Slow Progress

I think Sims has a lot of potential.

I don't think we have a coaching staff that can develop that potential.

I definitely see the potential. But it seems like hes hit a plateau under the current staff, and if he doesn't improve I'm not sure it makes sense to keep playing him. Is the risk worth the reward when he's not improving?

Sims will have exhausted his eligibility before he approaches anything resembling a good qb. His coaches belong at Temple.
I'm guessing you have seen GT QB's since Godsey completing 62% of their passes on the season?

Risk playing him? He is by far our best QB.

Completion % up 5 pts, QBR up a good bit, TD/INT ratio has gone from 1-1 to almost 2-1. Maybe he isn't where you want yet, but to say he is not improving is a fallacy.

In a results oriented industry, Brent Key has shown nothing. Pay the buyout and move on.

Nah, I think you roll with him. Either he is a good coach or has the entire profession fooled. The line HAS improved... it's just improved from historically horrendous to simply really bad. Needs more time

I agree that Sims is alright. But the coaches obviously don’t trust him. I’ve never seen a staff not let a QB throw over the middle like they have done to Sims. His body language tells me he is defeated with them only letting him throw out routes and dump passes. My opinion is they had the right plan last year with Sims which was to throw him to the wolves and let him take his lumps. This year they should have kept that plan. Instead they are now trying to manipulate the situation which is destroying his play making ability and confidence. A dual threat QB without confidence is a bench warmer. Hence, 3 and out after 3 and out. I hope they let Sims run the full playbook the rest of this season.

I guess you are just way more observant then me. I see none of the defeated body language you are seeing.

Being an assistant coach at Bama can (and I think has) done that.
I might of had more faith in it until seeing our backup center snap the ball. That sort of thing is 100% in Key's purview and would seem like the first thing you work on for a potential center player (unless he's our 4th or lower option at the position maybe).

Typically he is our best QB, primarily because he has the ability to break off a long run. Saturday he was struggling, the offense was struggling, early in the 4th I think it was time to give one of the other ATL QB's a series or 2 to see if the offense could find a spark. If not Yates then the other guy, cause Sims wasn't working. After the Gibbs TD we had drives of 12 yards, 0 yards, 5yards, 5 yards, and -4 yards to close out the game. It wasn't all Sims; but we needed to change something.

I disagree with this. Sim's strengths to me are short to medium passing and running. He is strong enough to throw long occasionally; but the accuracy isn't there, plus with the OL those plays don't have time to develop. With Gibbs and Mason we should be very productive using both of them like Roger Craigs. Get Gibbs and Mason the ball in space or just past the line of scrimmage and let them do their thing. If Gibbs and Mason are covered give SIms the option to tuck it and run.

You really need to give this bullshit a rest. Everyone knows this wasn’t a passing offense under CPJ. But since you keep spouting it, Taquon was 100% his freshman year, and even Scott Blair (a kicker) and Tevin finished a season at 100%.

The stats have improved, but it seems like he's pulled way back on the deep throw attempts and across the middle, and instead focused more on passes to rbs. Maybe I'm being unfair in my eyeball test, but it seemed like the improvement was driven by taking lower risk passes.

Edit:

Let me ask, what's your frame of reference for improvement? This year? Last couple years?

This sums up my take on Sims:

This was not the turnover fest that happened in the Carrier Dome last year, but it ranks up there with the worst performances of Jeff Sims’s career. His average pass attempt travelled less than 5 yards past the line of scrimmage, and he completed 9% fewer passes than expected. On the deeper throws he did try, thing were much, much worse: -26% CPOE on 10+ yard throws and -35% CPOE on 20+ yard throws. On drop backs where he didn’t face pressure, Sims posted an EPA of -0.26/play. That’s roughly three standard deviations below average.

The lack of zip when trying to get throws to the sideline was baffling. The number of short hops was demoralizing. And the complete inability to threaten downfield allowed Miami to do whatever they wanted against GT’s rushing attack in the second half.

This was the fourth consecutive game that Jeff Sims posted a negative CPOE; the trajectory is once again quite discouraging at the most important position on the team.

ESPN FPI Ranks for GT last 3 seasons.

2019: 110
2020: 90
2021: 62

I am unhappy with the results so far this year, but we have played close in more games this year than we did last year.

3-6 (or the likely 3-9) is definitely not acceptable, so we will have to continue the improvement into 2022.

I don't think anything less than 6-6 and top 50 ranking is acceptable for 2022.
Update:

2019: 110
2020: 90
2021: 77

Our FPI rank crashed after losing to BC by 11 and looking like a FCS team against ND. With another similar showing against uga, it might sink down to 80s which is basically where we were at last season.

I'm not hopeful for 2022 any more.

Our roster was garbage in 2018 and 2019. There was no Justin Thomas in the wings to out on a Superman cape and win a ballgame for us.
And we won more games in 2018 than we won in 2019 and 2020 combined. Not too far off from 3 years of this abortion.

Hopefully you are right and we get an improved OL. Collins does not replace starters regardless of their performance.
Starters have been replaced several times this season. Unfortunately, we really don't have a full two deep of P5 level OL. We have a lot of work to do on both lines.
