Reggie Ball 2.0

And he's probably more talented than any QB we've had since Hamilton. The problem with Vad is he is not a football player. Some guys just don't fit in this game regardless of how well they look getting off the bus. He has no pocket presense, he rolls right into defensive players, he doesn't make anything positive out of plays that break down, the illegal forward pass play is a microcosm of Vads season. He was 3 yards past the LOS and there was atleast another 5 yards in front of him. The fumble was also ridiculous you could see him slow down and brace for impact.

Its hard to assign blame on things like Vad, he was highly touted and his film looked good. He can flip the ball 60 yards downfield in a tight spiral with ease, and I am sure that he looks great in practice.

QB recruiting has not been a problem, the issue has been translating that talent to the field and Days, Sims, and Vad simply have not done well on the field. Is this PJs fault, possibly, but each of those guys was a better QB prospect than Nick Marshal. I guess the question would be had we gotten Nick Marshall would he look as lousy as Vad, and if Vad was at Auburn would he look as good as Marshall

With that being said, he is only a redshirt sophmore and we were top 5 in the country in TOP, 3rd down conversion %, and rushing. I fully believe we are just 3-4 bad vad plays away from winning 10 or 11 games

enough drunken rambling

tl;dr version - Vad plays soft.

I disagree. I think he's not a triple option QB.

I think he'll be just fine when he gets to an offense where they don't try & run the ball almost all of the time. Passing the ball 12 times per game on average isn't helping you when you are a passing QB.

Johnson's offense is set up to run the ball and the offensive linemen are not adept at pass blocking because we don't practice it as much as we practice run blocking. And we certainly don't execute it in-game as much as we do the run.

If he goes to a place like Duke and gets the benefit of Cutcliffe's tutelage, he just might be a star.

Vad Lee throws the ball well when he is not throwing off his back foot. I have also seen him throw the ball well in practice on a roll out. I have often thought a pass/run option play would suit him well. Part of the problem on the option this year is the hesitation with the DE in his face. It was also a problem for Nesbitt and Washington in their first year running the option. Eventually, Nesbitt learned to tuck the ball and gain 5 yards or pitch the ball at contact. Washington would often fake the pitch and turn it up-field. The OL gets a lot of grief, but I have actually seen improvement. I did not see the plays getting destroyed in the backfield later in the season like I saw in the VPISU and Clemson games. However, the outside blocks and the pass blocking has hurt us. I see a lack of quickness and footwork to stop a fast DE or a blitzing LB. Not sure if that is ability or coaching or a combination of the two.

I still believe Vad Lee gives us more of a passing threat at QB than we've had since CPJ has been our coach. Think back to the TD pass to Waller in the bowl game. How many times in past seasons would that pass have been a fluttering, underthrown duck?

Did you guys not see Vad Lee on the very first snap of the bowl game proceeds to throw a simple swing pass literally 10 yards OVER the head of the WR? Literally threw a floater on a maybe 15 yard lateral pass.

He is not a great QB. He is not even a good QB at this point.

He wouldn't start at VT, Miami, Clemson, ect.

Vad Lee is not the problem. Vad Lee has plenty of strengths that our coaching staff has killed over time.

The offensive line is not the problem. The offensive line can only do what they are capable of, and we have all seen what that is exactly.

Paul Johnson is the problem.

These are his recruits (not Mike Sewak's), and this is his offense that he owns and manages as HC and OC, and it is his fault that our players are outmatched, unprepared, unmotivated, or poorly performing.

A good coach makes all the difference between a good group and a mediocre group. Ted Roof took a defense that was mediocre at best last year and has turned it into one of our best strengths. Sure he still has issues with up tempo offenses, but when you hold VT to 17 and Ole Miss to 25, you need to win those games. Paul Johnson doesn't do that for us.

PJ won't use Vad to his strengths, period. He has no offensive line to protect him, he has no position coach to improve his throwing mechanics, he won't let him throw high percentage passes, he doesn't get him in a rhythm, he only passes on obvious passing downs, he doesn't put him in shotgun enough, etc etc etc.

He sets his QB's up to fail, just like putting Justin in backed up inside or own 5 in the bowl game. He did that with Vad last year and he did it with Synjyn before he moved to AB.

There was no DE in his face when he threw that pass 3 yards past the line of scrimmage.

There was a cornerback bearing down on him and that was not an option play. It was a scramble out of the pocket.

If he'd a thrown it three steps sooner, back where the line of scrimmage was, he probably wouldn't have had anyone bearing down on him. If he'd a tucked it and run, he probably would have gotten another 7, which including the 3 he'd already got would put us at a first down.

I mean, it's not throwing it away on 4th down or anything, but still.

I will be glad when the Vad Lee experiment is over. If he is our starter next season we might not be bowl eligible. Justin Thomas not much of an upgrade. I hope Jordan has something, or maybe Byerly will man up and take the job from the "athletes".

This is crazy. Vad will either improve or stay the same, but he still won 7 games against a tough schedule. Next year the schedule eases a bit with no BYU.
