So it begins... The decline of college football

Here is my question. What is to stop coaches and boosters that own businesses from paying kids to play for a school? Maybe I am wrong, but if someone gets paid, to play a sport, should they NOT lose their amateur status? I know that GT will NEVER have the booster backing like a UGA, Bama, Auburn, Notre Dame and such... Is it just me, or are we seeing the end of college football, as we know it?

Where you been for like a year?

What we have now in FBS is 'age group professional football'. Teams just happen to be sponsored by Universities. Next, I'd expect firms to sponsor teams - here come the Tesla Thunderbolts, Microsoft Bitslingers, and so forth. Of course Amazon will be the big corporate sponsor of a slew of women's teams...

So Alabama’s QB already had over $1M in NIL deals prior to last season? That’s messed up, that a college football player is pulling down more money than most of the people watching him play. Nuts.

I think this is going to have a lot of unforseen consequences.

If you were playing on the offensive line for this guy and you weren't getting paid ten percent as much as him, how would this affect you?

What happens when the halfback having a great season gets his feelings hurt because the quarterback having a bad season is getting paid more than he is?

How will it affect the team, when a player is making more than an assistant coach?

What kind of special treatment will the "boosters" paying these "kids" all this money want?

Football is a good game. It is getting ready to be destroyed by something even more powerful: Greed.

I have quit watching most pro sports because I'm equally sick of the owners and players, a bunch of people being grossly overpaid by another bunch of people who are egomaniacs. Well, I feel the same way about college sports in which "students" have been replaced by mercenaries jumping from team to team for a bigger salary. Who gives a Damn about them? They're worse than "pro" owners and athletes, because the college people are so much more hypocritical about what they're doing. Well, I don't need to contribute to a college where a 18 year old is getting paid more than I am to play 12 games a year.

TAMU anyone? Jimbo bought himself a historic class with his insane boosters who are willing to pay anything for a national title. It's literally the only thing these folks care about.

So here is the plus side of the NIL. Under the old system, guys majored in football at most D1 schools. Even at Tech, you didn’t see a lot of CS majors on the roster. It was significantly worse at schools like UNC with players graduating with completely worthless degrees.

Then what happened? Most players didn’t make the NFL and some who did didn’t get guaranteed money. So the players were left with worthless degrees and that was it. What good was it for a guy to play for OSU, because he was the best Tackle in Ohio, only to blow out his knee and get handed a degree that puts him back in the same no prospect life he came from? Let that guy take his worthless sports history degree and $200k for his troubles.

And all those boosters who want to throw away $50k/yr only to have all their players wash out, f’em. Let them waste their money however they want.

If this kills college football, so be it. I can watch an ivy league version or just watch the nfl. I don’t give a crap about minor league baseball and I won’t give a crap about minor league football, even if it is sponsored by my local community college.

No way GT can or ever will compete w that $$$ unless Elon chooses to quit SpaceX and Tesla only to become a A.D in Atlanta, which isn't happening.

College football is just about dead to me. I never thought it would happen, but here we are. It’s a professional sport played by a bunch of mercenaries whose loyalty goes to the highest bidder. An inferior version of the NFL.

Yeah, I'm with you. It's lost something. I was supportive of players getting to make money from their fame, like social media or youtube for example, but this is not what anyone envisioned where you can buy your recruits outright as well as cherry pick other teams best players w/o penalty. We should've known this would happen but even the biggest players like Saban say it's out of control. He's probably more pissed that even Bama can't outbid Texas oil money than for the loss of purity, but regardless, Saban seems to care about the health of the sport and it is certainly on a dangerous precipice now. Jimbo Fisher has always been complete trash behind the scenes and shamelessly now rents his players while saying "you guys are trying to tarnish how hard we worked to get this class, blah blah." Yes Jimbo, it is hard work to drum up those kinds of funds. I get it.

I like the part of that book Junction Boys where they mention how A&M got put on probation back then...for buying a good recruiting class.

So many things that I love, including college football, seem to be exponentially getting worse. I agree the portal & NIL wasn’t the start of destroying any sense of parity, but it has sped the process up significantly.
