He had a pretty piss poor record overall in his coaching career it seems (per Wikipedia)... 93–128–4 or 41%, which is MY GOD IT’S 1% BETTER THAN KEN WHISENHUNT’S WIN PERCENTAGE!!

    Oh and he dumped us.

I’m not a huge Curry fan but he inherited a program that was near death.

I do not agree. Pepper Rogers had a better record than Curry. Curry had one good season in seven years.

I don't understand your post, but the prior poster's point was that Carroll was a mediocre pro coach who turned into a great college coach (and recruiter and cheater). And that is true.

As I noted in a recent long post, just a few weeks ago I heard Homer say that he left his head-coaching job in the NFL to come to Tech because Coach Dodd told him the administration was seriously considering taking GT down to a lower level of play. Homer wasn't doing great with the Bengals but Paul Brown didn't want him to go. It was Bobby Dodd's personal appeal to save GT football that brought him and Bill Curry here.

I thought you were old enough to remember how big a deal 1985 was...?

It is always refreshing to come on ST and read a good post.

There's nothing to disagree with. Curry took over the worst programm in Division I football. This is not in question - we were the absolute worst by far. Curry should get a medal for what his assistants Dwayne Painter and Don Lindsay accomplished.

When he took over USC he'd been out of the college game for about as long as Whisenhunt has been now.

Yes we did hear Satterfield linked to lousiville before his hiring. It was in the article posted on here about them targeting him now that brohm rejected them.

My point was that Pete Carroll had a decade of coaching experience in college before he ever moved to the NFL, whereas Ken Whisenhunt essentially has zero experience in college.

Going to the All American Bowl that year made us about as happy as if we had gotten a Rose Bowl invite. Things had been pretty bleak for several years.

I think you need to refresh your recollection as to Pete Carroll's career trajectory...

    As coach:
    OP's point is that Carroll:2000::Whiz:2018.

I don't really want Whiz but Carroll is one of the few examples of a mediocre pro coach turning into a great college coach (and then leaving for the pros again, of course).

I can read Wikipedia, too. But hey, if Ken Whisenhunt comes to GT, buys a few players a house or two and does get us that NFL backfield like Pete had, maybe we’ll win a few nattys! Color me excited.

The All-American Bowl bid in 1985 broke the longest non-bowl streak in Tech history -it had been seven long years since the 1978 Peach Bowl. JJ is right, it was a big deal getting a bowl bid to begin with, and then winning to finish 9-2-1 made me ecstatic -particularly coming off of the 20-16 victory over UGA for two-in-a-row. Unlike today, where there are 39 bowl games, there were only 18 in 1985.

After dropping the first home game of the season to UVA 24-13, Tech lost to #8 Auburn 17-14 and tied #16 Tennessee 6-6. But as what typically comes with being a Tech fan, there would be another five year bowl drought, until the 1991 Citrus Bowl victory, which of course brought the 1990 National Championship.

Oui... in short, I am extremely underwhelmed by the prospect of a Ken Whisenhunt hire.

Urban Meyer is available. His coaches hit harder than our defense.
