His forward progress was stopped and he fumbled trying to reach over.
Hey I don't care either. Thought it's weird you say his forward progress was stopped and it was a fumble. If his forward progress was stopped then the play is dead and it wasn't a fumble.

As a player you've got to know if you extend the ball like that, even if you make it past the goal line you could lose the ball and get screwed on the ref's call. Video review won't save you if it's close or hard to see. So a well coached player isn't going to jump over the pile and riskily extend on 3rd down.
