The on-line movement is simply a continuation of dumbing down our education system that started in the late 60s for political reasons. Does anyone want to drive his family over a bridge designed by a late night tv on-line U commercial school, or one designed by someone who got out at GT ?
 
So basically Fields doesn't go to any actual classes, doesn't have to go on the campus, doesn't mingle or get to know any of
the regular students, just sits in his apartment or goes to practice? That's a pretty sad college experience.

Anyone else not seeing the tweet? I just see the bird logo. I've seen this on other posts too here lately. I'm using Chrome and it's been fine in the past with showing media from twitter, instagram etc. I do see it using IE. Maybe the forum software needs a patch or something.

What is the substantive difference between sitting in a lecture hall and watching the same lecture at home online? I’m genuinely curious why you think simply being online makes it dumbed down.

What's the difference between sitting at a desk in a lecture hall listening to a professor and sitting on your couch watching a video of that same professor? As long as you can accurately assess the student and avoid cheating, it's fine[1].

[1] Except in circumstances that require actual attendance and interaction, such as a lab, where the Socratic Method is used like in Law School, and where learning from the experience of other students is core to the experience like an MBA program.

You so right. So much better trying to learn calculus from a foreign grad student with an accent you cannot understand who cares more about his research than teaching.

Who is taking the tests in the lecture hall and who is taking the tests on-line ? Your answer will be very telling of your naivety.

OK. This argument is about cheating versus dumbing it down, so I can only assume you realize there is no real difference between the two.

Please explain how those examples relate to Fields' UNDERGRADUATE classes?

You're comparing Law School & Med School to generic Undergrad classes for a Soph in college
 
Wow. Not sure we are ready to play football at the online degree level.
 
Honestly, why don't we just make the football teams semi-pro? If they are only coming to campus for the games, then what is the point of acting like they are students?

Let them take online classes if they wish and work toward a degree but don't have any expectations they are actually there for the education.
 
Joe Burrows LSU quoted that he visited the student sections since he never has a class---all on line. How do you know if it is not a tutor doing the course on line?
