Michael Cunningham

I seem to be one only a few people that have ZERO problem with CPJ's attitude and answers in the the post-game presser. He took as much responsibility as he should. He was pissed and, therefore, acerbic in some responses. Grow up, people. He's not running for office.
I don't have a problem with how he answers questions, especially in a 4 minute interview . Really didn't matter what he said, folks would still be unhappy. Hell, if he came out jovial and smiling everyone would be mad at that.

And the real point - do those thinking the article written by this Cunningham guy has some salient points?

And more importantly, after watching for 10 + years, does anyone have any evidence that CPJ will do anything that will correct these too often outcomes and problems we have on the field?

The typical CPJ response has always been IIWII.

I think he's sure as hell going to try.

I wonder how many games since Butker left that we'd win if we had Butker.

He really should get his emotions more under control before doing the after game press conference. It is part of his job and reporters have their job to do. He was clearly aggravated with his team and with the referees after a disappointing loss. I get that, even appreciate that. But he gets paid well and handling the press is part of the job.

My son is offensive coordinator of his high school team. Due to injuries and a player who started at QB last year choosing to focus on baseball this fall, he is having to play his sixth string QB. After a bad loss Friday night a parent jumped him with a complaint that his kid practiced at WR all week and ended up playing slot most of the week. He stopped, and calmly responded that their slot got hurt early and that he put the son in the slot because he had confidence he knew the routes and could help with blocking. He was polite and patient. After the exchange I commended his reaction and he simply said, “It’s part of the job”. Coaches have a hard job. Parents, fans, press - all have unreasonable expectations and exaggerated sense of their own importance. Coaches are targets of abuse and get unreasonable blame. But, it is part of the job these days. And, some get paid a lot more than others for the job.

It was a 4 minute interview. Perhaps from here our you can hand him a sheet of his acceptable talking points as he's leaving the field.
None of that has anything to do with what we were talking about. As for my sense that I know best...

Blame the players, blame the refs, get snarky with media, rinse and repeat.
He does say, "We need to coach better" a lot. Been saying it since he got here. Wish he would never have to say that again.

Those guys you knew from Southern who love him... probably won NC's with him. Not as much fun to deal with the curmudgeon who doesn't win. When a team is losing, and the coach is pointing fingers at players who "don't care enough not to fumble"... it's a problem.

Well, when you go to three NCs and win two, the quarters and the semis in a five year span, things usually are pretty good. Remember too, he was coach of a team that was a favorite and undefeated going into the national championship game — and they fumbled seven times and lost. They had 13 fumbles in 14 games going into that NC. And had seven in one. Not a lot of people get to say they had a 15-0 record in college football in one season. PJ had that chance in 98.
I think the Navy guys who played for him in that 2-10 year like him too. And he really had to change that culture there. A lot.

In context the interview was pretty fair and civil both ways. PJ was spot on with several of his comments and KQ was great with his questions. I forgot about the dropped interception.

I honestly think putting TQ back in was not the issue. The defense had shown an adjustment to the speed option with Oliver and I think the magic was about used up with his 3 or 4 plays that he was capable of running. PJ should have just been honest and explained his logic instead of being snarky.
Ha! we all know that ain't PJ's style. He believes that "he" is the smart one and everyone who disagrees with him is stupid and don't know anything about football! Most of his fans think it's great when he belittles his detractors. He has never heard of "how to make friends & influence enemies".

Maybe you can show him how.

Correct.

His job is much more important than any political office.

He has not earned the right to have a Bobby Knight or Nick Saban attitude.

Not his job to be liked by players.

Yeah, right. How many meetings have you been in with him? Have you even talked to him in person? This is nothing like what people that actually know him say.

Actually that's similar to what I hear from people that spend a lot of time with him in the office. He's polite to donors and fans, but he's not the kind of 'people person' who just loves glad-handing. And he doesn't suffer fools gladly; when those fools are (perceived to be) his staff or players, he can be abrasive.

To be clear, I think CPJ's personality cuts both ways. When you're winning, people love someone who's 'plain spoken' and 'tells it like it is' and such. When things are going bad, that kind of personality has a tendency to get defensive and abrupt, which can lead to misinterpretation and tension.

Ain't nobody got a perfect personality, and CPJ's just a normal guy with his own particular personality. But there are definitely times when he could be more gracious... like all of us – we're just not under the microscope like he is.

It's just hard to understand on a board full of gracious people like this one.

Maybe the two ejections and a critical hold weren't the cause of the loss, but the certainly didn't help.

At least they got the chop block call out of the way early. Was Beamer nearby?

Who was the second ejection, didn't see that one.

David Curry was ejected by the replay official during an injury timeout.
That one was a weird one. They just announced "The prior play is under further review" and then kicked him out. I don't remember them making an initial targeting call

New rule. They now have the ability to find a targeting on review that wasn't called on the field.
