My take on GT vs. MIA

Not only is Nix gone, but his replacement, Lovett, was on UNC's defensive staff last year. How much will that factor?

I wasn't aware that Lovett replaced Nix as OFFENSIVE coordinator!:laugher:

And I agree with GTLiebs, I don't think the fact that Lovett was part of UNC's staff will affect us that much. Turnovers more than great UNC defense is what killed us in Carolina. Without some of those fumbles deep in our own territory and that game line might have been flipped.

You can use my name :(

Sorry. I wanted to respond to the post I did, and briefly scanned the posts below it to ensure someone hadn't said what I was going to say.

So I knew I saw it in my scan, but didn't remember the name.

It's fixed now. :)

Okay, that's it. No more posting at work. (Yeah, right.) Not sure what was happening in my mind. The point is, though, that the U's new defensive coordinator was on the UNC staff last year that achieved holding us to one TD.

Sigh.

I'm an idiot.
:bash:

Miami hired a defensive coach to replace the offensive coodinator?

Actually, Mark Whipple - boys that's a fun name to say - replaced Nix.

Here's something that truly scares me. I wish I didn't just read this. Please, if you don't want to be worried, stop reading now.

Mark Whipple, Miami's new OC was the coach of UMass in 1998. His team won the D-II championship that year. Guess who's Georgia Southern team they beat (55–43) for it...

I am not getting warm and fuzzies about this game.

That was Paul Johnson's first year as a head coach ever wasn't it?

In my defense, Nix did act as a sort of defensive coordinator for the opposing team. Nobody stopped Calvin like Nix did!

From the almighty wikipedia:

The next coach for the Eagles was Paul Johnson. Johnson found instant success taking the Eagles to the playoffs in his first season. He along with football legend Adrian Peterson reached the 1998 national championship. However, the Eagles lost the game to UMASS in inclement weather in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The Eagles rebounded under Johnson and won back to back national championships in 1999 and 2000. In 2001, Johnson left to become the head coach of Navy.
Here's to hoping for dry weather...

D'oh!

Hey Allen, my logic woke up and just realized something.
In what way could Whipple's (funny name indeed) win over PJ in the past affect the upcoming game? It's not like Whipple will go tell Lovett how to defend it (not if Lovett wants to keep either his job or his pride :D).

Southern thrashed UMass in the playoffs the next year; I remember watching both games.

I (and I'm sure a few others here) was at that game - before I went to Tech, I went to a lot of the GSU games with my dad. Southern lost the game that day for one reason only - turnovers (7 IIRC). Whipple and the UMass O had very little to do with it.

I would be much more concerned with the fact that his previous two jobs were as QB coach with the Steelers and offensive assistant coach with the Eagles. Both of those teams have pretty decent offenses, and I would think he is good at exploiting mismatches between their O and our D. Regardless, he seems to be a definite step up from our friend Pat Nix.

Still I think Tech wins a close one.

I was reviewing the MIA/FSU box score (I didn't see the game) and see that Miami scored 4 TDs in the 4th quarter.

So apparently, no lead is safe on these guys.

I do not believe, however, that Miami will stifle our running game the way Clemson did (I know we got lots of yards but we went 59 out of 60 minutes without mounting a serious threat on the ground). No way in God's green earth that happens two weeks in a row.

Not calling plays whatsoever is a step up over Nix. I am going to miss playing him.

I think our running game will get going, but I'm still worried. Last season, Miami basically quit in that football game against us. I hope they quit again, but I'm not counting on it. They know that they need to beat Tech. We've pulled four in a row on them, and last season was a debacle for that program. I wish that FSU had won, because we'd get a Miami team that was flat and broken, and I still hope there's some hangover and rust from that game. Our boys had better pull their heads out of their asses for this one.

Ive got a very sickening feeling about this game... our secondary wasnt exactly the rock we thought it would be agaisnt clempson.. for all his awesome punt returns, Tarrant seems very hit or miss in the secondary, he was out of position a few times(though when it mattered late in the game he masterfully deflected that deep ball to preserve our win) Cooper Taylor got gifted an interception but also got pantsed twice by Spiller,....Butler's interception was an underthrown ball, if Parker puts it out there, they probably get 7....dont remember who was over the top on that pass to ford when he broke out of double coverage to snag that one deep ball, but that was ugly

miami has a d-line that is comparable to clempson in size and im sure athleticism as well which does not bode well for getting dwyer going and a really good young safety in sean spence who will probably be on the pitchman, Nesbitt cannot beat this team by himself and we all are pretty sure by now that that will be the thUg gameplan....GT needs to sprinkle in more of the 5-7yd underneath passing plays to allen and jones to keep their linebackers and safetys honest instead of the 25yd sideline routes....the canes are gonna throw the whole game and if GT doesnt sic julian burnett on harris as a spy(which I think he is perfect for), he could slip out of the pocket and be running all day... harris's accuracy seems to have improved dramatically since we saw him last year... they are chomping at the bit to get us down there and if they get up on us they are gonna push for the blowout to make up for last year and swagger=being a dick...

That being said, here's hoping their over-eagerness leads to overpursuit and lack of accountability and we roll them up for a 5th straight year and come out of this 3 game mini-gauntlet 3-0... interesting note: GT and UM combine for 900 ypg at this point with GT and UM being 1 and 2 in ACC offense.. somethings gotta give

I'm not so sure. 2007, was conspicuously worse for scUM: Blue Turf Bowl, and they were routed by UVA in their final game in the Orange Bowl in pathetic fashion.

Now that I think about it, scUM has been in serious decline ever since their loss to Ohio State in the '02-'03 BCSNCG; and none of the indicators point to them rectifying the situation any time soon.

Who gives a rat's ass if they beat F$U? Hell UF has beaten F$U 5 years in a row now, and FCS JSU almost beat them the other day. Using F$U as a barometer for a team's prowess fails to take into account that F$U has been for the past several years a mediocre program being driven into the ground by a senile goon whilst hiding under the facade of past glories. For comparison, we beat F$U last season, just to lay an egg against UNC. This argument put forth by the media is just not compelling at all.

The whole college football world should want GT to win this Thursday, as it will hopefully put an end to this "Da U is back" nonsense.

The U did look good, but how much of that fire and execution was because they were playing their hated rival?? Many teams give that extra effort in that situation. Sure they have had more time to prepare for us.. but with the array of plays we have - we should keep them confused enough on D to get the win. May come down to a FG and S Blair has gotton a ton more confidence after last week.

I would think they'd be more fired up playing the #13 team at home that they've lost to 4 straight times.
