Navy head coach Ken Niumatololo will not return for 2023

If y’all watch that army navy game and then make a serious statement about wanting that offense back here then y’all are some dumb mothertruckers or you like watching paint dry. And before you utter more stupidity, the opposite of not wanting the option isn’t wanting Geoff Collins.

I would argue that neither of those offenses are what we've ever had here; so it would be hard for them to come back. That said, I don't want the Triple Option or whatever they were calling yesterday here.

He suffered the same fate as Cremins. Seriously courted BYU, after that fell flat. Once you've half decided to move along, it's better to leave.
Didn't know about the previous BYU coaching possibility, but makes sense; I have a vague memory that he is Mormon.

I only saw a handful of option plays the entire game.

Navy will not be able to compete in AAC if they move away from option. They were horrible before CPJ arrived
Houston, UCF and Cincy are being replaced by FAU, Charlotte, UNT, UAB, Rice and UTSA.

The league is getting significantly worse.

The blocking rules are insane now and are tailored to make sure the major programs (UGAg, Bama, Ohio State, Clemson...) are able to dominate the line with their DL. #88 for UGAg now gets cut less. He's a superstar.

We got a penalty this season for an illegal block below the waist because our TE started just outside the tackle before the play. He slid inside and cut down the defensive lineman. We got 15 because he started the play outside the tackle. All he did was slide right when the play started and cut straight on. We got flagged. It was a perfectly legal play until recently.

It effectively took A-back cut blocking away inside. I'm not sure what effect it has on the edge. I don't know if cutting is still legal on an option play outside or not.

The rules were changed to give bigger and stronger players the advantage. Can't have your superstar future NFL player getting dinged up. He needs to be able to dominate any small back who dares to try to block him.

That shotgun RPO Navy was running looked a lot like what we ran the first 3 years under the clown. Except Navy was smart enough not to throw the ball to set up 2nd and 10.

I had a feeling CKN was going to get fired win or lose yesterday. Navy has not had quality duel threat qb's like Dobba and Reynolds in several years. Both those guys could make the reads, had speed and could throw some.

Since Malcom Perry, the Navy offense has turned into a qb designed run offense with some fullback runs and seldom used A backs. Very few read option plays, rocket toss, Counter option or lead
Option.

Im sad to say that the fantastic Paul
Jonson offense has probably seen its last days in college football. This is due to high school football being almost 100% spread, 7 on 7, continuing pussification of football, kids being soft, hard to recruit to either side of the ball because of it, huge negative perception of the 3O in the media and rule changes.

I realize both coaches are CPJ disciples, but neither looked like they were running CPJ's offense FWIW. I didn't see a whole lot of option being run, more like design runs and QB keepers. I wasn't studying the game; but I don't remember either team trying a rocket toss for example, which CPJ used frequently when the D was crashing the middle.

Yeah, I mentioned that in the game thread, that there didn’t seem to be a lot of actual option happening. Neither team looked like the CPJ-style option that we got used to seeing here. I was specifically thinking about the lack of a rocket toss-type play to get the ball to the outside quickly in that last Navy possession.

The CPJ stuff was a thing of beauty when it was working. Both offenses the other night were pretty rough.

to subject our future sailors and Marines to that is nothing short of treason.

Coach Ken seems to be essentially a figurehead to push 1 of 3 buttons after the departure of CPJ. The TO made him. I think Navy should replace him with Ivan Jasper, but that's just my 2 cents. Seems like those CPJ copycats aren't X's and O's enough to adjust the style of OL play to comply with the new blocking rules. I've seen successful TOs that don't utilize that blocking scheme..

Jeff Monken has been at Army 9 years now. It seems like yesterday. He is 64–49 at Army, which seems good.
6 of their 10 bowl game appearances too assuming they go this year. Granted it’s much easier to make a bowl game but they went to their first in the mid 80’s.

All of Monken's 9+ win seasons are really put into perspective by this 6 win season. I can't believe any school would retain their coach after a 6 win season. I wonder if they'll go bowling this year.

Yeah. 9 win seasons playing nobody.

It's going to be near impossible to find any coach willing to walk in there with NIL in place. Because of government restrictions, no player at a service academy can sign any NIL agreements.
"Their players are considered federal employees, and therefore can't have conflicting sources of income. So NIL is off the table."
