They are trying to pull your leg. You will go to the NW corner and they will point and laugh at you from the NE corner.

They did this to me once, then I realized I was the one in the wrong spot.

Bit of a bait & switch to announce this after people have bought tickets, as tailgating is part of the gameday experience. I imagine a few people are going to ask for refunds. Not a good look when we didn't even sell out 20%
