Odds Shark has KSU on top

This game seems like a terrible matchup.
Opponent from up the road with a few chips on their shoulders.
Option offense with tempo which only one is required to make it difficult on our defense.
Limited offensive drives available to overcome incompletions to open receivers.
A sandwich game between one of the worst losses, maybe the worst loss, in Georgia Tech history and playing Clemson. Oof.
We seem to enjoy proving that our improved roster talent doesn't mean we beat lesser teams.

That said, I'm wrong about predicting Georgia Tech football pretty often.

Nick Saban won 7 games after losing to ULM his first year. By this time he was running for his first national championship.

Here we are, worried we won't lose to Kennesaw State and that Clemson doesn't beat us more this year than they did last year (our worst loss in school history).

There is nothing redeeming about Collins. I don't know how many games he will win this year but I know it won't be enough to meet the proof of concept standard he has to meet.

He promised national titles, competing at an elite level. Is a loss to NIU and worrying about Kennesaw State either of those things? No!

I love GT. I feel like we all love GT on this board, obviously. But there's a decent probability we lose to KSU. And I love GT, but there's no way on God's green Earth we we cover 20. Christ, come on man.

Consider it scattered, smothered, and covered.

What's really sad is how good we'll feel, and how positive CGC will spin it, when we beat an FCS team that's (apparently) never even played a P5 team before.
Fans will not be satisfied by a narrow win over KSU. Anything short of completely dismantling them is failure.

So I assume our scout team will be running the triple option. Would love to see us run it, as I feel our running game is our strength.

I’d actually be surprised if we won for three reasons.

Firstly, nothing has changed since 2019 and we have already seen Geoff get beat by an FCS option team. Granted that was with CPJ’s players but the NIU loss didn’t really inspire much hope with the narrative that Geoff finally had *his* guys.

Secondly, to beat the option, you need to get a push and disrupt the play in the backfield. We had next to no push against NIU, which is terrifying frankly. So KSU’s plays will most likely develop pretty nicely and our defense will get caught flat footed.

Finally, we, apparently, still don’t have a kicker. With our sputtering offense, every point is going to matter, especially with KSU likely controlling the clock. We will have to score TD’s and won’t be able to rely on FG’s in case KSU stops us (outside the 10 yard line(?)). I don’t see our offense lighting up the scoreboard.

I’d love to be wrong but Geoff has shown me absolutely nothing that he can win this game, including scheming, superior talent or even basic home field advantage at this point. If our coaches get flummoxed by NIU trying out different packages against us, KSU’s option will blow their doors off.

As far as defending the option, I used to love to hear opposing coaches say that they had to play assignment football - someone taking the B-back, another the QB and a third the pitch man. Those folks tended to wait and react and were easy to block.

What disrupts the option offense is penetration and aggressiveness. Get in the lanes where they want to come down the line of scrimmage. Pinch fast on the QB and come up fast on the pitch man. Think of how a strong, penetrating player could disrupt us - much like Iowa in the Orange Bowl.

Is the DL capable of that? No sacks against NIU is worrying.

I really hope that Thacker and Collins are taking this seriously and working on how to handle up tempo. This is a must win game.

A few thoughts on KSU after watching them this spring and the one game so far this fall:

1. Their QB that was murdered over the summer was very good at running TO and had a decent arm. They were switching QBs in and out in their first game this fall and neither are as good as the other guy.

2. They spread the ball around. The B back, Glover, is efficient at around 4-5 ypc, but does not have break away speed. The starting QB, Murphy, led team in rushing in first game. They put up over 330 yards rushing and are really good at death marches. They run between the tackles and only pitch if they need to.

3. Passing game with their QB platoon isn't great. Murphy is not that accurate and had an INT in his 7 or 8 passing attempts.

4. Defense in their first game was ok, but not stifling. With exception of a long, busted run in the first game, they did a good job locking down the running game. They got an INT and didn't give up any big passing plays.

5. KSU's kickoff coverage is not good. They consistly gave up big returns in the first game. Field goal kicker is ok.
Overall their best feaure is the ability to sustain the slow, grinding death march.

Facebook reminded me that on this date in 2012 we played Presbyterian. I for the life of me do not remember ever playing that team

Some of y’all need to step away from the keyboard for a few days. You’re letting the loss Saturday and your emotions from it cloud your judgement (since when have fans ever been rational?). This is KSU we’re playing. Kennesaw State - not Kansas State. This team is garbage even by FCS standards. Tech is going to win. There should be no question about that. By how much and in what fashion is the only question.

Tech is going to kill them. All of them. And not just the men. The women too. And the children. Tech HATES them.

While I agree that GT will probably win this weekend, to say that KSU is garbage in the FCS is grossly ignorant. The program is still relatively young and in his 5 seasons, Coach Bo has collected 2 conference titles and has done well in FCS playoffs in the 3 years they got in. Yeah, they do play bigger cupcakes than NIU (e.g. Shorter and Reinhardt) but Coach Bo has built a solid program. Lots of FCS programs out there that have been around a lot longer have never sniffed the type of success that KSU has had in their short time.

KSU gave up 27 points to Dixie State last season. I never even knew about that school. Monmouth beat them 42-17. We should score at will against them and win just by getting a few stops on defense.

Just come out and beat down their defense for a bit. Then play with your fancy plays after getting a lead. I expect:
Gibbs: 150 yards rushing
Mason: 100 yards
Smith: 75 yards
Other RBs 100 between them

That's right, over 400 yards rushing Saturday.
