I'm sick of hearing how Gailey was such a "great recruiter". To hear some tell it, he was constantly signing top 30 classes and loading the cupboard. The truth is, outside of one outlier year where a bunch of the top 20 Georgia players wanted to come to Tech, the bulk of our talent was a result of (1) good position coaches on the defensive side (Tenuta, Giff, BJM, Charles Kelley) and (2) an EXCELLENT strength coach in Eric Ciano. You'll notice that Ciano still has a job in the NFL and has survived several coaches being fired as a testament to how much people think of him.
Now Gailey gets credit for hiring Ciano (if he did, I'm not sure) but that doesn't mean he was this great recruiter. Prior to 2007 the recruiting coordinator was special teams coach David Wilson. Anyone who was around the program at the time could tell you what a joke he was. Gailey promoted Giff to RC for the 2007 class, and brought Geoff Collins on board to run the show on campus, and like I said before there was a unique situation with several 4-star athletes interested in GT. That is the sort of stuff that results in our great 2007 recruiting class.
