Performance Review - Roof

Do you terminate Roof's employment?

I think the defense had to go on the field under an unacceptably high number of bad situations caused by special teams and offense.

If he had multiple years with top 10 defenses, your analogy would make sense. Roof hasn't put together a top 50 defense yet. I like the guy, but things completely fell apart the past couple weeks.

He just needs to get his players in place. I say give him one more year with some ultimatums. Like 'rush the ööööing QB' and 'stop the 10-yd cushions on WRs'.

CPJ doesn't give a öööö about defense and is a terrible recruiter of that side of the ball. Roof is at least an upgrade on the recruiting of D.

Ted Roof didn't score zero points against Duke in the second half. He didn't punt 7 times against UGA.

The entire team earned this season and the entire team deserves the blame.

Given our O and the limited number of possessions it allows, I consider anything under 17 pts a bad performance and anything over 24 a good performance.

That would make the O record 6-2-3 (With VT being a push for the O)

The D would be 3-5-3. (Again with VT counted as a win)

Needs to be a decision on Roof soon, with the early signing period coming up. Don't want our DC status to give commits pause.

Keep Him at least one more year.

However, I don't like the two minute performance right before halftime (or at the end of the game). To be fair, I also remember this problem under previous DCs where Tech scores with 2:30 or less and then the other team gets points.
It causes momentum to swing back the other way too many times right before half and at the end of the game flat out causes a loss.

Like I have said for several years, GONE. Pack it out. Way too soft of a D, only aggressive when the stars align. He is the Coach / teacher, if the players are not getting it, he recruited them and he teaches them. Then he is out.

Ted has had to scheme around the fact we haven't had a DL since he has been here this stint. He is at least partly to blame for our lack of DL; but probably not solely. There is only so much scheming you can do to coverup deficiencies in players as CPJ also found out this year on Offense. To have a top defense in the ACC you need to have at least one DLineman who is All-ACC, and at least one LB that is All-ACC, and one or two All-ACC types sprinkled in. We didn't have anyone on D this year with the measurables to be All-ACC no matter who was coaching them; maybe next year with Swilling/Swilling/Roof we will be closer. What we need next year more than a new DC is a new Gathers.

Talent doesn't explain getting embarrassed by Duke every year. Talent doesn't explain us playing decent defense for an entire half and then giving away 3-7 free points with pathetic prevent defense. Talent doesn't explain us giving Miami like 7 unchallenged bubble screens in a row to basically lose us the game.

We were better at times this year, but then we were horrible at others. He's gotta be out, and we gotta find somebody who will get after the QB. If the front 4 can't do it, you get creative. Period.

Paul Johnson doesn't have the luxury of bringing in DC number 4 considering that even a good hire would take too much time to get on track. PJ needs success next year or he is probably out. Roof stays whether he deserves it or not. The best we can hope is for some defensive assistants to be replaced.

The last 4 years:
2-12 in games where we scored less than 24 points on offense
9-6 in games where we scored 24-34 points on offense
15-4 in games where we scored more than 34 points on offense

Is there no way possible for GT to accept one or two JUCO DT's a year? I mean I understand the credits don't transfer part but they really only have to be at the school for about a year and a half. This is an area that could be fixed and pretty stupid not to try. The APR is excellent. It won't hurt anything if they don't graduate. If there is such things as exceptions in any for this one would make our LB and DE look a lot better I feel. After 3 to 5 years if any turn out game changers we will have a better pitch to hs players instead of them riding pine at Bama or ugag.

As for a performance review. Some guys were beat up and I really feel the secondary had some good pieces. I didn't see any improvement really. We looked good at times but when the game or half was on the line usually the other guys scored. Some were even bad breaks.

I have been back and forth on him, but I've seen enough. Let him go, but we gotta be willing and able to go 1 mil a year plus on a replacement.

I don't see any reason to think a fourth DC will do better than Roof. I keep him at least one more year.

Talent explains getting embarrassed by Duke every year because if you have a talent advantage then that doesn't happen but on very rare occasions. Talent explains playing decent defense an entire half because you schemed for a specific offense and when it switches to two minute drill your lack of talent gets exposed. Talent explains getting bubble screened because Mark Richt figures out how your scheming to cover up your talent deficiencies and picks you clean. We were better at times this season because we schemed well, we were horrible when the opposing offensive coordinator figured out what we were doing and exploited our weakness. If the front 4 can't do it, you scheme around it, once the opposition figures out your scheme you are toast. There are only so many things you can do scheme wise to cover up a lack of talent. CPJ is not the only offensive coordinator on the planet that can find a weakness in a defense.

It seems CPJ should be specific with Ted about changes he expects - specific things, not just a general “perform better “. Ted should weigh in on what he needs with regard to position coaches, personnel, etc. in other words, talk like grownups and see if this thing can still work. If so, keep Roof. If it can’t work, call it.
