Scott Frost at Nebraska

Didn't they just fire a bunch of coaches (not Frost)? Maybe making room for better position coaches/coordinators. Could be thinking of another school.

There’s a guy that loves his school and really wants to make this work. He must feel like he’s close. Given some of the games N has played this year and as IIRC hung with some of the big boys, he may be right.

Edit: I just flipped through their schedule to refresh that notion in my head. Hell. What a brutal thing this year has been for them.

Doing a solid for them

I have not looked at this situation, but do you know why Frost did this? Reducing your annual salary by $1 mil would allow the AD to spend those dollars on other priorities, like asst. coaches. But reducing your buyout...? As far as I can see, the only thing that does it make it easier for the AD to fire you, so I don't really understand the logic on that.

I like the move. They are seeing incremental progress and they like him, so they will give him a chance to figure it out. He understands he hasn't gotten the job done, so he agrees to not financially handcuff them if they have to move on. Maybe he will be their Frank Beamer..

The Dabo method. Dabo was fairly low paid (comparatively) so he could get the athletic to pay for staff.

Agree with you. In the times I've watched Frost, who I did not previously like when he crowed about Central Florida being "National Champions", I came to respect him. He has made every attempt to retain the Nebraska model of toughness, physicality and pride. I think Nebraska is in a much tougher spot than in years past, top players have a lot of choices now rather than to go into the middle of the country to corn country. He seems to run a disciplined program and they've lost a bunch of games close.

Possibly hard ball from the school. If you're writing a new contract both sides get to negotiate. Would be kinda weird because you'd need a gun to someone's head to get that much money off the table, you'd think. Maybe they were about to cut his budget no matter what and he volunteered his own salary to fill the gap and they twisted the knife. Maybe he really just loves his school to that tune.

Didn't Oregon State have a coach just step down and leave all his buyout money on the table recently?

From the dead money thread:

Nebraska
$25.8M
Bo Pelini and Mike Riley were fired within a year of extensions. The cost for those mistakes: about $12.8 million.

The only thing I can figure is that the buyout is derived from the annual salaries, and he reduced his salary for this and future years, thereby lowering his buyout, all with the goal of freeing up money for asst hires. Otherwise I can’t see how this makes any sense.

You mean the coach getting paid 13th highest in the ACC should cut his salary even lower? That's stupid. Maybe the GTAA should raise some more money and pay the assistants better.
I think the point he was making is when coaches are not performing, you quit throwing money at them. Collins is obviously off track, and no one is knocking on his door. If he believes in himself, drop some salary and use it for better assistants or to buy himself some time. If he performs then he will be in a better position to renegotiate. The dead money article was pointing out all the waste at programs who have idiots in admin positions who straddle their schools with unneeded debt over coaches who did not deserve a reup, were given huge buyouts on the verge of being fired, etc. Some of those guys like Muschamp were renewed with huge buyouts when their fanny was on fire from the hot seat. Stupid. I don't even want to think about Braine, Hewitt. More money doesn't necessarily equate to success. Clawson was probably making squat in the MAC, as was Urban Meyer before they graduated into the Power 5. A book could be written about how GTAA got to operating in the red and riddled with debt.

Obviously as a Nebraska guy he wants to succeed there. Based on some poor decisions prior they're in financial distress and can't really afford to fire him this year. He's pretty much signed up to win or be done after next season. I personally would not have left $7.5M on the table. The real question is what amount of wins saves his job in 2022?... it's a similar conundrum as us. Sometimes continuity pays dividends, as it takes time to establish a program. Only time will tell at both Nebraska and GT...
