[radio crackle Do not engage. Repeat. Do not engage. Over]The decline in who from freshman year? Sims and Gibbs?
The defense… that’s who we were talking aboutThe decline in who from freshman year? Sims and Gibbs?
Just checking. If you're specifically talking about the DB's declining since their freshman year, there's no doubt about that. I don't think anybody's arguing that they haven't. We got rid of both secondary position coaches after the season. Maybe they were part of the problem. Time will tell. The defense… that’s who we were talking about
His defense was being carried by players that were already there, at Miss. St., UF, and Temple. Name some Collins recruits that ended up being big on defense.
So you think he thought everything was working yet fired 2 DB coaches, fired his OC, hired an OC capable of handling the offense alone to allow himself more time to focus on the defense. Ok. Sounds to me like he thought exactly what you said.Who’s the HEAD coach? You don’t think after seeing 3 years of regression he would have at least the slightest ounce of knowledge to think, “hm, maybe something isn’t working.”
The question is more, what WAS he thinking? We have no idea what what he was thinking other than going off what he said in his pressers - which was, wtte, "we fans didn't have a clue to just how great a team he was coaching and the great job they were doing". I think THAT has more to do with the animosity we are seeing from so many people. If Collins had just shown a little more 'ownership' to the crap that we were seeing on the filed and said something more along the lines, "I understand and quite frankly am embarassed that we are playing at this level and we're working hard to correct those things that are the problem areas" - IMHO, that would have soothed a lot of the anger we're seeing. So as to firing coaches, who knows what was said between him and TStan. Maybe TStan told him to find some scapegoats; wouldn't be the first time that's happened at Tech, see Hall and Jeff Guy. I hope and pray these new guys can turn things around. Collins just hasn't shown me any moves that has the program headed in a positive direction that I can hang my hat on. What kills me with this board is attacking anyone who has still an ounce of passion left in them to want better - meanwhile hundreds are leaving the program without so much of a word. That, my friends, is what we should be attacking. So you think he thought everything was working yet fired 2 DB coaches, fired his OC, hired an OC capable of handling the offense alone to allow himself more time to focus on the defense. A lot to unpack here. For starters, the press conferences, what he says to the media and fans and what he says to his team are two totally different things. It's been reported in other places that he is much more candid off the record but to the media all he is going to do is lift his players up and talk the program up. Does he do that to a fault? Probably. That has nothing to do with what he is doing to fix the problems or what he sees as problem areas with our team though. If you are going solely off what he says to the media and taking that as how he is internally coaching the team then sadly you are way off. And nobody is attacking people with passion for GT. Most everybody here has that or they wouldn't be wasting their time on a damn GT message board. People here are attacking other people that are constantly negative to the coaches, staff, players, etc. Being that way does absolutely no good. If you have the opinion that he sucks and will never turn it around or be a good HC anywhere. Guess what? He's still our coach right now and constantly bashing him won't do a bit of good, so maybe use that energy to support the team instead. It would be in everybody's best interest if he DID turn it around and turn out to be a good coach, because I can promise you that will be the quickest path for GT football to be relevant again. There is no cure-all hire that can be made and make everything sunshine and rainbows immediately, especially at a place like GT. If he doesn't turn things around, guess what? I along with most everybody here will be on board with cutting him loose and finding somebody else. That doesn't mean we can't support him now while he's still our coach though. And what if he does finally turn the corner this year? Are all the folks that have been bashing him going to admit they were wrong or start supporting him? Doubtful. And that's one of the biggest problems with our fan base. They pick favorites and if it's not their favorite, they don't support them. I support whoever is leading GT, top to bottom as well as all the student athletes. The question is more, what WAS he thinking? How many times do I have to say that Johnson sucked at recruiting? So if this your logic, what does that say about the talent on our defense the last 3 season?
It took him TOO long to think that tho. It should have been apparent a year earlier. I’ll give him a grace year, but other than that, he should have made chances after year 2.So you think he thought everything was working yet fired 2 DB coaches, fired his OC, hired an OC capable of handling the offense alone to allow himself more time to focus on the defense. I've got no real issue with what you've said with the exception that 'none of us really don't know for sure just how he handles coaching on the 'inside'. All I can do is go off what he says publicly and what I see. I do know that if you're getting your backside handed to you in football, you don't spend stupid time playing kickball. Look, I was a Collins fan at the hire - mainly due to the fact that several former players I spoke with were in his corner. Surely they would know what was best, no? I agree Tech is one hard place, not just to go to school, but in every manner. Friedgen even said so to me when he came back for an honorary day. He was getting the runaround from the AA. HE! He looked at me and said, "nothing ever changes around here does it?" (with a grin of course). So I know Collins has got to be dealing with that as well. But he lost me this year. Can he win me back? Sure, but it will take a while. Like I said above, I hope these new guys can breath some life into this program. Lord knows we need it.A lot to unpack here. So you have year 1 of a transition then year 2 is COVID year where every week you have a different set of players who can't practice or can't play due to protocols, your whole staff can't be as hands-on coaching as normal, yet you're supposed to have it all figured out at that point? It took him TOO long to think that tho. It should have been apparent a year earlier. I’ll give him a grace year, but other than that, he should have made chances after year 2.
You have completely missed his point, again, which seems to be a recurring theme with you. He isn't making the point that CPJ didn't recruit well or he's not saying you are defending CPJ's recruiting. He's simply stating the fact that in one breath you attest CGC's past success as a DC to him having talented rosters to work with, yet in the very next breath you don't acknowledge that the lack of talent at GT has any bearing on his failure to this point. You're making contradictions in your own argument. You are saying, "Oh he was only good there because he had good players," and saying, "Oh he sucks here because he's a crappy coach, nothing to do with players."How many times do I have to say that Johnson sucked at recruiting?
Covid year isn’t as serious as guys made it out to seem. I played through the covid year, and other than one week where I had to be quarantined because I was close to someone who had it, I was fine and doing normal drills and practices. I’m fact, our season was worse than D1 because we got shut down until the spring. So you have year 1 of a transition then year 2 is COVID year where every week you have a different set of players who can't practice or can't play due to protocols, your whole staff can't be as hands-on coaching as normal, yet you're supposed to have it all figured out at that point?
Yeah, that proves my point. He can’t build players, he can only take good players and make it looked like he did good. Look at Temple now, after 2 years of his recruiting and coaching. Not exactly a pristine program like they were when Rhule was in charge. You have completely missed his point, again, which seems to be a recurring theme with you. This is a flat out lie. It was extremely serious and difficult. Like I said, every week there were starters not able to practice because of protocols, then guys had to be tested prior to every game, and then some were declared ineligible due to a positive test, along with others that were in their position group, roommates, etc. Many guys had to do this numerous times during the season, not just once. There wasn't any limit on that early on. The protocols were much weaker by the spring.Covid year isn’t as serious as guys made it out to seem. Wow, you're more delusional than I thought. You ever heard the expression, "can't make chicken salad out of chicken öööö"? And you are seriously saying Collins' 2 years at Temple is why they aren't good now? That's about as big of a reach as I have ever seen. I guess CPJ is the reason we suck now by the same token.Yeah, that proves my point. He can’t build players, he can only take good players and make it looked like he did good. It’s just not a lie. We didn’t miss that much in our defense, and like I said, usually a guy is out for a week or two in camp and then they return, most likely for the rest of the season. This is a flat out lie. It was extremely serious and difficult.
