Maybe it's not! But your scenario's not right either, because the ball has to go 10 yards before the kicking team is allowed to possess it. Before that it's an illegal touching and possession to the other team at that spot, I think.

Actually as I think about it, I don't really see why you think it would be easier to catch the ball falling out of bounds than it is to recover it in bounds...?
