Navy head coach Ken Niumatololo will not return for 2023

Was he fired or did he retire or just decided to move on?

Navy has been mediocre or worse over the last 4 or 5 years and no longer have dominance over the other service academies. I think he was asked to leave if not "fired". Someone noted that since the DC was promoted to interim it would be a clue that they are likely to move away from the triple option. The end of an era perhaps.

The NCAA rule changes on blocking basically torpedoed PJ’s option scheme. Wonder if that’s why Ken was less successful in the past few years? Or do they apply to AAC?

Yes, of course the NCAA rules apply. The AAC is a mid-major FBS conference. (Or a “P6” conference, if you believe the BS that UCF tries to sell.). One of the teams got called on some kind of weird blindside block rule yesterday - the announcer was incredulous, like “is he just supposed to move out of his way and let him make the tackle?”

Some say I’m an ass for observing that the quality of play in the game yesterday was sub-par. I’ve gotta think the rules changes have something to do with that, maybe along with a drop in talent level? Navy looked more proficient than Army, but neither played well on offense at all. Maybe it is time for them to try something different.

remember that Army put up a million yards on UNC. They can compete but it’s still hard.

Navy will not be able to compete in AAC if they move away from option. They were horrible before CPJ arrived

When was that? They didn’t play them this year. Against Navy, Army had like 33 yards of offense at the half and finished with like 200 through 2OT. I guess the defenses were pretty strong, but man, both offenses looked as bad as we looked at the end of the CPJ era against top 10 teams.

I realize both coaches are CPJ disciples, but neither looked like they were running CPJ's offense FWIW. I didn't see a whole lot of option being run, more like design runs and QB keepers. I wasn't studying the game; but I don't remember either team trying a rocket toss for example, which CPJ used frequently when the D was crashing the middle.

Fun Fact: Georgia Tech beat Navy 70-7 the year before Paul Johnson was hired in Annapolis.

Johnson/Niumatololo has been a pretty amazing run. Have to wonder if it's just burnout.

If y’all watch that army navy game and then make a serious statement about wanting that offense back here then y’all are some dumb mothertruckers or you like watching paint dry. And before you utter more stupidity, the opposite of not wanting the option isn’t wanting Geoff Collins.

He suffered the same fate as Cremins. Seriously courted BYU, after that fell flat. Once you've half decided to move along, it's better to leave.
