So what does Patenaude need at quarterback to help get the offense rolling heading into the season opener at Florida State?
“That’s a great question. I think everybody who’s a Jacket fan is asking that question,” he said. “Can you get us in the right play? Can you check us the right way? Are you athletic enough to run it in the run game? Do you know where you’re going in the passing game? That’s all critical before the ball’s being snapped. Can you protect yourself? Can you change protections? So that’s one piece of it. And then when the ball is snapped, can you make a great decision on where to go with the ball, No. 1? Do you throw on target? And do you throw on target with velocity? Those are three things just from a throwing standpoint once the ball is snapped. So it’s gotta be a combination of all those type of things, and the guys have done a really good job.
“We have guys that can really play. It’s a little bit of a different situation. In a perfect scenario, we would have a guy, and he would get 75 percent of the reps, and we would be headed towards Tallahassee with one guy, but that’s not the case. It will be a continual work in progress. The plan is to not to have to play two, three or four guys. We’d love to be able to settle on one guy and have him have a tremendous year, but we’re going to give all those guys ample opportunity to figure it out.”
