVA game obviously did him no favors, but today, at least with Pyron FINALLY in there, we actually moved the ball and scored 2 TDs, one totally because of Pyron's determination. He could have been stubborn and stuck with Gibson, like Collins would have done, so at least give him credit for that.
You would give him credit for not making the dumbest coaching decision since Collins was fired? You are really really too kind.

Neither of us know how much input Key had in recruiting our current O-line. Like everything else with Collins, I doubt Key had much input at all. The first year transition was an obvious challenge in moving from the TO to whatever kind of offense Collins thought he was running. But the talent level now on the O-line seems to be at an all-time low, and that's not coaching; that's recruiting. Look, I didn't like Key as O-line coach, but, based on so many other things that Collins screwed up, I don't know now if Key is a good O-line coach or not. I think he is probably a lot better than what we have seen in games.

Well we do know actually. Rivals lists recruiter next to each recruit that signed. Brent’s name is next to all of them except one player.

Not playing Pyron
I'm not sure how much of that decision was on Long rather than Key, but as HC Key certainly deserves the blame. But go back a few weeks and ask why Collins didn't use either Pyron or Gibson when it was obvious we were going to lose to Clemson, Old Miss, and UCF. Hell, even Gibson might have been able to find his game (if he has one) in that time, and Pyron definitely would have been able to.

Lol. If Key wasn’t the primary point man on recruiting AND coaching the OL. Tech deserves his paid salary paid back in full. Yes Collins is the most inept coach I’ve ever seen in P5. But you are giving Key a pretty deluded scapegoat claiming Collins was suppressing Key’s greatness. That’s laughable.

But do we know how many of those he recruited were actually at the top of the list he was going after? Maybe he recruited others who turned Tech down.

So Brent Key had no input on the OL he was coaching and he had no input on which quarterback to play as a head coach. You’re right, he’s a victim not the responsible person. Let’s offer him the contract on Monday.

It would appear that Thacker and Long (although I am still not convinced about Long) were suppressing them. There is no reason not to think that Collins didn't suppress Key too. If Key could produce good lines at Bama, one would think he would at least be able to produce a decent line at Tech.
