He's the longest tenured coach in the ACC (along with Cutcliffe), why shouldn't he speak his mind? Cutcliffe certainly gets what he wants.

There should be greater transparency in the schedule development process.

I have no remorse for the horrible things I yelled at him as he was jogging back to the locker room. I hate that guy more than Frank Beamer.

No way man. It gives Duke a chance to play real time against the option at game speed. Even if it's slower than against GT it's still better than Dukes scout team running it. CPJ has been doing this for over 30 years and has played Duke 10 or so times, not many surprises. This clearly benefits dukes and only marginally helps GT if at all.

Agree with you 100%. Just pointing out how refreshing it is to see a coach speak his mind in the age of PC.
 
I would bet PJ bitched about this behind closed doors for years before saying it in public. I hope this helps for next year's schedule. But scheduling can be the difference in a 9-3 or 7-5 year, and I'm happy to see PJ speak his mind.

This. It isn't like he just started popping off about this the second he arrived. Until now, remarks like his were relegated to StingTalk and its unending torrent of bigcry. No problems with him speaking up, öööö Tobacco Road.

On the other hand, in 2018 we will now almost certainly play 8 ACC opponents coming off of a bye.

Anyone want to do an analysis going back to 2008 and see how we fared in playing teams coming off a bye week vs. the rest of the conference?

We also had the 5th toughest set of opponents in the nation during that time frame (.633 winning percentage, 15/18 were bowl teams), and first in the ACC. GT and VT each played 18 conference opponents coming off a bye during that time frame. (BC - 4, UVA - 6)

Average Number of ACC Opponents Coming Off a Bye (2008 to 2017)
  1. GT = 1.8 (18)
  2. VT = 1.8 (18)
  3. FSU = 1.6 (16)
  4. Pitt = 1.4 (7 in five seasons)
  5. Clem = 1.2 (12)
  6. WF = 1.2 (12)
  7. Duke = 1.2 (12)
  8. Mia = 1.0 (10)
  9. UNC = 1.0 (10)
  10. NCSU = 0.8 (8)
  11. Syr = 0.8 (4 in five seasons)
  12. UVA = 0.6 (6)
  13. BC = 0.4 (4)
  14. UL = 0.25 (1 in four seasons)
A couple of points:
  • GT is the only school with at least one conference opponent coming off a bye every single year in that span.
  • GT's best seasons (2009, 2014) only had one opponent coming off a bye.
  • The Atlantic division averages 6.25 total per year, Coastal = 8.8
  • BC has had seven seasons where none of their ACC opponents came in off a bye (including the past five straight years). Really odd for a what has been a geographic outlier for the majority of that time.
  • Three times teams have faced four such opponents in a season (FSU & Pitt in 2014, Clemson in 2013).

I agree somewhat, but Duke will most certainly have to show tendencies in their game plan to defend option plays. It's not like Army is some pushover that they can just roll over with a vanilla game plan - they could easily lose even if they don't hold anything back. I suppose they could make a completely different game plan for us, but that doesn't seem smart when they had just spent a week-plus preparing a certain way.

Basically what I'm saying is it helps them, but it can help us too if our coaches are doing a good job scouting.
