Should it have been called a touchdown?

Should USF's goal line fumble have been called a TD?

I think it ended up called correctly. The refs called it as they saw it live as closely as they could and then reviewed it. It wasn't clearly over the line in the replay, so they live call was kept. However, it seems like by now, we should have the technology to digitally define where the ball is using sensors like with GPS.

But, the worst was the pile up "fumble" against uga with Reggie in 2006. No whistle and the f'n refs are pulling bodies off the pile, and a LB for uga scopes up the ball and returns it. WTF!!!!
Man, don’t get me started -the closest I ever came to getting thrown out of a stadium -GT/UGA @Sanford Stadium -club level, 2006.

After that “fumble” happens, I’m raising hell, again, I’m in club level. This drunk, ignorant, fat-ass dwag fan proceeds to get right up in my face and bark like a ööööing dumbass.

I pushed him away from me, showed him my class ring (UGA grad don’t forget :naughty:, and I wore it from time to time back then) and said something to the effect of, ‘get off of me you fat-ass, see that ring, I bet you don’t have one because your too stupid to have even gotten in here’ - he said something back, and then what I said is what didn’t go over well up in the Club, ‘yeah, well you can just suck my ****.’

By then security is there, escorts me up and out of club -and somehow I was able to save myself from being tossed. I showed the guy my ring and said, ‘I’m an alum man don’t kick me out,’or something to that effect -which given that I was decked out on Tech gear probably confused the guy even more.

So I did stay, but I never sat in club there again. Well, my friend gave up club shortly after that season and his seats are now non-club.

And here's the thing about calls. You could probably go back and look at a game and spot 10 calls/non calls that - had they gone the other way - change the outcome of the game. IIWII

It wasn't a TD. Ball was clearly out and not under control when it allegedly crossed wherever the öööö the GL was at that point. I couldn't tell - only that the ball was out and we got it.

Really, USF is lucky that we didn't run the goddamn thing back 99 yds the other way, instead tripping over their stupid QB at the 1.

I thought he lost control pulling the ball back, not reaching it out. TD for me. Lucky play, frankly Tech deserved one of those, and after handing USF the game last year with special teams and turnovers, good to see this one go the other way.
I think he clearly lost it on the extension, whether it was over the goal line was hard to tell; but I think by the time he was fully extended the ball was at his elbows. I don't think any of our guys knocked it loose either, it looked like he just bumped his own elbow on someone's helmet as he started to extend and lost control of the ball.

This happened in front me too (like the Stephen Hill almost tough catch in another thread) -see, 222 l-u-e is the place to be.

Anyway, he definitely lost control on the extension, and I didn’t think he was in because of that.

I'll never understand why they don't have a permanent camera set up looking directly down the goal line in every stadium. And for that matter, put one on top of the first down marker chains, as well.
They did have those on the first down line at one game this year I saw. I don't know why it isn't implemented everywhere. It wasn't on top of the chains either, they took a pylon like the ones in the front corners of the endzone with cameras in them and moved it every time the chains moved to the new first down spot.

I went back and watched it via YouTube. Not changing my vote, but my gut says he got across the plane in control of the ball. However, the video available on the broadcast was inconclusive, IMO. Call executed correctly given the call on the field as others have said. Like-wise, I think had they called a TD on the field, it would have stood. Which brings me to a question:

Are the field refs intentionally biased at all towards a fumble call in this specific case on a bang-bang play like that?

Refs are like politicians...they do enough to get selected and as little to keep their job. IMO, of course.

Not the same. JT's "fumble" was after forward progress had ended. It was pile and the refs should have blown the play dead. He got in, but I can understand not calling the TD, it was not as clear as day. The fumble (strip) however was complete b.s. The play was stalled and the refs just let it go on for what felt like an eternity. That game was heavily called in uga's favor. Re-watch the fake kick uga did. Their outside blocker was holding our contain guy on the play side, in broad daylight, and a completely open field. The blocker has to release on outside plays like that. No way the kicker gets the first down without a hold there. I think it resulted in a FG from inside the 5. Should have been a 10 yard penalty, and maybe a punt. uga's blocked kicks in the game were straight up illegal, too. Bull rushing the snapper. No calls.

But, the worst was the pile up "fumble" against uga with Reggie in 2006. No whistle and the f'n refs are pulling bodies off the pile, and a LB for uga scopes up the ball and returns it. WTF!!!!
Two of the most infuriating things I've ever seen on a football field. Georgia gets away with a lot of öööö, but those "fumble" returns are impossible for me to chalk up to official incompetence. Completely and utterly indefensible.

Hey you forgot the option who gives a öööö.

Also it wasn’t a TD. His forward progress was stopped and he fumbled trying to reach over. Plus if a guy like cincy says it was a touchdown then obviously you know you’re wrong if you agree with him.
This man has it correct in all respects. </thread>

A few weeks later the exact same thing happened, I believe in a Michigan game. The refs blew it dead, and the announcers were all "of course" about it.

It was not an honest mistake.

I think it was likely a touchdown from the video, but it's impossible to tell definitively. Thus, whatever was called on the field was destined to stand. Thankfully the ref saw fumble.
