Post SC State Game Discussion 9.9.2023

The North Avenue thing seemed well attended (especially considering the light crowd overall), but we’ll see how that holds up. I still think some of that stuff is better on the north end ultimately, since that’s where most people come from.

The band played at the Campanile and Library like usual. Not sure what they did next (we went over to the Tower tailgate), but they eventually marched up Techwood and played a little awkwardly at the corner of Techwood and North Ave, then marched back down Techwood to the stadium entrance. It was a little discombobulated, hopefully they’ll iron things out as the season progresses.

This is what I was afraid of when there was little mention of the band in the first announcements for the North Avenue move. There is simply no reason the band shouldn't be a highlight of the pregame festivities outside the stadium. It's one of the main differentiators from a random Falcons or Braves or United game.

Under the old pregame system, the band plays at the campanile like an hour and a half before KO. Then they play at the library, then march down to the stairs. The band is in the tunnel about 30 minutes before KO, and enters the field for pregame at 18 minutes (If I remember correctly). The band is not keeping people from getting into the stadium for Kickoff.
You misunderstood my point. It's not keeping people out of the stadium, but there are a lot of people that wait until that to go in. It's tough to get in, go to restroom, get something to eat if you like to do that before the game, etc. and be in your seat by kickoff. I've done it numerous times. Watch the band and go strait in, try to get something to eat, and make it to my seat just in time for kickoff. I still think that needs to be done earlier.

The last (as far as I know) band performance outside on Saturday was at 12:15 and lasted maybe 5 minutes.

With our current attendance, it’s hard to imagine it taking more than 15 minutes to get in the gate, pee, and get food. (No lines at the gate, toilet, or CFA on Saturday.) I like getting in a little earlier to watch warmups and stuff, but there are lot of disincentives for doing so (bad and punishingly loud music, hot af for day games) so I understand why some people wait until the last minute.

That seems to be his strategy. The play itself is going nowhere. But it could with proper execution, so I'd like to see them keep working at it.
The first 2 offensive plays of the game were that screen (or whatever you call it). They both totally failed. I only remember it being used one other time during the game, and incredibly he worked, although not for much yardage. I don't why it worked that one time, but not the others. I don't think it ever worked against L'ville, and I don't remember it ever working much at all in the past. I always sit there cursing the OC...LOL

I agree Faulkner is probably gone within a couple of years if he keeps his offense humming like it is now. Obviously, we can't keep him from pursuing a HC job if a school offers him one, but we can keep another school from poaching him as an OC.
Since he was apparently happy at UGA to be considered more of a consultant to Moncken than anything, after having been an OC at other schools prior to that, I'm not sure that he is actually wanting a HC coach job. Maybe if he succeeds at Tech, then he will be happy to remain in that position. One can hope anyway.

The message needs to be to line up for the player walk and follow them in. By time you get through security, get food, take a leak and get to seats, the team is dressed and warming up. You should be in your seat for that and the A/V should be coordinating with the band to create energy until kickoff.

Since my usual tailgate group did not get together Saturday, I went to the pre-game stuff for the first time ever. I was actually pleasantly surprised. Never having been to any of the pre-game activites at the north end of the stadium, I don't have anything to compare it with, but seeing all those tents on the Tower Green and all the people there was very cool. The downside, at least for me and those with me, was that each tent seemed to be reserved for specific groups, and I have no idea who those groups were except the one with a sign saying players and families. But at one of the other tents, I asked a guy getting food in the line there who could eat there. He said, he didn't know, but one of the people working there told him to come in and eat whatever he wanted. Based on that, I was happy to get a chick fil-a sandwich and some iced tea...LOL So does anyone know just who can get in the various tents, and how one can do so officially?

If it can generate a consistent 4-5 yards on 1st or 2nd down , then it would be helpful just for that. However, if it can do that it will force LB and DB to cheat to stop it and that opens up gaps elsewhere, gaps that can lead to huge gains. The alternative is to let us go down the field 5 yards at the time. It’s a great play if we can run it, but it takes lots of work to get the timing down. I’d like to see them keep trying.

YJA is like 2.5 hours before kickoff, the band would have to play through their entire stands tune library like 40 times to fill up that time. I would rather the band continue to direct people towards the stadium (Campanile -> Library -> Calaway) than go straight inside. Plus it is always weird to me when bands leave the stands during pregame just to line up and do their pregame and go back into the stands.
If we want more people in sooner, they should have reduced concession prices before kickoff or something. Or give the first 1000 people a koozie or whatever.

Those first two plays of the game, there was a defended standing face to face in front of the guy the ball was thrown to. There is no way that that could ever work like that. A real screen where the receiver/back sprints out after the snap is far more likely to be successful than that play. I am still not sure how it worked the one time that it did.

They supposedly gave free keychains or something like that on Saturday, but as usual, nothing was being given out at the North Ave gates to the stadium. It seems that if you don't enter through the north stands entrance, which you can't do if you are in the upper east, then you don't get anything. When they gave out the Calvin bobble-heads a few years ago, if they gave out any at the North Ave gates, they were long gone before I got there. I only managed to get one through the generosity of a friend who picked up 4 of them at the gate he entered. The people who arrange these things really don't have a clue.

Kyle Kennard named ACC defensive lineman of the week. Per the AJC: "Kennard had an interception, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery in the win over SC State becoming only the second Georgia Tech player since 2000 to pull off the rare trifecta in a single game joining Bruce Jordan-Swilling, who had all three at Virginia in 2017."
We need a few more on the DL just like him.

They were just wandering around in the crowd at the tailgate handing out little plastic keychains. They weren’t giving them out at the gates as far I saw.

I enter at Gate 9 (middle of the stadium on Techwood) and got a Calvin bobble head. *shrug*

According to the menu boards at the GT concessions in lower east, they do give a pre-kick discount on stuff. I think we started that a few years ago, maybe the Covid season.

I didn't see anybody handing them out, but I really didn't need one anyway.
It's been too far back for me to remember, but I usually walk past gate 9 on the way to my gate. They may have given the bobble-head Calvin's at the North Ave gate too, but not by the time I got there. The fact that one man was able to get 4 though tells me that don't really pay much attention to that. They COULD only give one person one item, whatever it is, and if he's with a group, give them to each individual in the group.

I picked up a keychain at one of the tents on North Ave. That was the only place I saw them before the game. We were tailgating in Upper Peters and it was quiet without the YJA/pregame sounds.

The GWG uniforms we wore yesterday look so good I don’t know why we’d ever want to wear anything else. It’s a top 5 college football uniform.
way better than gold unis for louiseville game. even my wife who has no idea what the correct shade of gold is asked why our unis looked so weird. i still cant believe institute lets adidas get away with worse looking unis than russell put out. but yes GWG sharp

Faulkner needs to be paid well for his services. He has made a world of difference already - from attracting talent (I don't think we get King, Lane, Blaylock, or Seither w/o him, TBH), to coaches, to system, to on-field performance.
Faulkner is auditioning for a head coaching job. The better he does, the more likely he lands a sweet HC deal. Same with Weinke

I suppose the reasoning is construction. I didn't care much for it on the street at north avenue. The band should be playing the stairs like they have been doing traditionally since 2004-ish. Wreck coming down the hill. All that jazz.

Ultimately, I hope we put a park/tailgating area in where Peter's Deck is. It would suck for those who park there so that would have to be addressed.
