So it begins... The decline of college football

It will be difficult to pull off a division of the NCAA because its own inability to give leadership in the 21st century has caused Congressional/judicial/state legislative action to open Pandora’s box. If you opt for the less aggressive division in college athletics, you still can’t stop NIL for your players. That is now the recognized legal right of a college athlete to be compensated for their name, image and likeness whether at Notre Dame or Slippery Rock.

College Presidents who want to regain control should blow up the NCAA and consider blowing up existing conferences. New associations should make geographic sense and should group schools with similar affinities, particularly to compete at an agreed upon level. New media contracts can be formed, although revenue will likely decline for all of the schools except those competing at the highest level.

The new national organization’s main role would be to design championship formats for sports and maximize the dollars from those championships.

There should be no national organization at all. Let the AD’s and schools decide if they want to play each other. No more NCAA or any other version by a different name. Then, like we already have, have a bunch of rich dudes with stadiums create a playoff system and criteria to get into that playoff. If a school chooses to play 10 patsies to go 10-0 but don’t meet the rich guys criteria for his playoff then they don’t get invited. It’s basically what we already have when you get down to it. The NCAA doesn’t control the bowl system or playoff system now so there is no need for a national organization anymore in a world where we pay players and take fake classes. Set the criteria for a playoff system and let the schools make schedules to meet those criteria.

College football has already been declining nationwide except for the Southeast and parts of the Midwest. Pro football has been increasing in popularity. When I was a kid boxing was big and now it’s almost nonexistent. Major League Baseball has declined some and pro basketball has increased. Preferences change over the years due to culture and other factors.

All true. This is what happens when you pull the sport away from the alums. When the NCAA allowed kids to start attending schools who had no academic merit to attend those schools eventually it’s no longer “my team” but a bunch of mercenaries. The NCAA took the student out of student athlete. Couple that with so many more viewing/attendance options and this was inevitable. For me, it’s been this way a long time. I root for the jersey and could honestly care less about the players because I know they could care less about me or my school. The portal shows us all quite clearly that these folks could care less about “their” school. They are just using the system to showcase their skills (as they should under the system the NCAA has built). I don’t fault the players at all. I fault the system the NCAA has built.

I feel like this fits in here even though it’s a different sport:

"The deal was funded by billionaire John Ruiz, Ruiz has 111 deals signed or pending with Hurricanes athletes to promote his companies, LifeWallet and Cigarette Racing, according to a report in the Miami Herald on Wednesday."

Do we have any billionaire boosters willing to do this?
