Observations and Game Discussion

I was all for it going for it inside the 1 on fourth down. I would have flipped the sequence of the two plays tho - a lob to Jenkins on third down and if that didn't work, a sneak on fourth down. If you're inside the 1, you have to go for it. If you can't get two feet in two tries, well ...
You take your best runner and go behind your best blocker (OK, maybe not so much of an option given the state of our OL, but still, you gotta try)
and if you get stopped, they gotta go 99 yards and change.

If that had been from outside the 1 on third down and you get nothing, then I can see contemplating a field goal. but inside the 1?
I say go for the TD

We may not win another game this year, but I think we will at least eliminate pop warner type mistakes and look like a college football team.

I was OK will the call to go for it. I wasn’t a fan of the pass, but Sims can’t or won’t get the tough yards required. I don’t think another QB sneak would have worked. I don’t think Key has the confidence in the OL to get the push required for a running back into the line. So a lob pass to a tall WR had potential. Unfortunately Sims isn’t very good at that.

First reaction is that our team does have enough talent to compete when they want too and they finally wanted too. Collins just didn't have it. What a shame and waste of 3+ years. Defensive strategy tried to give it away at the end. We were just running around at random with no pressure watching the receivers catch balls. That has to be fixed this week. Our lines are a weak link but they played better I think.
Their last touchdown pissed me off. Our prevent D is awful. What was it, rushing three and zone coverage? It looked like we had a guy sitting in the middle of the end zone by himself on the pass.

Normally I am all for going for it on fourth and short, and I'm still okay with the decision, but I do think in this particular situation you have to consider how valuable it is to go up by two touchdowns (and a 2pc.)

I also feel like kicking the field goal there was a much higher percentage than the fade, especially with Sims throwing it. That's what I would have done.

I agree but, i prefer under center QB for 1 yard or less

Dontae, more than likely, did not play because he took to social media to criticize or question the firing of Collins. Many younger people these days think they are in charge and throw tantrums if they don't get their way. Key will have to change the "culture" back to one of toughness and discipline for continued success. DS could have been out for other reasons but he did have one carry. I'm speculating on this.

Wow, I didn't see that. I did see Hall being a better runner and breaking more tackles at the LOS than I normally see out of DS.

It's great to see the other team commit turnovers, penalties and bee the one looking clown coached.
Making field goals helps too.
solid game, looked prepared for a change.
given the coastal dumpster fire we cold be as good as anyone else.
THWG Go Jackets!

I thought Sims played harder this week, so that was good. However, he still scares me when he throws the ball. The near INTs were one thing. There were a few completions he made that weren’t on target, which prohibited the receiver from making a run after the catch. Sims was almost always off target.

For whatever reason, Sims is not good at throwing to spots on out routes. And he missed seeing open receivers a few times, with one particular one we had WR cutting to the back right corner and defender had gone the other way and he threw to shorter receiver and missed him.

Don’t think these things can be fixed in a game or two.

PTSD from playing behind whiff blocks does affect accuracy. Hopefully, that will improve with an improving line. Sims is an athlete who might also be great as a WR.

What does that mean? We literally couldnt get two feet in two tries. Our inability to get two feet in two tries is not determinitive to our ability to win the game, obviously. However decisions to give up three in the hand for seven in the bush do not make sense when you are up 12 and could be deterministic. We were probably a late breakaway run, individual effort from a dude that simply refused to lose, away from a 3 and out and then Pitt coming back and ripping our heart out and 24/7 second guessing of that decision, right?

I agree with the your last statement for sure, but really, we have a 6'7" receiver on a 6' guy. If Sims throws it like a jump ball instead of a Reggie pass out of bounds that no one can reach, I think it is a 70-30 he either comes down with the ball or gets the interference penalty. The PI would give us 4 more downs.

Sims still makes some easy passes look hard. I remember one where he rolled left and through behind a wide open receiver only about 8 yards downfield. I am 59 and could have made that pass. I just wish he was more consistent making the "easy" passes. But, it is easy for me to say, since I'm not getting hit constantly because of our swiss cheese O line. :)
Goal line fades connect less that 20% of the time. Very low percentage play; even lower if your QB has little touch.

Well, when you have a 6'7" guy on a very short guy, I think, if QB throws a good ball, the odds are probably a little better than that, and I would also like to see the odds of interference occurring.

With that said, I would have rather seen us power run the ball.

With a QB who can run I would like to see a run/pass option roll out with our receivers spaced out in the end zone.

The question then is if Key will hold Long and Weinke accountable to improve play and play calling.

I don't mind the throw to the 6'7" WR, however, I'd prefer a power formation and just win the LOS running it.

A Sims keeper to the outside after play fake to RB had a better chance of working on the goal line.

Yea, our qb doesn’t throw great balls. So not the best spot to gamble on 4th and 1. The NFL percentage is ~18%. Doubt that accounts for PI. Also, height is less of a critical factor than the WR ability to get quick separation.

Most NFL teams have abandoned the jump ball on the goal line in favor of back shoulder throws and pick routes.

Calvin was actually incredibly good at the goal line fade. +50% success in the NFL. There’s an article out there if you Google around.
