Marcus Wright a 5'7 170 lb. burner switches

Question:
San Antonio Reagan's Marcus Wright is the latest to stop a Southlake Carroll streak this season.
Following five straight seasons of Carroll quarterbacks taking top offensive honors in Class 5A, Wright finally wrested the award from the Dragons on Thursday in being chosen as player of the year.
Wright, who rushed for 3,374 yards and scored 45 touchdowns, is the first non-Carroll quarterback to win the award since Baytown Lee's Drew Tate in 2001.
Was that 3374 yards and 45 TDs in one year?

edit: see next post

Oh holy smokes. Look what I just googled: (regarding his 2006 season)

Marcus Wright – a Stellar Season

Your 2006 Reagan Rattlers were picked 7th in nine-team district 26-5A, and as such garnered little attention before the season. A 1-3 start kept Your Rattlers under the radar. During this time, the offensive line bore a lot of criticism, and the coaching staff made a switch at QB to a sophomore DB who wasn’t on the QB depth chart to begin the season.

All this time, junior running back Marcus Wright quietly carried the freight for the Rattler offense, grinding out his yards the hard way.

Then… the offensive line gelled… the shifty sophomore QB made plays on 3rd downs and kept defenses honest… the senior wide receivers became perhaps the best blocking trio of receivers in South Texas… and the production of the Rattler Offense exploded.

As the yardage and wins over the best football programs in the San Antonio area mounted, so did the spotlight shine brighter on Wright. It speaks volumes to his character and his upbringing (by mother Queen and now retired from the Army father Michael) that Marcus has remained what he has always been: quiet, humble, deflecting praise to his teammates and coaches. All of that praise, to Marcus and his teammates and his coaches, is well-deserved.

One only need look at this past Thursday’s article in the San Antonio Express News, “Guts behind the glory”. The story epitomized the team-first ethic embraced by head Coach David Wetzel and his staff, and ingrained in Your Rattlers.

Athletes in the spotlight at all levels, high school, college, and pro, are today prone to beat their chest and crow “Look at how unstoppable I am!!” to all who have a camera and/or a notepad.

Not at Reagan. Not Marcus Wright.

So, thanks goes to Coach Brad Harris’s offensive line: seniors Steve Wallace, Wes Alvey, Taylor Cotton, Matt Holloway, Pat Holloway, and Tim Kudla, juniors Pat Martinez and Sean Emadi. Thanks also goes to Coach Chans Chapman’s receivers: seniors Travis Tatsch, Matt Smith (former starting QB), and Mitch Rocheleau, as well as Coach Matt Carroll’s charges: sophomore QB Derrick Walls and the lead blocking of junior fullback Nathan Dawson. Thanks goes to Head Coach David Wetzel and his staff’s scouting, scheming, and ability to implement a game plan during the week and push the right buttons during the heat of ballgames.

All that said… Marcus Wright has taken his God-given physical gifts and through dedicated hard work and competitive fire has developed them further into something that is truly special. Few players in the state of Texas can do what he has done. He has earned the respect of coaches all over the state. (See David Flores' postgame article in Express News)

The improvement of Your 2006 Reagan Rattlers can be directly correlated with the game-by-game rushing statistics piled up by Marcus Wright… and the numbers in retrospect are staggering.

After watching his highlights, I find it hard to believe that he is "just" a two star recruit (or three, a la Rivals). Fast, shifty, good balance, runs through arm tackles, nose for the end zone. And the other articles are impressive...the ones about his character too.

Plus, he ran what looked like a shotgun spread-option type offense in HS. I know I saw at least two option plays that he took to the house.

For anyone questioning his talent:
-He has 26 straight hundred yard games
-He had 8 straight games with one run of 70 yards or more
-359 carries, 3374 yrds, 45 TD senior year
-8 playoff games, 2201 yards, 31 TD

And that is in Texas 5A - Which isn't exactly every other division.

NVM - beej got to it first

Final for career: 7,036 rushing yds (2nd all time in San Antonio), 86 TD. Set San Antonio regular season rushing record (2,293 on 239 carries) and full season rushing record (3,374 on 359 carries) in 2007. Had at least one run of 70 yards or longer in 8 straight games. In 8 career playoff games, rushed for 2,201 yds and 31 TD. See www.rattlersports.com, Fall Sports, Football for details.

Gawk.

The fact that he was invited to the US Army AA game by itself indicates he's better than a 2 star, for those who are guided by those rankings. Supposedly Rivals has him at 3 but I don't have an account on that site. Either way, I'm happy to have him as a Jacket. Plus the articles would indicate that the kid is a better person than football player which is amazing these days.

Height may be overrated, but not weight. 170 pounders can get squashed by 300 pound linemen that are nearly capable of catching them. Good luck to him.

Does anyone know why he committed to Tulsa that early?

If they are only nearly capable that means those 300lbs don't mean squat.

Correction

The fact that he was invited to the US Army AA game and is not going to Notre Dame by itself indicates he's better than a 2 star, for those who are guided by those rankings.

For those who have not seen this guys film, he's soooooooo fast!!!!! There are times when it looks like two guys have him and he just runs inbetween them untouched kind of like Vick in that Vikings game a couple of years back. You don't really get a sense of how shifty he is because he pretty much relies on his speed to outrun everyone.

The real question is whether he has any SWAGGER!!!!!!!!!!

Apparently you don't need a subscription to see his video on Rivals.com so check it out - it's linked from the GT Sports Blog if you can't find it otherwise.

One problem, Wright doesn't seem to have the ability to score from 20 yards in. ;)

The only problem is that you can only watch the video once, and only one of the four that are up if you don't have the subscription.

But I agree...can he make the short gain? I think he can...especially if it's 4th and 1 from our 20...
He'll get it into the end zone.

This thread makes me remember Bobby Dodd's great Pony Backfield. I remember Giles Smith and Johnny Gresham, but forget the name of the third back. Can anyone else remember it? I think his first name was Terry.
I believe it was Terry Haddock (sp?) May be wrong about that. Small and quick were those pony backfields of the early 60s.

He's going to be a slot back in our offense which will not require him to carry the ball up the middle.
