Coaches believe the change from Johnson’s option offense to Collins’ pro-style scheme will appeal to a higher tier of prospects. Smith, at Cedar Grove, said that some recruits weren’t receptive to Johnson’s offense and their roles in it..

Interesting. For years, so many fans here and elsewhere argued vociferously that the scheme had no negative effect on recruiting, that it was all about The Hill and our academic restrictions.

It's more complicated than that. The academics do hurt recruiting, and it has been consistent through multiple coaching changes and schemes. The reason the CPJ offense has been a benefit to some tough academic programs is that it makes better use of the smarter, overlooked athletes and the athletes that fit better in that system. I think it makes logical sense that the system itself has a negative impact on recruitment of NFL-type prospects who don't want to be sidetracked in their career playing here. I am hopeful that a traditional scheme and CGC's recruiting efforts will improve the program, but I suspect we might end up with some slightly better athletes, improvements on defense, but a significantly less effective offense, and no real change in our W/L records.

Your offense doesn’t have to consistently score every drive if your defense is college level

CGC is defense minded

With me hope springs eternal. I’m looking for improvement on defense and on special teams, and the development of a passing game that will enhance the offense -not be a detriment to it.

Also, we complete in the ACC Coastal -it shouldn’t take much improvement to be competitive year-end-year-out and play in some ACCCG’s. Competing with Clemson and UGA will take some definite improvement -but let’s take it one step at a time for now.

I don’t remember anyone saying the scheme didn’t harm recruiting. But people said we didn’t need as highly ranked guys if they fit our system. For example, shorter OL who just aren’t going to get looks at the elite level.

That said, CGC can recruit. Even running the option, I would expect him to out recruit CPJ. Some guys just have it. Like James Franklin saying he wanted to see the assistant coach’s wives. Because an ugly guy with a hot wife knows how to sell.

I’m hoping we take over VT’s old spot. Winning the division more often than not and consistently ranked.

They say defense and special teams wins championships.

I don't think they ever say offensive yardage, fumbles, and chop block penalties win championships.

GT: 2002 - 2007

No ACC championships. No Orange Bowls. Great defense. Great special teams.

GT: 2008 - 2017

1 ACC championship. 2 Orange Bowls.
Shitty defense. Even worse special teams.

Nailed it, bro.

Great special teams.

...some say Pat Clark is still muffing punts and causing heart attacks to this very day...

No nailed it, bro.

If you can't see that the program has declined steadily since 2014, and CPJ couldn't do anything about it then you are blind.

2008- 2014 CPJ may have been able to, but 2018 CPJ looked exhausted and over it more often than not.

And it if weren't for a special kicker in 2014, that year wouldn't have been as memorable.

I was uncertain about CGC but he's proven that he isn't so fat anymore and that he's passionate about this. I'm hoping he's not an opportunist if things go well here since it was nice having a coach in CPJ knowing he was gonna stay on our terms. Guess we'll see. But his enthusiasm is really nice to see.

2016 was one of our best years as well. 2015 was just an injury tsunami. Basically, we were where we wanted to be with a great qb with CPJ. But it appeared that he couldn’t manufacture great qbs which meant down years because our ST and defense were consistently below average.

This is my take as well. CGC's enthusiasm, diplomacy, and personality is a stark contrast to CPJ's surly media interactions. Without seeing CPJ interacting with players and recruits, I can't say for certain that his personality has been bad for the program, but the new guy is definitely a more positive representative for the Institute. If CGC can just maintain the competitiveness, that's enough for me to embrace the change. I'm not convinced that any coach can take us to a new level.
