On to GA St

I don't know the specifics of football in terms of X's and O's, but to those that do- was FSU's QB really that bad or is it because the OL gave him fits? To me, it looked like he doesn't function under pressure well at all and/or couldn't get a read on our defense. I guess I'm kind of wondering where FSU stands overall - some would say we barely beat what is really an overrated 6-6,7-5 team but to me there are very marked improvements on defense and OL, so it can't be just that. It's not really possible to get a feel for the season based on the first game unless you're coached by The Clown, but to me it really does feel like we are trending in the right direction... Perhaps I'm still figuring out how to have faith in our team again

You guys must not have been paying attention the last 30 years.

GSU will be fired up, and looking to claim the best team in Atlanta title, and they believe they can do it.

We are coming off a huge win with everyone patting our backs.

If this doesn't spell trap, nothing does.

Buckle up, and I'd be betting GT wins, but doesn't cover.
That's my feeling from being a gt fan for 30 years.

These are all valid concerns, however one thing that is different from the past is that the head coach has also been a Tech fan for that long and has suffered through the pain of these things along with us. I think his efforts will be highly focused on exactly this.

To me, DJU performed to his average at his previous two stops. But we looked impressive in applying pressure.

The key is to get that translated to the players

It's most likely a mix of several things. FSU probably won't be as good as last year. I would guess, without diving into their schedule, they're an 8 or 9 win team. DJU is not Jordan Travis and can't play hero ball when things break down around him, but can be serviceable when he has playmakers to get the ball to. FSU's playmakers, though, are mostly unproven and/or haven't had time to mesh. FSU will probably end up being a pretty good team, and we got lucky in a way playing them in the first game.

All that being said, GT looks vastly improved. GT from last year probably doesn't win that game. The OL has improved upon what was already a solid unit. The defense is a step (which is usually all it takes) faster and tackles better. Haynes King appears to be protecting the ball more. Jamal Haynes looks to be a great back, with solid pieces behind him.

I'm not saying anything a hundred different pundits and ST posters haven't said already. It's one game. It was the first game of the season and overseas, but with the way the stats shook out, we win that game 9 out of 10 times. We caught a few breaks when DJU missed some throws and some fumbles bounced back to us. They caught more than a few breaks with their kicker, the obvious PI not being called, our receiver slipping on a wide open route, and the non-catch being reversed on shaky evidence. I saw a quote about knowing a team is going to win if, on an average play with no tricks, their OL/DL moved the line of scrimmage. That's what happened on Saturday. The GT OL and DL both moved the line of scrimmage consistently giving us space to work with and denying them space. That being said, maybe they gel by week 5 or 6. Hopefully GT continues to improve and fix the mistakes, and we end up being able to hang with anyone.

If we truly have a balanced team for the first time since Ross, we can start putting together solid seasons. O’Leary and Johnson didn’t have the luxury of an off game by the offense. Gailey could have a down day by the defense. That imbalance lead to the head scratching losses even during great seasons.

If Key has found his man on defense, we should be in a solid place.

The thing I have liked most about Key is his willingness to move away from coaches who are producing on the field. Sure, he’s made some good hires but he’s had some misses as well. What he hasn’t done is stick with a guy who is doing things right in practice, but failing on gameday. That is probably the most important quality in a head coach. Being able to balance giving coaches time to develop their plans and cutting loses when they aren’t producing where it matters.

No, he's the player who stepped up when we needed him against UGAg and left his guts out on the field after our prima donna 4* quit in the middle of a game
why we defending this guy? guarantee he in locker room right now talking trash about gt to get his team fired up to beat us.

From G State page
PANTHERS VS. POWER 5: This is Georgia State's 17th game against an opponent from the Power Four or Five conference and fourth vs. the ACC. The Panthers have also faced foes from the SEC, Big Ten, Big 12 and Pac 12.
> Most notably, the Panthers' 38-30 victory at Tennessee in the 2019 season opener is the program's only win over a Power Five team. In that game, Georgia State trailed 17-14 at the half but outscored the Vols 24-13 in the second half, sealing the win on a 22-yard touchdown run by QB Dan Ellington with five minutes left.
> GSU has also held second-half leads vs. North Carolina in 2022 (scored 25 straight points to take a 28-21 lead late in third quarter), at Auburn in 2021 (led 24-19 until the Tigers scored the go-ahead touchdown on a fourth-down play with 45 seconds left) and at No. 9 Wisconsin in 2016 (led 17-13 with under eight minutes left).
> Georgia State will host Vanderbilt on Sept. 14, giving the Panthers two games against Power 5 opponents for the third time in the last four years and the fifth time overall:

2013: West Virginia, Alabama
2014: Washington, Clemson
2021: North Carolina, Auburn
2022: South Carolina, North Carolina (home)
2024: Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt (home)

I can't think of someone better equipped to do that than Brent Key, you don't get a more authentic viewpoint on this exact subject than him, someone who has lived it first hand as a GT player, as a GT coach and as a GT fan. All the boxes are checked, he should have zero issues with buy in. Of course, he still has to do it and the team has to execute, but in his short tenure so far he's more than earned the benefit of the doubt from me. This is why I'm the least concerned about this as I have ever been in the past (it has usually been a point of frantic paranoia). It's also why I feel that this year will be our best shot in quite some time to win the last game of the regular season.

DJU didn’t play badly. They didn’t ask him to do much through the air, but when they did, he converted two 4th downs through the air on their final drive. He didn’t lose the game for them.

What lost them the game was their run blocking and run defense.

Interesting conversation:

They had me with "we're just happy we got your administration drunk enough to sign this". Also, I totally missed the part where Key did that to Thacker at the 7:30 ish mark. Wow. All in all an interesting conversation.

Ga St has the advantage of having Tech game film from week 0 to study. They have a new coach and QB, so we don't have as much information with which to prepare, but our staff knows Zach Gibson's weaknesses. State won the potato bowl last year, but lost their last 5 regular season games, giving up 42 points per game over that period. Didn't CPJ used to say a team improves the most from game 1 to game 2? I think we'll continue to emphasize the running game, but that reduces the number possessions/scoring opportunities, so it might be lower scoring and too close for comfort.

i say öööö it lets air it out our line should give king some more time than he had vs FSU and we have a stable of badass receivers.. lets open this bitch up

Georgia State isn’t Kansas from 2010. GSU is a program that has talent that just went 7-6. Coaching change or not, this is GSU’s Championship game, not the annual game with Georgia Southern. State has only had 1 losing year over the last 5 (4-8, 2022).

This game is no different than 2022 vs UVA, or last year vs BGSU. If GT comes out flat…..Enough said.

DJU made more plays than people (FSU fans) give him credit for. Converting 2 4th and longs when down 7 for example. His stats were not bad. 19/27 for 193 yards. He’s just not a mobile QB.

FSU is going to have their hands full Monday night. Castellanos is a very good dual threat QB (as we all saw last year). He’s now in the perfect system with Bill O’Brien calling plays. Would not surprise me to see BC win.
