Key Press Conference

Overall liked the presser but Key went long and all-in on the dominating UGA comment. That feels almost comical given how unrealistic it is. He won't be able to back it up unless Tech backs up the cash truck for football. And then, it will take many years. I don't see it happening. Not sure why he felt the need to box himself in like that other than pure emotion getting the best of him.
He did ask Cabrera for a billion dollars so there’s that.

When has that worked? Sincere question. When has a major college offense been based on changing scheme from year to year based on personnel and had success? This isn’t High School.

I would worry that would mean a coach doesn’t have a detailed idea of how to exploit various defensive tactics.

Off the top of my head:

New England Patriots
GT w Friedgen
Ole Miss

These offenses are all adaptable. Ole Miss was top 5 in the country rushing for a while this year.

I don't think he boxed himself in at all. We're playing U[sic]GA every year regardless. GT fans are going to obsess over it regardless. The media is going to write articles about it regardless. The problem doesn't go away just because we don't talk about it.

There has been a lot of talk on here about hiring CBK being settling for mediocrity, and Tech isn't committed to winning, certainly not at the level needed to compete with U[sic]GA. And if people on here are thinking that, there's no doubt that some high school coaches and players, and maybe even some players in our very own locker room, are thinking it too.

This answer put those questions to rest. We are not settling for mediocrity. We are committed to winning. We are not satisfied with being the little brother. It remains to be seen if we get there, but prospective and current players can be assured that is our goal. And I do think that makes a difference, both in team motivation and on the recruiting trail.

Great post. It makes a huge difference.

I remember watching the Collins intro presser and feeling “hopeful”. But then it was basically the same verbiage over and over again at any presser/radio show that guy did. Talk about a broken record.

Key’s presser makes me want to suit up and enlist. Nothing beats having an actual football coach here again. I think he’s going to be successful.

I'm OK with a couple years of 11-1 with the coaches and players feeling like the season was a failure because the loss was to the Dawgs. Then taking it to 12-0.

What question was that in response to?

That wasn't in an answer to a question. That was something he said in his remarks that he wanted to emphasize and wanted everybody to understand. The whole PC was great, but that is something I will listen to over and over again.

I felt like he was going to come thru StinGTalk and strangle me for my prior comments. He’s our coach, and he’s constantly mad as hell at someone or something.

I know I’ve given this hire a lot of grief, but Coach Key ain’t no clown. He acts just like I want a coach to act. Time for me to quit my bitching and get on board.
I’ve done this too.

If we set a goal of dominating uga and take positive steps toward accomplishing that goal (regardless of whether we ever get to the ultimate goal), we are going to stomp the öööö out of a lot of teams in the process.

If you take the time to go back and look at Tech during Coach Key’s playing career, you’ll understand why he is confident that, through hard work, Georgia Tech can become a winner once again.

1997 - 7-5 (5-3), 3rd in ACC, 25th final ranking
1998 - 10-2 (7-1), 1st (tie w FSU), 9th
1999 - 8-4 (5-3), 2nd, 20th
2000 - 9-3 (6-2), 2nd, 17th

Overall - 34-14 (23-9), top tier in conference, 4 top 25 finishes (1 top ten), four bowl games (2-2).

4-0 vs Clemson, Duke, Maryland
3-1 vs UNC, NCSt, WF, UGA

It would be great if the program could get back to this level.

The Key 180 on this board is nuts. 6 months ago, Key was universally hated (second only to the Clown). Now, he is our savior?

Was there a single positive reaction when he was named interim: https://stingtalk.com/board/threads/master-of-whispers-collins-gone-brent-ööööing-key-is-interim-are-you-ööööing-kidding-me.112494

So what is your suggestion? Rather than looking at the improvement after he took over, acknowledging that he's saying all the right things, and going into next season excited and with hope for the first time in years, we should assume that the improvement was a lucky abberation, write off his words as inconsequential BS, and go into next season miserable?

What type of life is that?

A life many GT-types seem to relish.
