My take on GT vs. MIA

The team believes in the PJ's system, and PJ believes in his system. The last showing was not representative of the system. If I am a betting man, much like last year, if there was an off day for the offense, the next week they were back it.

I think the Offense get's back to it this week.

This is the first game since last year's FSU game that I am totally indifferent on. I don't know who will win. I suspect we will, but I also think that is the homer inside of me.

It's too early in the season to make an informed prediction of who will win.

I agree with this guy entirely.

I am not high on us for this game. Miami looks better then they did last year, our defensive line isn't three bulldozers and a tornado this year, our offense isn't running like we were last season yet, and I know that Miami has this game circled because we pants-ed them last year.

I still think we win, because I don't believe that Paul Johnson loses to Randy Shannon, but I am worried as hell.

This.

Our offense has not been as fluid as it was at the end of last year. I don't know if we get that turned around before this 3 games in 13 days stretch or not. If we do, we win big. If we don't, it'll be close.

I think we'll be clicking on all cylinders when UNC comes to town Sept 26th.

If you want to bust on Nesbitt's pass completion ration, blame some of the all or nothing play calling. PJ said that we needed to be better on 3rd down and more consistent, and not reliable on the big play... well most of our pass plays were low percentage shots downfield. PJ needs to look in the mirror on that one.

Don't call me a football expert, but I believe there are more passing options than one when a passing play is called. Nesbitt could have thrown to any of his other options, he consistently chose the downfield one.

Not sure how you correlate that to a bad play call by PJ.

I think attempting to pass on 2nd and long via a short pass play, long pass play, or any other kind of pass play is a bad idea. We haven't established our passing game, and 2nd and longs are not a good time to do it.

I would have liked to have seen more attempts to get our ground game established.

How does Miami's d-line compare to Clemson's? It seems like Ponder had all day to pass last week, does that translate to us being able to shape their line correctly for our option attack? That UM FSU game just looked like a big offensive game with not much defense (wide open passes). What should we expect?

Agree 100%. I'm not convinced of Miami's stellar offense. The only thing I got out of watching the Miami/FSU game was that neither team could run the ball, and neither could get pressure onto the QB. I don't think Miami's O-Line is that good, I just think FSU's D-Line wasn't getting pressure.

Of course, I am also not convinced our D-Line is better than FSU's...so here's hoping someone besides DMorgan can step up big time.

The fact is Miami doesn't like looking bad, and we made them look bad. They've had our game circled all year, and they've been practicing for our game all year. They will be ready and we better be ready too.

As someone posted in a thread last week, getting 'amped up' on defense to stop our offense, doesn't seem like the easiest thing to do.

It's hard for defenders to get pumped up about staying on their assignments and someone else making a stop. I imagine we will get at least 3~4 big plays simply because the environment and the 'desire to not repeat last year' will affect the defenders' heads in the wrong way.

I forgot to mention that Miami also fired Patrick Nix this summer. I am going to miss him.

I hope you are right, but I think watching more video and practicing against an offense similar to ours will help them. I hoped we'd know more about ourselves after Clemson but that was such a crazy game I don't know what to take from it.

This quote is why I like our chances.

Shannon said the focus will be on stopping the other backs instead of feature back Jonathan Dwyer, last year's Atlantic Coast Conference player of the year.

I think that most teams are the opposite and focus on stopping the dive and relying on their ends to stop the pitch. If they focus on spreading out to limit our pitches, then they better hope they have DT's the quality of Clemson's because Dwyer will bust loose if not.

Last season, when we played Miami, I think Shannon's defense scheme was simply to allow us to wear ourselves out running...

Actually, I think he planned something, although I'm not sure what it was. For a little while, that game was actually close. I think Paul Johnson then made the necessary adjustments and we steamrolled during the second quarter. Throw in the juggarnaught that was Patrick Nix, and you've got a recipe for a beatdown like we saw. I'm worried because A) Shannon should be smart enough to plan better and B) Patrick Nix is gone, although I hope his spirit haunts UM much like Reggie's haunts us. I still think that Paul Johnson is a lot smarter than Randy Shannon, and I still think we'll win, but we really need to limit our mistakes in this game more than any other. Miami is going to come out absolutely flying. I hope Harris regresses some against Wommack's schemes and I hope that Miami's players lose discipline and start defending the point of attack.

More importantly, I hope our team shows up to play and doesn't sit back on its haunches after the first quarter. Do that and a lot of the other misgivings for this game get reduced.

Not only is Nix gone, but his replacement, Lovett, was on UNC's defensive staff last year. How much will that factor?

Not too much I don't think. Clemson did a better job of truly stopping our offense then UNC did (IMO) so the UNC relation doesn't mean much to me. Watching Miami against FSU, there defensed looked to be operating about the same so it doesn't seem Lovett shook things up much.

Did anyone notice where our receivers' hands were when the 2 interceptions occurred? They had their hands near there knees, while the db caught the ball at its' highest point, just as everyone is taught. It was as if the receiver in each case had no idea of the proximity of the db to the ball.
